Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western world's responses to genocide have been slow, unwieldly and sometimes unfit for purpose. So argues David Patrick in this essential new contribution to the aid and intervention debate. While the UK and US have historically been committed to the ideals of human rights, freedom and equality, their actual material reactions are more usually dictated by geopolitical 'noise', pre-conceived ideas of worth and the media attention-spans of individual elected leaders. Utilizing a wide-ranging quantitative analysis of media reporting across the globe, Patrick argues that an over-reliance on the Holocaust as the framing device we use to try and come to terms with such horrors can lead to slow responses, misinterpretation and category errors - in both Rwanda and Bosnia, much energy was expended trying to ascertain whether these regions qualified for 'genocide' status. The Reporting of Genocide demonstrates how such tragedies are reduced to stereotypes in the media - framed in terms of innocent victims and brutal oppressors - which can over-simplify the situation on the ground. This in turn can lead to mixed and inadequate responses from governments. Reporting on Genocide also seeks to address how responses to genocides across the globe can be improved, and will be essential reading for policy-makers and for scholars of genocide and the media.

Today, as the world enters a new century and a new millennium, Sudan's civil war has degenerated into an inferno of carnage and destruction. Sudan's war, however, is no different from wars elsewhere; it is an entangled political, cultural and social weave with equally intricate international ramifications. This volume charts Sudanese’s history of conflict.

Book excerpt: This work explores the interaction of American Protestant missionaries with Iranians during the 1960s and 1970s. It focuses on the missionary activities of four American Protestant groups: Presbyterians, Assemblies of God, International Missions, and Southern Baptists. It argues that American missionaries’ predisposition toward their own culture confused their message of the gospel and added to the negative perception of Christianity among Iranians. This bias was seen primarily in the American missionaries’ desire to modernize Iran through education and healthcare, and between the missionaries’ relationship with Iranian Christians. Iranian attitudes towards missionary involvement in these areas are investigated, as is the changing American missionary strategy from a traditional method where missionaries had the final say on most matters related to American and Iranian Christian interaction, to the beginnings of an indigenous system where a partnership developed between the missionary and the Iranian Christian.

It involved issues of self-determination, non-recognition, and human rights. This book was first published in 1996, five years before East Timor regained its independence. It thus serves as a record of the basic materials relating to the historical background, to the circumstances of the Indonesian invasion and following incorporation of East Timor, to the subsequent development of the dispute in the light of the international community's response to it, and, finally, to the 1995 judgment of the International Court of Justice in the case concerning East Timor between Portugal and Australia. The volume contains a substantive introduction which places the documents in context and provides an overview of the political and legal issues of the dispute.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keith Robbins, building on his previous writing on the modern history of the interlocking but distinctive territories of the British Isles, takes a wide-ranging, innovative and challenging look at the twentieth-century history of the main bodies, at once national and universal, which have collectively constituted the Christian Church. The protracted search for elusive unity is emphasized. Particular beliefs, attitudes, policies and structures are located in their social and cultural contexts. Prominent individuals, clerical and lay, are scrutinized. Religion and politics intermingle, highlighting, for churches and states, fundamental questions of identity and allegiance, of public and private values, in a century of ideological conflict, violent confrontation (in Ireland), two world wars and protracted Cold War. The massive change experienced by the countries and people of the Isles since 1900 has encompassed shifting relationships between England, Ireland (and Northern Ireland), Scotland and Wales, the end of the British Empire, the emergence of a new Europe and, latterly, major immigration of adherents of Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and other faiths from outside Europe: developments scarcely conceivable at the outset. Such a broad contextual perspective provides an essential background to understanding the puzzling ambiguities evident both in secularization and enduring Christian faith. Robbins provides a cogent and compelling overview of this turbulent century for the churches of the Isles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of a National Lottery into the United Kingdom created a unique regulatory challenge. The response to this challenge is embodied in arrangements informed not by international precedent but by privatisation policies pursued by successive Conservative governments between 1979 and 1994 when the Lottery was launched. Dr Douglas assesses the success of the Lottery's regulation against the objectives set out in the enabling legislation: the upholding of the Lottery's propriety, the protection of the players, and the maximising of the funds to be applied to the Good Causes. Lessons learned during the initial Licence period will inform the new seven year Licence from October 2001, the operator chosen for the new term, and in particular the role of the profit motive within the new arrangements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present St Paul's Cathedral, Christopher Wren's masterpiece, is the fourth religious building to occupy the site. Its location in the heart of the capital reflects its importance in the English church while the photographs of it burning during the Blitz forms one of the most powerful and familiar images of London during recent times. This substantial and richly illustrated study, published to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Paul's, presents 42 scholarly contributions which approach the cathedral from a range of perspectives. All are supported by photographs, illustrations and plans of the exterior and interior of St Paul's, both past and present. Eight essays discuss the history of St Paul's, demonstrating the role of the cathedral in the formation of England's church and state from the 7th century onwards; nine essays examine the organisation and function of the cathedral during the Middle Ages, looking at, for example, the arrangement of the precinct, the tombs, the Dean's household during the 15th century, the liturgy and the archaeology. The remaining papers examine many aspects of Wren's cathedral, including its construction, fittings and embellishments, its estates and income, music and rituals, its place in London, its library, its role in the book trade and its reputation.

Book excerpt: Alistair Edgar and David Haglund examine changes in the international demand for defence products in the post-Cold War era; review the reorganization and rationalization of the supply side of the international defence market through various government policy initiatives and corporate strategies; and discuss the ways in which the Canadian government and defence producers have attempted to cope with this new and uncertain international environment. They also explore the international and domestic contexts - military, economic, and political - within which defence industries operate. Edgar and Haglund's analysis draws on extensive interviews with political and industry leaders, military personnel, and government officials from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Spain, and Germany. This timely study of the domestic, American, and other NATO defence markets will interest scholars and students of Canadian defence policy, Canadian foreign policy, and Canadian external relations, and public servants, politicians, and personnel in the industry.
