The 1990s were a decade of increased institutional cooperation among university research libraries, in great part due to spiraling serials costs. Management for Research Libraries Cooperation offers a historical summary of the Research Library Project, the landmark program begun by the American Association of Universities and joined by the Association of Research Libraries. The selection of source documents includes progress reports, conference proceedings, and panel transcripts. This comprehensive book offers an inside look at the Research Library Project, its task forces, the Global Resources Program, and SPARC. In addition, this useful book delivers sound advice, models, and strategies for increasing sharing between institutions. These suggestions for successful cooperation will allow libraries to maximize the available amount of printed and electronic research material while keeping costs under control. Management for Research Libraries Cooperation presents ideas and suggestions for some of the toughest challenges to face librarians today, including: licensing of copyrighted materials for reproduction and distribution funding intellectual property initiatives the implications of electronic publishing gaining acceptance from research faculty for the new library systems fostering the use of technology to improve scholarly communication establishing new modes of cooperation between academic and research libraries finding successful strategies for handling fast-changing scientific and technical information Management for Research Libraries Cooperation is more than a valuable historical collection of documents not readily available elsewhere. It offers ideas to make the librarian's job easier in a field that is changing every day.

Book excerpt: The Association of American Universities (AAU) Research Libraries Project was designed to involve universities in the process of shaping the new electronic environment faced by research libraries. The project has engaged university expertise to develop recommendations for action at the national and institutional levels to assure that the perspectives of research universities can play a defining role in the evolution of national information network policies and practices affecting university education, research, and scholarship. The work of the project was carried out through three task forces whose results are reported here: (1) Acquisition and Distribution of Foreign Language and Area Studies Material; (2) A National Strategy for Managing Scientific and Technological Information; and (3) Intellectual Property Rights in an Electronic Environment. Each report contains an overview of the issue; recommendations of the task force; and proposals for policy implementations. (JLB)

Its focus is to help librarians understand, based on professional literature, the current answer to the question, "How does the library advance the missions of the institution?" This report is also of interest to higher educational professionals external to libraries, including senior leaders, administrators, faculty, and student affairs professionals.

Book excerpt: Supporting ethnic studies is an opportunity to uplift diverse stories and perspectives and to build and affirm such communities and their voices, experiences, and histories. Ethnic studies librarianship requires engagement, a desire to listen and engage with one's constituents, and a focused approach to re-humanizing and emphasizing the voices of those who are being studied. Race and ethnicity, despite their abstractness, have real, concrete meaning and consequences in American society. Being able to see who speaks and who is silenced matters, and ethnic studies librarianship supports the intellectual journey of students in becoming aware of the various ways we see the world and the numerous stories we tell and come across in our lifetime. Ethnic Studies in Academic and Research Libraries serves as a snapshot of critical work that library workers are doing to support ethnic studies, including areas focusing on ethnic and racial experiences across the disciplines. Other curriculums or programs may emphasize race, migration, and diasporic studies, and these intersecting areas are highlighted to ensure work supporting ethnic studies is not solely defined by a discipline, but by commitment to programs that uplift underserved and underrepresented ethnic communities and communities of color. Twenty chapters are broken into three thorough sections: Instruction, Liaison Engagement, and Outreach Collections Projects and Programs Collaborations, Special Projects, and Community Partnerships Ethnic studies programs, faculty, and students can lack visibility in librarianship, though there are many opportunities to engage with and support these interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programs. Ethnic Studies in Academic and Research Libraries captures case studies, programs, and engagements within the field(s) of ethnic studies and how library workers are creating and documenting important support services and resources for these communities of learners, scholars, activists, and educators. We need to think critically about how we support ethnic studies and our faculty colleagues in these departments, especially during challenging times in fiscal crises and the systemic violence and oppression that occurs in higher education, in our institutions, in our communities, in our profession, and in our histories. What we collect, preserve, share, and uplift reflects who we are and our priorities.

It analyses the most effective mechanisms for establishing a cooperative collection agenda, including making the most economical use of library funds; inadequate delivery mechanisms; and the effects of the Internet on the expectations of library patrons and how interlibrary loans can help. It concludes that a library's collection development future may lie in providing financial subsidies to fund large storehouses of digital records.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic E-Books: Publishers, Librarians, and Users provides readers with a view of the changing and emerging roles of electronic books in higher education. The three main sections contain contributions by experts in the publisher/vendor arena, as well as by librarians who report on both the challenges of offering and managing e-books and on the issues surrounding patron use of e-books. The case study section offers perspectives from seven different sizes and types of libraries whose librarians describe innovative and thought-provoking projects involving e-books. Read about perspectives on e-books from organizations as diverse as a commercial publisher and an association press. Learn about the viewpoint of a jobber. Find out about the e-book challenges facing librarians, such as the quest to control costs in the patron-driven acquisitions (PDA) model, how to solve the dilemma of resource sharing with e-books, and how to manage PDA in the consortial environment. See what patron use of e-books reveals about reading habits and disciplinary differences. Finally, in the case study section, discover how to promote scholarly e-books, how to manage an e-reader checkout program, and how one library replaced most of its print collection with e-books. These and other examples illustrate how innovative librarians use e-books to enhance users’ experiences with scholarly works.
