Book excerpt: The Association of American Universities (AAU) Research Libraries Project was designed to involve universities in the process of shaping the new electronic environment faced by research libraries. The project has engaged university expertise to develop recommendations for action at the national and institutional levels to assure that the perspectives of research universities can play a defining role in the evolution of national information network policies and practices affecting university education, research, and scholarship. The work of the project was carried out through three task forces whose results are reported here: (1) Acquisition and Distribution of Foreign Language and Area Studies Material; (2) A National Strategy for Managing Scientific and Technological Information; and (3) Intellectual Property Rights in an Electronic Environment. Each report contains an overview of the issue; recommendations of the task force; and proposals for policy implementations. (JLB)

Book Synopsis Academic Freedom in Conflict by : James L. Turk
Download or read book Academic Freedom in Conflict written by James L. Turk and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century academics have had unique rights -- to speak, teach, and write freely. Central to the case for academic freedom is that scholars must be able to voice their views free of fear in order for society to gain a better understanding of ourselves and our world and to be effective teachers. Academic freedom has always faced challenges. Professors have been pressed to alter their work because it offends powerful interests -- both inside and outside the university. Some have been fired or denied jobs for their political views, their criticisms of colleagues and administrators, and their refusal to buckle under corporate pressures to hush up research findings. The sixteen contributors to this volume cite many such instances in Canada and the U.S. More significantly, they point out how governments, corporations, and university administrators today are seeking to narrow academic freedom. Among them: Major donors are acquiring control over university teaching and even hiring decisions University administrators are firing professors with unpopular political views, while pretending that the reasons for their decisions lie elsewhere Governments are using funding mechanisms to force-feed research in some areas, while shutting down inquiry in others Campus-wide policies enforcing civility rules are preventing criticism and debate within a university Judges are issuing decisions which reverse previous rulings supporting academic freedom in the U.S. and Canada Together the contributors to this book examine attempts to restrict academic freedom and explore its legitimate limits.

The challenge of using these materials is being met by developing criteria for selection, looking at cataloging options, and working in cooperation with other institutions. You’ll also learn the different options for document delivery and how to evaluate document delivery products. Book Synopsis Evaluating the Obama Presidency by : Meena Bose
Download or read book Evaluating the Obama Presidency written by Meena Bose and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007 and 2008, Barack Obama ran for president with a message of a shared purpose uniting all Americans, and was elected with expectations that he would usher in a new national culture under an approach grounded in public engagement that would transcend partisan divisions. But in an institutional system designed for incremental and contested policy-making governance, enacting these transformational ambitions proved to be far more difficult than anticipated. This innovative volume assesses the legacy of President Obama, with a conceptual focus on the challenge of meeting his goals with the realities of governing. A diverse group of political science, history, and communication studies experts systematically examines Obama’s performance, accomplishments, and shortcomings through the lens of the expectations gap – the tensions and obstacles of translating campaign promises into policies. The wide, representative set of case studies address campaigning and coalition building, party polarization, presidential communication, executive power, leadership and decision-making, and domestic and foreign policy. With original and deep analysis, these scholars make a unique, enduring contribution to understanding the Obama presidency, the office of the president, and indeed American politics. This insightful, accessible book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the presidency, political communication & rhetoric, and broadly across US government and democracy.
