Continuing ethnic conflicts, often caused by land, water and resource issues, or due to political factors, are damaging prospects of regional stability, and a unified, democratic and prosperous Ethiopia. Concerted conflict prevention and resolution efforts are required, but to date have been inadequate. Minority communities that are discriminated against, excluded and marginalized are frequently victims of conflict, may be forcibly displaced from their traditional territories and lack opportunities and capacity to promote and protect their rights. In Unequal Treatment, a panel of experts documents this evidence and explores how persons of color experience the health care environment. The book examines how disparities in treatment may arise in health care systems and looks at aspects of the clinical encounter that may contribute to such disparities. Patients' and providers' attitudes, expectations, and behavior are analyzed. How to intervene? Unequal Treatment offers recommendations for improvements in medical care financing, allocation of care, availability of language translation, community-based care, and other arenas.
