Further additions include: calculation methods for membrane action in floor slabs exposed to fires; a chapter on composite steel-concrete construction; and case studies of structural collapses. The book begins with an introduction to fire safety in buildings, from fire growth and development to the devastating effects of severe fires on large building structures. Methods of calculating fire severity and fire resistance are then described in detail, together with both simple and advanced methods for assessing and designing for structural fire safety in buildings constructed from structural steel, reinforced concrete, or structural timber. Structural Design for Fire Safety, 2nd edition bridges the information gap between fire safety engineers, structural engineers and building officials, and it will be useful for many others including architects, code writers, building designers, and firefighters. Key features: • Updated references to current research, as well as new end-of-chapter questions and worked examples. •Authors experienced in teaching, researching, and applying structural fire engineering in real buildings. • A focus on basic principles rather than specific building code requirements, for an international audience. Book Synopsis Philosophies of Structural Safety and Reliability by : Vladimir Raizer
Download or read book Philosophies of Structural Safety and Reliability written by Vladimir Raizer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty is certain to be found in structural engineering, making it crucial to structure design. This book covers three competing philosophies behind structural safety and reliability: probabilistic analysis, fuzzy set-based treatments, and the convex approach. Explaining the theory behind probabilistic analysis, fuzzy set-based treatments, and the convex approach in detail, alongside their implementation, use, and benefits, the book compares and contrasts these methods, enabling the reader to solve problems associated with uncertainty. These uncertainty issues can be seen in civil engineering structures, risk of earthquakes, impact of rough seas on ships, and turbulence affecting aerospace vehicles. Building on the authors’ many years of experience in the field, Philosophies of Structural Safety and Reliability is an essential guide to structural uncertainty. Topics covered in the book include properties of materials and their structural deterioration, safety factor and reliability, risk evaluation and loads, and their combinations. This book will be of interest to students and professionals in the fields of aerospace, civil, mechanical, marine, and ocean engineering.
Book Synopsis Steel Design 1: Structural Basics by : H. H. Snijder
Download or read book Steel Design 1: Structural Basics written by H. H. Snijder and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook covers the design and analysis of steel structures for buildings according to EN 1990 (Eurocode 0), EN 1991 (Eurocode 1) and EN 1993 (Eurocode 3). Chapter 1 describes the theory and background of EN 1990 in terms of structural safety, reliability and the design values of resistances and actions. Chapter 2 deals with actions and deformations described in EN 1991. The permanent loads and vari¬able actions and in particular the imposed loads and the snow loads and wind actions are discussed. This chapter also contains three worked examples to determine the actions on a floor in a residential house, the actions on a free-standing platform canopy at a station and the wind actions on the façades of an office building. Chapter 3 is about modelling, discussing the schematisation of the structural system, the joints and the material properties as well as the cross-section properties. Chapter 4 deals with the classification of frames and the various analysis methods for unbraced and braced frames. Chapter 5 then goes deeper into these analysis methods to determine the force distribution and defor¬mations. Chapter 6 deals with the assessment by code-checking of (parts of) the steel structure with EN 1993-1-1 and EN 1993-1-8. At a basic level, the assessment of the resistance of cross-sections, the stability of members under axial forces and the resistance of bolted and welded connections are explained. Chapter 7 discusses in an extensive way the assessment by code-checking of the resistance of cross-sections, both for single and combined internal forces. The principles of the assessment of the resistance of cross-sections according to elastic and plastic theory are also discussed.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Safety and Reliability of Structures by : Jörg Schneider
Download or read book Introduction to Safety and Reliability of Structures written by Jörg Schneider and published by IABSE. This book was released on 2006 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural engineers devote all their effort to meeting society¿s expectations efficiently. Engineers and scientists work together to develop solutions to structural problems. Given that nothing is absolutely and eternally safe, the goal is to attain an acceptably small probability of failure for a structure. Reliability analysis is part of the science and practice of engineering today, not only with respect to the safety of structures, but also for questions of serviceability and other requirements of technical systems that might be impacted by some probability. The present volume takes a rather broad approach to the safety of structures and related topics. It treats the underlying concepts of risk and safety and introduces the reader to the main concepts and strategies for dealing with hazards. A chapter is devoted to the processing of data into information that is relevant for applying reliability theory. The two main chapters deal with the modelling of structures and with methods of reliability analysis. Another chapter focuses on problems related to establishing target reliabilities, assessing existing structures, and on effective strategies against human error. The Appendix supports the application of the methods proposed and refers readers to a number of related computer programs.

Book Synopsis Concrete Buildings Analysis for Safe Construction by : W.F. Chen
Download or read book Concrete Buildings Analysis for Safe Construction written by W.F. Chen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-09-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most critical state of a structure's lifetime is during construction; many more disasters occur during construction than after projects have been completed. This book helps readers to determine construction loads; understand performance criteria during construction; prevent construction delays; maintain structural strength and stability; find relevant codes and standards; learn methods of shoring, reshoring, bracing and guying, and completing other temporary work; spot potential hazards; eliminate construction-created structural disaster; and maximize site safety. The book also covers concrete frame analysis and provides comprehensive treatment of topics such as construction procedures and shoring scheduling. Concrete Buildings: Analysis for Safe Construction also features a diskette that contains the computer program, SHORING2, a menu-driven, user-friendly program capable of calculating the loads imposed on shores, reshores, and slabs at every state of construction on high-rise reinforced concrete buildings. The program can also assess safety at each stage of construction. Concrete Buildings: Analysis for Safe Construction's "back to basics" approach, realistic detailed worked examples, and emphasis on safety through the use of computer programs, will benefit structural engineers, contractors, inspectors, construction managers, building officials, and construction safety specialists. The book is an important guide for safe analysis of concrete buildings during construction.
