Book excerpt: The spring of 2020 marked a change in how almost everyone conducted their personal and professional lives, both within science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) and beyond. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global scientific conferences and individual laboratories and required people to find space in their homes from which to work. It blurred the boundaries between work and non-work, infusing ambiguity into everyday activities. While adaptations that allowed people to connect became more common, the evidence available at the end of 2020 suggests that the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic endangered the engagement, experience, and retention of women in academic STEMM, and may roll back some of the achievement gains made by women in the academy to date. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM identifies, names, and documents how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the careers of women in academic STEMM during the initial 9-month period since March 2020 and considers how these disruptions - both positive and negative - might shape future progress for women. This publication builds on the 2020 report Promising Practices for Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nuanced ways these disruptions have manifested. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM will inform the academic community as it emerges from the pandemic to mitigate any long-term negative consequences for the continued advancement of women in the academic STEMM workforce and build on the adaptations and opportunities that have emerged.

Book excerpt: In order to understand the importance of social sciences, first of all, it is necessary to examine what the social sciences really are and what their purpose is. Social science is essentially the study of society: it provides insight into the social environment and nature, and studies how individuals behave, communicate and relate to one another. It also analyzes how individuals' behaviors and social interactions affect the socioeconomic, political and cultural climate of the world. Under the umbrella of social sciences; there are academic disciplines that are considered social sciences such as history, geography, sociology, psychology, anthropology, archeology, political science, economics, business and management, and law. All these disciplines help individuals better understand the social, economic and political institutions that affect their lifestyles and general well-being, and teach them how to engage with these institutions and participate in society. In other words, in order to be a part of society, one must first understand how society works, and social sciences make this possible. The book “International Research in Social, Human and Administrative Sciences IV” is a collection of research articles on a wide range of social science issues written by researchers from several different universities and institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the readers with a set of vivid studies of the variety of national approaches that were taken to responding to COVID-19 in the first few months of the pandemic. At its core is a series of reports addressing the national responses to COVID-19 in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa. Country reports present the actions, events and circumstances of governmental response and make an early attempt at producing insights and at distilling lessons. Eyewitness reports from civil servants and public managers contain practical points of view on the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. In different chapters, editors and contributors provide an analytical framework for the description and explanation of government measures and their consequences in a rich variety and diversity of national settings. They also situate the governmental responses to the pandemic in the context of the global governance agenda, stress the important relationship between governmental authorities and citizens, and emphasize the role of ideological factors in the government response to COVID-19. A bold attempt is made in the concluding chapter to model government strategies for managing the emergency of the pandemic and the consequences for trajectories of infection and mortality. As the editors argue, the principles of "good governance" are of relevance to countries everywhere. There was evidence of them in action on the COVID-19 pandemic all over the world, in a wide range of institutional settings. COVID-19 experiences have a lot to teach us about the governance capabilities that will be needed when future emergency situations occur, emergencies that might be created by pandemics or climate change, or various other global risks. Governments will need to be agile, able to learn in real time, good at evaluating evidence in fast changing and complex situations, and good at facilitating coordination across the whole-of-government and in partnership with citizens and the private sector.Paul Joyce is an Associate at the Institute of Local Government Studies, University of Birmingham, Visiting Professor at Leeds University, and Director of Publications at IIASFabienne Maron is Guest Lecturer at Université de Reims Champagne Ardenne (URCA) and Scientific Director at IIAS.Purshottama Sivanarain Reddy is Senior Professor at University of KwaZulu-Natal, Vice-President for Programmes of IASIA and Chairperson of the Scientific Committee (PRAC) of IIAS.The International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS) is a learned society in public administration established in 1930 and headquartered in Brussels. The Public Governance Series aims at diffusing the scientific knowledge it produces.

This book is the result of a long and intensive editorial process that we have experienced together, and I am thrilled to share it with you. This book has come to life with the efforts of many people, and as an editor, I take great pride in being a part of this process. This book aims to offer a broad perspective on social, humanitarian, and administrative issues. Social and humanitarian issues are concerned with the study of human behavior and social relations. On the other hand, administrative issues provide information about management and how the organization works. Nowadays, businesses, governments, and societies place more emphasis on social and humanitarian issues. While businesses strive to treat their employees more fairly, protect the environment, and fulfill their social responsibilities, governments implement social policies to increase the welfare of their citizens and work to make administrative processes more effective. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the author and all the contributors who have provided immense support throughout this process. Their dedicated efforts and support have played a vital role in bringing this book to fruition.
