Book excerpt: A closed-loop circulation test was conducted from 10 May to 14 July 1995 on the Hot Dry Rock (HDR) reservoir at Fenton Hill, New Mexico after a hiatus of nearly two years. Changes in heat transfer and reservoir volume were investigated and compared to previous circulation tests. Chemical tracers can be used to measure the volume of flow paths in hydrologic systems. Usually, tracers are used in low temperature situations, but the application to high temperature systems has been established for certain tracer compounds. During the 1995 flow testing at Fenton Hill, both a conservative and a non conservative tracer were injected into the reservoir in each of two separate experiments. The purpose was to determine the volume of the most direct flow paths and to estimate the total volume of fractures in the system. The results indicate a relatively static reservoir volume between June and July, yet with an increase in flow dispersion. It can be assumed that channeling of flow did not occur in the main body of the reservoir due to continuous operation. However, a new flow path adjacent to the injection well did develop, and its affect on reservoir flow was investigated using tracer technology. The tracer data collected during that period shows that there is a minor contribution of flow from a previously under-developed region of the HDR reservoir.

Book excerpt: With completion of the repairs of EE-2 wellbore in FY88, the major effort in FY89 will be directed toward the remaining preparations for the Long-Term Flow Test (LTFT) now scheduled to begin in September 1990. Procurement of components and equipment and installation of the surface system will continue through this and the next fiscal year to be ready for the LTFT in September 1990. Reservoir experiments will consist of pressurization and flow tests to establish further characteristics of the Phase II reservoir, particularly operating water losses. Laboratory studies will continue work on fracture healing and complete adsorption tests for chemically-reactive tracer work. Cleaning and relining of the EE-I pond to meet New Mexico State requirements, started in FY88, will be completed. Reanalysis of seismic data and automation of seismic data techniques will continue. Monitoring for environmental information, routine operations, security, health and safety training, and reporting activities will continue. The program's objectives are: (1) To develop HDR drilling, hardware and instrumentation technology for energy extraction and conduct a successful energy extraction field experiment of the Phase II reservoir. (2) To verify that the environmental consequences of HDR development are acceptable. (3) To improve HDR technology to the point where electricity could be produced commercially from a substantial number of known hot dry rock resource sites in a cost range of 5 to 8 cents/kWh. (4) To evaluate the performance of the Fenton Hill Phase II reservoir by 1992. That performance consists of system operating characteristics, including thermal drawdown, energy output, reservoir impedance, and water consumption.

Book excerpt: The Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Energy Project began in the early 1970's with the objective of developing a technology to make economically available the large ubiquitous thermal energy of the upper earth crust. The program, operated by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been funded by the Department of Energy (and its predecessors) and for a few years with participation by West Germany and Japan. An energy reservoir was accessed by drilling and hydraulically fracturing in the Precambrian basement rock at Fenton Hill, outside the Valles Caldera of north-central New Mexico. Water was circulated through the reservoir (Phase 1, 1978--1980) producing up to 5 MWt at 132°C. A second (Phase 2) reservoir has been established with a deeper pair of holes and an initial flow test completed producing about 10 MWt at 190°C. These accomplishments have been supported and paralleled by developments in drilling, well completion and instrumentation hardware. Acoustic or microseismic fracture mapping and geochemistry studies in addition to hydraulic and thermal data contribute to reservoir analyses. Studies of some of the estimated 430,000 quads of HDR resources in the United States have been made with special attention focused on sites most advantageous for early development. 17 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Two hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal energy reservoirs were created by hydraulic fracturing of granite at 2.7 t o 3.0 km (5000 to 10000 ft) at the Fenton Hill site, near the Valles Caldera in northern New Mexico. Both reservoirs are research reservoirs, in the sense that both are fairly small, generally yielding 5 MWt or less, and are intended to serve as the basic building blocks of commercial-sized reservoirs, consisting of 10 t o 15 similar fractures that would yield approximately 35 MWt over a 10 to 20 yr period. Both research reservoirs were created in the same well-pair, with energy extraction well number 1 (EE-1) serving as the injection well, and geothermal test well number 2 (GT-2) serving as the extraction, or production, well. Evaluation of the second reservoir was accomplished in two steps: (1) with a 23-day heat extraction experiment that began October 23, 1979, the results of which are described by Murphy (1980), and (2) a-second, longer-term heat extraction experiment still in progress, which as of November 25, 1980 has been in effect for 260 days. The results of this current experiment are compared with earlier experiments.

