Book excerpt: The NASA Lewis Research Center and the U.S. Army Aviation Systems Command share an interest in advancing the technology for helicopter propulsion systems. In particular, this paper presents highlights from that portion of the program in drive train technology and the related mechanical components. The major goals of the program are to increase life, reliability, and maintainability; reduce the weight, noise, and vibration; and maintain the relatively high mechanical efficiency of the gear train. The current activity emphasizes noise reduction technology and analytical code development followed by experimental verification. Selected significant advances in technology for transmissions are reviewed, including advanced configurations and new analytical tools. Finally, the plan for transmission research in the future is presented.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common oil is now used in both engines and transmissions of virtually all U.S. military helicopters. While this provides significant logistic advantages, these advantages are attained only by compromising the optimization of the oil for either system. This paper summarizes the results of two studies undertaken to determine what benefits would accrue through the development of a special oil tailored specifically to meet the unique requirements of high-speed, heavily loaded helicopter transmission systems. These studies, conducted independently by two major helicopter manufacturers under the direction of the Naval Air Propulsion Center, addressed specific problem areas as related to typical production aircraft in order to reach well-documented conclusions. In addition, the effect of the availability of such a special gearbox lubricant on the development of other advanced technology components was evaluated and documented.

Book excerpt: Experimental tests were performed on the NASA/Bell Helicopter Textron (BHT) 500 hp advanced technology transmission (ATT) at the NASA Lewis Research Center. The ATT was a retrofit of the OH-58C helicopter 236 kW (317 hp) main rotor transmission, upgraded to 373 kW (500 hp), with a design goal of retaining long life with a minimum increase in cost, weight, and size. Vibration, strain, efficiency, deflection, and temperature experiments were performed and the results were compared to previous experiments on the OH-58A, OH-58C, and UH-60A transmissions. The high-contact-ratio gears and the cantilevered-mounted, flexible ring gear of the ATT reduced vibration compared to that of the OH-58C. The ATT flexible ring gear improved planetary load sharing compared to that of the rigid ring gear of the UH-60A transmission. The ATT mechanical efficiency was lower than that of the OH-58A transmission, probably due to the high-contact-ratio planetary gears. Lewicki, David G. and Townsend, Dennis P. This book was released on 1985 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major share of power transmission research and development during the past twenty years has been expended on the improvement of helicopter main rotor drives. Fortunately, most of the advanced technology features resulting from these efforts are directly applicable to turboprop transmissions. The technology base is made up of a number of interacting disciplines whose application is tempered by economics as well as the engineering state of the art at any given time.

Book Synopsis A New Helicopter Transmission Model for Condition-based Maintenance Technologies Using First Principles by : David Blake Stringer
Download or read book A New Helicopter Transmission Model for Condition-based Maintenance Technologies Using First Principles written by David Blake Stringer and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a new helicopter transmission model in support of condition-based maintenance (CBM) initiatives. The model uses the first principles approach to analyze the rotating shafts and gear couplings using rotor dynamic analysis techniques. The helicopter transmission is presented, followed by a discussion of the finite element formulation to include gear mesh modeling methodologies. System natural frequencies and mode shapes are discussed, along with the model's validation procedure. The model's primary purpose is to simulate multiple operating conditions to include faults. One such fault condition simulates the wear of gear tooth contact surfaces. The nature of the fault and its modeling techniques are discussed. Simulation results are presented in the time domain using a conventional vibration diagnostic parameter. A new diagnostic parameter, the FE2, is also introduced for detecting faults in the frequency domain. Additional considerations and further research points are also discussed. The results demonstrate the potential of physics-based, mathematical models in providing a key technology enabler for improving health monitoring and prediction capabilities of CBM strategies.
