Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches Into the Phenomena of Modern Spiritualism Of all the eminent scientists who have pains takingly investigated the mysterious phenomena of Modem Spiritualism - and there are many - Sir William Crookes must be easily recognized as leader. His eminence as a discoverer and an inventor and his vast services to the world as a chemist have given to his "Researches into the Phenomena of Modem Spiritualism" a value and potency that could not attach to labors of men equally honest and painstaking, but devoid of his scientific attainments and great reputation. Beginning his investigations of Spiritual Phenomena over a third of a century ago, when the prejudice against psychic research was much stronger than today, and pursuing his researches with all the care, caution, and accuracy that marked his other scientific work; he rendered his studies in this new field doubly valuable to the world by his conscientious record of all the details and conditions and his noble boldness in publishing the same to the world. The record of his experiments with Daniel Douglas Home and Miss Florence Cook as psychics, all conducted under test conditions, must ever stand among the most marvelous of human experiences and an impregnable defence of the spirituality of man's nature and of his ability to survive the shock of death. The articles, here quoted, first appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Science, of which Sir William was the able editor; and they have been supplemented by extracts from the speech of the eminent scientist delivered from the chair of the British Association, at its Bristol meeting, in 1898, in which speech he declared over again his convictions concerning the value of the results of scientific investigation into what has been known as the realm of the occult. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Tendency of Modern Spiritualism While the library of Spiritualist publications, already large, is fast increasing, it is by no means surprising that books should be written against Spiritualism. Several have been presented to the public; some professing to expose it as a humbug - an illusion; others endeavoring to explain it on natural principles, as originating in magnetism, od force, Ac. These works, in the main, give evidence of learning, and a knowledge of science and philosophy. Had we any idea that this is the proper method of meeting the issue, we should not think it necessary to add to the list. But we have thought from the beginning of the work of Spiritualism, that it was Satanic in its nature and origin, and immoral in its tendency; and that the word of God presented the only antidote to its seductions. This work lays no claim to literary merit, or to philosophic or scientific research. Our course has not been in that direction. Our aim has not been to gratify a taste for such reading, but rather to make our pages useful. Nor have we aimed to please any particular class, but rather to fulfill the requirement to speak the truth in faithfulness, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear. We have written especially for the benefit of those who fear God, and tremble at his word. While we believe that in these pages is contained the only true solution of these mysterious phenomena, we would remind the readers that an intellectual conviction, or mere belief of the truth, will not shield them from the power of these deceptions. Nothing short of humble obedience to the truth, walking in the Spirit of God, will shield from the spirit of error. "If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." Though he may be convinced of the truth, yet if the spirit of error reigns in his heart, the coming conflict will surely find him arrayed "against the Lamb and his army." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Spiritualism: Its Phenomena and Philosophy The angels of the Bible are ministering spirits, who, from their very nature and constitution, are best adapted to the work of guardianship and ministration, and the work is best adapted to their growth and development. Such guardianship is una Vailing unless the spirits can communicate with those they pro tect. T liat they can do so, he proves by the Bible, the ancients, and the fathers and leaders of the Church. Having thus fortified himself with authority, he brings forward the heavy artillery of modern phenomena, held in reserve. He would not indorse the manifestations given at public Circles, regard ing the rappings as a humbug, until forced on his attention by rappings and spirit writing in his own family. He felt the presence of spirits and conversed with them, yet he remained ln doubt of the reality of Spiritualism. His educational preju dices stood in his way, and an article he published at that time gives a doubtful sound. He believes ln sp1r1t communion, but discards the manifestations. In 1853 he continued his investigation of Spiritualism. Be lieving it to be the prince of humbugs, he endeavored to detect and expose it. Through the mediumship of a colored servant-girl in his family, he was first convinced that the phe nomena could not be explained by any law of physics or meta physics with which he was acquainted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Spiritualism In this, his posthumous work, Myers does not indeed disdain whatever support may be derived from the trance utterances and the physical phenomena. But in both directions the evidence has been SO multi plied since his death that it will be necessary to devote the bulk of this book to its discussion. Myers' peculiar contribution to the subject may be considered more brie y, not, indeed, as being less important, but because the nine years which have elapsed have brought nothing to strengthen his position. Brie y, Myers essayed to lift the whole problem of man's immortality to a higher level, and propounded an argument of far wider scope, whose cogency we are hardly yet in a position accurately to estimate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism: Its History, Phenomena and Doctrine This book has been written in response to a suggestion that I should prepare a volume giving a comprehensive answer to the question: "What is Spiritualism?" A large literature of the subject exists, the library of the London Spiritualist Alliance containing about 3,000 volumes; but the aspects are many, the ramifications extensive, and there is no single work that presents a review of the whole, except Mr. Podmore's "Modern Spiritualism" (2 vols., 1902), which, besides being too bulky for any but a determined student, is now regarded by most investigators as being too negative. The progress of psychical research in the last sixteen years has raised into new credibility many narratives which, in those earlier days, a cautious mind could not even provisionally accept. Here it is necessary or desirable that I should indicate my own position, in order that the reader may know how to discount my opinions. In debatable matters, we naturally want to know exactly where a writer stands, before we can decide how far to rely on what he says; for, though he may be perfectly honest, he may involuntarily be very unfair if he happens to have strong preferences. Book excerpt: In "A Defence of Modern Spiritualism," Alfred Russel Wallace, the outstanding biologist and co-founder of the idea of evolution, departs from his scientific foundations to address the increasing spiritualist motion of the 19th century. Wallace, mentioned for his highbrow interest and open-mindedness, makes a sturdy case in desire of spiritualism, a religion machine primarily based on connection with spirits. Wallace's book makes use of his private stories, studies, and testimonials to argue for the truth of spiritualist practices. Wallace, who's normally linked with clinical rigor, uses his analytical thoughts to investigate and guard spiritual reviews, difficult skeptics and striving to reconcile spiritualist ideas with contemporary scientific and theological perspectives. "A Defence of Modern Spiritualism" exemplifies Wallace's diversity as a thinker, demonstrating his willingness to have a look at unusual areas of information. While it may appear to be a departure from Wallace's evolutionary pursuits, the book shows his willpower to intellectual studies and his desire to recognize the various elements of the human revel in.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism and the New Psychology, an Explanation of Spiritualist Phenomena and Beliefs in Terms of Modern Knowledge My object in writing this book is to present an explanation of so-called occult phenomena concerning which credulity is still as busy as in the days of witchcraft. The producers of these phenomena have been exposed efficiently and often, but their supporters are as active as ever, and show a simple faith which is more convincing than any argument. Moreover, the producers themselves - mediums, clairvoyants, water-diviners, seers, or whatever they may be - are sometimes of such apparent honesty and simplicity that disbelief seems almost a sacrilege; therefore part of my aim is to show how a man believing firmly in his own honesty may yet practice elaborate trickery and deceit. As the book is intended for readers presumably unacquainted with the trend of modern psychology, it is necessary to point out how much of the opinions set forth are accepted by workers at the subject. The theory of dissociation has, as far as I know, no opponents. It was applied by Pierre Janet to hysteria and water-divining, thought-reading, etc., all of which he regarded as psychologically identical.