Book excerpt: Mining the Earth's Heat: Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Energy describes the work carried out by the Los Alamos National Laboratory to turn an idealistic concept - that of drawing useful amounts of energy from the vast underground store of hot rock at reachable depths - into a practical reality. This book provides comprehensive documentation of the over two decades of experiments carried out at the test site at Fenton Hill, New Mexico, where the feasibility of accessing and extracting this vast natural resource was finally demonstrated. It also discusses the numerous technical, administrative, and financial hurdles that had to be overcome along the way. This publication will no doubt prove invaluable to researchers around the world as they strive to move this now-proven technology toward commercial viability. In addition, it is a valuable source of relevant information for anyone interested in the world energy outlook for the 21st century and beyond.

Book excerpt: The stress field at the source of microearthquakes in the interior of the hot dry rock geothermal reservoir at Fenton Hill appears to be different to the far field stress outside the reservoir. The stress field seems to be re-oriented prior to failure, during the course of processes that inflate the reservoir. The state of stress, both inside and outside, the hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal reservoir at Fenton Hill, is important in predicting the course of stress-dependent processes, and in transferring HDR technology developed at Fenton Hill, to sites, such as at Clearlake in California, where the stress field is expected to be substantially different. The state of stress at Fenton Hill is not well known because of limitations in stress measuring technology. It is necessary to use a variety of indirect methods and seek an estimate of the stress. 5 refs.

Book excerpt: A recent 6-day flow experiment conducted at the Los Alamos National Laboratory's Fenton Hill Hot Dry Rock (HDR) test site in north-central New Mexico has verified that an HDR reservoir has the capability for a significant, and very rapid, increase in power output upon demand. The objective of this cyclic load-following experiment was to investigate the performance of the reservoir in a nominal high-backpressure (2200 psi) baseload operating condition upon which was superimposed greatly increased power production for a 4-hour period each day. In practice, this enhanced production was accomplished by dropping the production well backpressure from the preexisting level of 2200 psi down to about 500 psi to rapidly drain the fluid stored in the pressure-dilated joints surrounding the production well. During the last cycle of this six-cycle test, the mean production conditions were 146.6 gpm for 4 hours at a temperature of 189°C followed by 92.4 gpm for 20 hours at a temperature of 183°C. These flow and temperature values indicate a flow enhancement of 59%, and a power enhancement of 65% during the high-production period. The time required to increase the reservoir power output from the baseload to the peaking rate was about 2 minutes.

Book excerpt: Field testing of a hydraulically-stimulated, hot dry rock geothermal system at the Fenton Hill site in northern New Mexico has indicated that significant reservoir growth occurred as energy was extracted. Tracer, microseismic, and geochemical measurements provided the primary quantitative evidence for documenting the increases in accessible reservoir volume and fractured rock surface area that were observed during energy extraction operations which caused substantial thermal drawdown in portions of the reservoir. These temporal increases suggest that augmentation of reservoir heat production capacity in hot dry rock systems may be possible.

Book excerpt: A conceptual model is developed for fluid flow in the Fenton Hill, New Mexico Hot Dry Rock (HDR) geothermal reservoir. The model consists of discrete fractures whose apertures, and hence permeabilities, are strong functions of pressure. Fluid storage occurs within the main fracture system and in the surrounding country rock. Using a fracture network simulator, the reservoir model has been calibrated using reservoir test data obtained at a variety of pressures and flow rates with the system undergoing either circulation or injection with no production. Model results indicate that operating the reservoir with the production well at a higher pressure than is usually used could improve the performance by reducing the pressure difference between the injection and production wells required for circulation. An experiment is designed using numerical simulations to address the following issues: (1) the operating conditions we should employ for the test, (2) the test duration, and (3) the possibility of inducing unwanted reservoir extension. This test is scheduled to be carried out in the late summer of this year. 13 refs., 9 figs.

Book excerpt: The potential of energy extracted from hot dry rock (HDR) was investigated as a commercailly feasible alternate energy source. Run Segments 3 and 4 were completed in the prototype reservoir of the Phase I energy-extraction system at Fenton Hill, New Mexico. Results of these tests yielded significant data on the existing system and this information will be applicable to future HDR systems. Plans and operations initiating a Phase II system are underway at the Fenton Hill site. This system, a deeper, hotter commercial-size reservoir, is intended to demonstrate the longevity and economics of an HDR system. Major activity occurred in evaluation of the national resource potential and in characterizing possible future HDR geothermal sites. Work has begun in the institutional and industrial support area to assess the economics and promote commercial interest in HDR systems as an alternate energy source.
