This review, which summarizes the outstanding factors in the week's cotton trade, both domestic and foreign, has been promptly approved by the leading cotton growers and the press throughout the South. An official weekly summary of this character has not heretofore been available except on a very limited scale to southern newspapers. This weekly review is prepared on Saturday in Washington and telegraphed to Atlanta and Memphis, where it is mimeographed and mailed the same day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Chief of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 1933 The ultimate application of an effective land-use program must be largely in terms of specific areas. This requires special study of the conditions, problems, and prospects of particular regions. Such a study was completed last year of land utilization in 13 hill towns of Vermont characterized by extensive farm abandon ment. This study revealed clearly the waste and misery that attend the slow natural adjustment Of an old settled area to the forces of decline and showed forcefully the need for a prompt and energetic program of reorganization with the help of the State. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Chief of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 1941 An outstanding and a difficult part of the work during the year was the effort to summarize the work and thinking of all the State and county agricultural planning committees into a single report on agri cultural policy in relation to the defense Situation. The analyses and recommendations Of the State agricultural planning committees as to the current situation and measures needed to meet the impact of the war and the probable Shocks of the following peace have already had a direct effect upon the several programs Of the odepartment. Some Of the measures suggested have already been put into effect, others are incorporated in the suggested national production goals for 1942, and others, it is hoped, will be made a part of the Department's program to meet the shocks Of the post-defense period. Only a brief summary of these recommendations can be given here, but they are important as an indication of the scope and Spirit of current farm thinking. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 34th U.S. president to hold office, Dwight D. Eisenhower won America over with his irresistible I like Ike slogan. Bringing to the presidency his prestige as a commanding general during World War II, he worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the cold war. Pursuing the moderate policies of Modern Republicanism, he left a legacy of a stronger and more powerful nation. From his crucial role in support of Brown v. Board of Education to the National Defense Education Act, The Eisenhower Years provides a well-balanced study of these politically charged years. Biographical entries on key figures of the Eisenhower era, such as Allen W. Dulles, Joseph R. McCarthy, and Rosa Parks, combine with speeches such as the Military Industrial Complex speech, the Open Skies proposal, the disturbance at Little Rock address, Eisenhower Doctrine, and his speech after the Soviet launch of Sputnik to give an in-depth look at the executive actions of this administration.
Book Synopsis Science, the Endless Frontier by : Vannevar Bush
Download or read book Science, the Endless Frontier written by Vannevar Bush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic case for why government must support science—with a new essay by physicist and former congressman Rush Holt on what democracy needs from science today Science, the Endless Frontier is recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of science in society and government’s responsibility to support scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Bush’s vision set the course for US science policy for more than half a century, building the world’s most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a changing funding landscape and challenges to science’s very credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government. This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt, who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report’s legacy and relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the public’s ability to cope with today’s issues—such as public health, the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies in modern society—requires a more capacious understanding of what science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think of their obligation to society and what the public should demand from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science’s value for democracy and society at large. A touchstone for concerned citizens, scientists, and policymakers, Science, the Endless Frontier endures as a passionate articulation of the power and potential of science.
