Book Synopsis Electoral Politics and Hindu Nationalism in India by : Koushiki Dasgupta
Download or read book Electoral Politics and Hindu Nationalism in India written by Koushiki Dasgupta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the rise and growth of the Hindu nationalist party Bharatiya Jana Sangh in post independent India, tracking the electoral journey of the party from 1951 to 1971. Offering a comprehensive analysis of the party Bharatiya Jana Sangh - its origin, ideas and electoral performances in the first two decades of its journey - the book provides an overview of the state-wise electoral record of the party mobilizing Hindu support and managing factional disputes. It surveys the issues of conflicts between the intraparty factions dominated by the recruits from the Rastriya Swayamseyak Sangh and the others. The author also presents a critique of the Hindutva politics of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh on account of its somewhat imperfect appeal among the masses and its problems in raising real issues of socio-economic concern. With a special emphasis on the states situated outside the Hindi language belt of Northern India, the electoral outcome of the Jana Sangh during each national and state legislative elections are analysed. Based on the dialectics of ideology and exigency, this book makes a thorough investigation of the leadership-succession crises in the party, patterns of vote sharing at the regional level and trends of coalition with the non-Congress parties in the states. Providing a nuanced understanding of the processes leading to the strengthening of right-wing political parties in India, the book will be of interest to academics working in the fields of nationalism, party politics and South Asian Politics.
Book Synopsis Violent Conjunctures in Democratic India by : Amrita Basu
Download or read book Violent Conjunctures in Democratic India written by Amrita Basu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a pioneering study of when and why Hindu Nationalists have engaged in discrimination and violence against minorities in contemporary India. Amrita Basu asks why the incidence and severity of violence differs significantly across Indian states, within states, and through time. Contrary to many predictions, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has neither consistently engaged in anti-minority violence nor been compelled by the centrifugal pressures of democracy to become a centrist party. Rather, the national BJP has alternated between moderation and militancy. Hindu nationalist violence has been conjunctural, determined by relations among its own party, social movement organization, and state governments, and on the character of opposition states, parties and movements. This study accords particular importance to the role of social movements in precipitating anti-minority violence. It calls for a broader understanding of social movements and a greater appreciation of their relationship to political parties.

Book excerpt: Lying in the bed and sipping their drinks, both of them started feeling warmth descending down their gullets. Caressing each other they had a feeling of déjà vu. After sometimes, the warmth started engulfing their bodies as well giving color to their faces. There was an insidious openness between them by now and he was surprised, when she suddenly pounced upon him and holding his face in both hands, with her mouth slightly open pressed her lips tightly against his and started sucking his lower lip. This chivalry aroused him too and the hooliganism started with full force. Both were fresh after the sound sleep in the afternoon. She seemed to be nearing the perpetual destination and begged with painful hilarity to hurry up. Within a few seconds, she gave a loud cry followed by a deafening silence as if the whole universe had come to a standstill. They felt as if they were falling abysmally beneath the deep earth in a bottomless gorge without any hope of survival. He pinched his own shoulder to see whether he was alive or not?

Book Synopsis Ballots and Breakups by : Sunita Aron
Download or read book Ballots and Breakups written by Sunita Aron and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winning elections is not everything, what is crucial for the good health of a robust democracy is forming a government. From strategically devised pre-poll alliances to hastily stitched together post-poll associations, noted journalist Sunita Aron has travelled the length and breadth of the country, painstakingly documenting the drama and dharma of coalition politics in India. The result of her exhaustive research and insightful analysis, Ballots and Breakups is a cracker of a read. As Indian voters deliver fractured verdicts, political parties resort to constructing fragile coalitions by hook or by crook. The hapless casualties of this relentless quest for power are the Indian voters and this book is for them, as the writer eloquently exhorts for the need of common guidelines on the formation of a government in the case of a hung house. A gripping take on coalition politics in India, Aron charts a riveting tale of modern Indian politics that has all the masala of a Bollywood potboiler, but the ending, the writer asserts, has to be happy like that of any Hindi film, 'stable governments and a prosperous society even in a hung house!'

Book Synopsis Indian Politics and Society Since Independence by : Bidyut Chakrabarty
Download or read book Indian Politics and Society Since Independence written by Bidyut Chakrabarty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-05-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on politics and society in India, this book explores new areas enmeshed in the complex social, economic and political processes in the country. Linking the structural characteristics with the broader sociological context, the book emphasizes the strong influence of sociological issues on politics, such as social milieu shaping and the articulation of the political in day-to-day events. Political events are connected with the ever-changing social, economic and political processes in order to provide an analytical framework to explain ‘peculiarities’ of Indian politics. Bidyut Chakrabarty argues that three major ideological influences of colonialism, nationalism and democracy have provided the foundational values of Indian politics. Structured thematically and chronologically, this work is a useful resource for students of political science, sociology and South Asian studies.
