Participants were four urban school band directors and two urban school administrators. The directors were purposely selected based upon having successful and well-known band programs in schools that exhibited characteristics common to urban schools, including (a) a large percentage of low-SES students, (b) low, mean standardized test scores for students, (c) limited parental involvement in the band program, and (d) constrained budgets to support the band program. A survey and interviews were used to collect data on the teachers, their programs, and their administrators. Interview questions were developed based upon a review of literature and research questions regarding strategies used to recruit and retain students within urban school band programs. Using a semi-structured format, directors were interviewed to learn about their background in music, education, and current teaching situation. Two administrators were also interviewed regarding their perceptions of the recruitment and retention of students in the band programs in their school. Each band director participant described similar approaches to recruitment and retention, utilizing techniques such as demonstration concerts, informational handouts, testing of students on instruments, and holding a recruitment night for parents. They also noted the importance of administrative and parental support.

Small college band programs are identified as institutions under a 5,000-student enrollment and often develop recruiting strategies that employ a smaller applicant pool. This qualitative study observes small college recruitment practices and justifies successful and non-successful techniques within small college band programs. The research within this project examined insights into college admissions practices, administration roles in student recruitment and retention, and the role of the music faculty in recruiting and retaining current students. Furthermore, this study evaluates the effects of college exposure, marketing, communication, and incentives on student decision-making. This document also evaluates and defines the importance of the professional relationships between the college program director and surrounding high school programs. In addition, this research assesses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and how it changed how small college band programs recruit and retain students. Discoveries of this study include enrollment data from multiple small school band programs in central Texas. The data collected emphasizes retention rates as well. This research also weighs the effects of geographic location on student enrollment. This qualitative study has reviewed multiple marketing and social media avenues directly related to student enrollment. While this research suggests that certain recruitment practices have a higher success rate, specialized recruitment strategies based on geographical location, economic support, and equipment availability generate differing success rates per location. Thus, this research assessed the best practices for general recruitment, specialized recruitment, general retention, and specialized retention. With the implementation of a well-developed plan, music educators develop and maintain a successful comprehensive program for students to grow, develop, and foster musicianship.

This qualitative historical study examined past patterns to understand the band curriculum's role in recruiting and retaining these students. With an understanding of the role of curriculum in the past, this study offers an outline of a curriculum approach to attract and retain impoverished minority students. The curriculum design followed the ADDIE method, including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research found that the curriculum choices should be culturally relevant, repertoire selected by students, and have varying genres.

On average, only 24 percent of high school students participate in an ensemble throughout their high school careers, and music educators are trying to address this through modern bands. This qualitative, postpositivist, existential-phenomenological study identifies how the implication of modern bands can increase and retain music enrollment in secondary schools and analyzes the effects on other traditional instrumental and vocal ensemble enrollments. This study examined secondary music directors’ perceptions of the impact of modern bands on traditional ensembles. To ascertain how modern bands can help increase enrollment and learn the effect on traditional ensembles, music educators with modern band programs from across the United States provided their perspectives through a qualitative survey. Additionally, music teachers were encouraged to discuss their views on how modern band affects traditional ensembles. The results of this study show that popular music may help increase enrollment in music programs without adversely impacting traditional ensembles. This research study will help music educators and district administrators understand the leverage modern band must increase music ensemble enrollment and its relationship with traditional ensembles. In addition, this research study could encourage more school districts to adopt popular music education to reach students that may have otherwise eluded the music program.

Additionally, literature regarding advocacy for school instrumental programs was reviewed. Although music courses serve an important purpose in a well-rounded education and should be made easily available to all students, there are cases in which policymakers or administrators do not prioritize the need for music education. To facilitate strong student participation in school music programs, the literature points to the benefits of music educators implementing a year round recruitment, retention, and advocacy plan. As part of this capstone project, a twelve-month plan for recruitment, retention, and advocacy was created, grounded in the research and pedagogical literature in music education. The plan outlines strategies such as frequent contact with new recruits and their parents, positive student-teacher relationships with current students, and providing culturally relevant performances that meet the community's expectations. All of the findings are applicable to strategically improving the quality and quantity of the band program in the Valley Park, Missouri school district.

In response to concerns about low enrollment, colleges and universities are adopting vibrant and more contemporary marching bands to serve in the capacity of recruiter and primary ambassador for the institution. To this end, a strategy is developed that will assist with institutional awareness, marketing, academic expansion and student retention. Utilizing the marching band as a strategic tool for student recruitment provides opportunity for the college to attract a greater diversity of students to the institution. In this thesis, historical data is gathered and evidence reported that supports the notion that a collegiate marching band can be used as the primary tool for student recruitment and retention. Talladega College, a historically Black, faith-based college located in the foot-hills of eastern Alabama, implemented such a strategy in 2012 and witnessed institutional growth from 574 students to more than 1300 full time students by 2020. Organizational policies, growth strategies, and recruitment practices, designed to encourage colleges growth, are examined. Steps for success are delineated and alternative practices to rehearsal technique are discussed.

By featuring both physical activity and multi-level brain function, successful band programs support positive student results in both academic and social development. Graduation rates in band students are often higher than that of the overall student population. By recognizing this, increased graduation rates could be supported by increasing and retaining band student enrollment. This study examined and identifies the characteristics of band programs that contribute to increased effectiveness through the utilization of one director for both middle and high school. Additionally, the musical qualities band students having the same director for both middle and high school was examined. Social and peer issues impact the lives of most adolescents. The significant emotional support experienced by many band students during the development of multi-year personal relationships serves to enhance their development and success in areas outside of music. By examining existing research in this context, the study found that there is an increased enrollment in situations where band directors are utilized in both the middle and high school band situation. The literature suggests that the continuity of instruction illustrates a musical rapport and understanding between student and director unique to the band experience.
