Book excerpt: This is the first guide yet produced to the amphibians and reptiles of New York State, a large and heavily populated state that hosts a surprisingly diverse and interesting community of amphibians and reptiles. This much needed guide to the identification, distribution, natural history and conservation of the amphibians and reptiles of New York State fill a long-empty niche. The book is the first comprehensive presentation of the distributional data gathered for the New York State Amphibian and Reptile Atlas project. With more than 60,000 records compiled from 1990-1999, this extraordinary and up-to-date database provides a rich foundation for the book. This volume provides detailed narratives on the 69 species native to New York State. With a heavy emphasis on conservation biology, the book also includes chapters on threats, legal protections, habitat conservation guidelines, and conservation case studies. Also included are 67 distribution maps and 62 pages of color photographs contributed by more than 30 photographers. As a field guide or a desk reference, The Amphibians and Reptiles of New York State is indispensable for anyone interested in the vertebrate animals of the Northeast, as well as students, field researchers and natural resource professionals.

Book excerpt: Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene c. carolina) have experienced range-wide declines as the result of extensive habitat loss, fragmentation, and alteration. The Oak Openings Region of northwestern Ohio is a biodiversity hotspot that exists in a highly fragmented landscape and provides a unique case study from which to examine the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on Eastern Box Turtles. In an effort to inform management and conservation efforts in the Oak Openings Region, I initiated a radio-telemetry project with the following objectives: 1) examine the spatial ecology of Eastern Box Turtles over several years to understand how they interact with their habitat in an area as unique as the Oak Openings Region, 2) develop predictive models depicting the temporal distributions of Eastern Box Turtles, 3) examine the impacts of one of the most common management tools in the Oak Openings Region, prescribed fire, on Eastern Box Turtles, and 4) evaluate pattern-recognition software as a low-cost alternative of identifying individual Eastern Box Turtles. Turtles at my study site exhibited larger home ranges than previously reported for this species as well as hierarchical habitat selection at multiple scales. Predicted distributions followed phenological shifts in habitat use and were influenced primarily by habitat type and canopy cover. Prescribed fires have the potential to have a devastating effect on box turtle populations, but management activities that take box turtle ecology into account will minimize these impacts while maintaining a critical disturbance regime. Computer-assisted photo-recognition has a great deal of potential as a supplemental method of identifying box turtles and provides a low-cost means of incorporating citizen science data into mark-recapture studies. My work suggests that conservation for Eastern Box Turtles in the Oak Openings Region should focus on maintenance and restoration of remaining box turtle habitat, connectivity between critical habitat patches, and altering burn regimes to minimize negative effects on box turtles while still meeting ecosystem-level management objectives.

Book excerpt: Box turtle (Terrapene carolina) populations have been declining over the last several decades, and one major cause is increasing urbanization. As a result of habitat fragmentation, wildlife managers are frequently turning to new and alternative management strategies. Traditional box turtle management has included relocation, which has been met with limited success. This study aims to combine these strategies with another less-studied one: forcing turtles to overwinter on site by penning them in an outdoor enclosure. Two sets of juvenile box turtles were released at the Virginia Commonwealth University Rice Center: one penned on site in a pen for one year, the other allowed to move freely. Our objective was to compare a variety of factors between these two groups to see if penning was as effective as traditional approaches. Movement and location patterns were tracked using radio transmitters for two years and analyzed using GPS technology. Body condition and health status of all turtles were measured and compared over time as well. Finally, a life history model was developed to determine the effectiveness of management programs. While the penning treatment significantly reduced activity areas, it appears that all juvenile turtles had high site fidelity (87.5%) regardless of treatment. The eastern box turtle seems to be a prime candidate for penning used in conjunction with other management options.

Book excerpt: The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is one of the most common reptiles in North America, but is soon to be threatened due to increased urbanization, disease, and the pet and food trades. In order to assist resource managers in choosing suitable sites for relocation studies, more information on the winter ecology of this species is necessary. We examined the temperature tolerance, microhabitat and degree of philopatry to hibernacula for juvenile and adult E. box turtles for two consecutive winters in Charles City Co, VA. The turtles were tracked via radio telemetry to record point locations during the active and inactive seasons. iButton data loggers were attached to each turtle to record temperature throughout winter. Vegetation data were collected and analyzed to determine if there are microhabitat differences between adult and juvenile turtles, and between occupied and random plots. Philopatry to wintering hibernacula was determined by measurements in the field and using ArcGIS. Adults had significantly higher minimum temperatures than juveniles during the first winter (P=0.027), but not during the second winter (P=0.327). Shrub and canopy cover were marginally higher for random plots than for occupied turtle hibernacula plots (P=0.066 and P=0.092, respectively); however there were no significant differences for any of the vegetation variables between adults and juveniles. Some of the turtles demonstrated site fidelity of their hibernacula. The temperature data from this study suggests that juveniles may have poorer hibernacula selection and therefore lower minimum temperatures compared with adults, but this was not seen in our second season suggesting that juvenile turtles may learn to choose better hibernacula or to dig deeper. The difference in findings for the two winters could be attributed to illness by several of the turtles the first winter, by increased maturity in the juveniles the second winter or by the significant difference in ambient temperature for the two winters (P=0.0001). Juveniles do not differ from adults in microhabitat selection, therefore resource managers may not need to plan differently for juveniles and adults in relocation studies. We also conclude that both age groups of T. c. carolina exhibit site fidelity of hibernacula.

Book excerpt: The relatively recent rise in public concern for animal welfare has led to the improvement of the housing conditions for a wide variety of captive animals. Despite this heightened awareness, reptiles have been relatively ignored. There has been a long held misconception that reptiles are stoic, adaptable and highly tolerant to abnormal conditions. However, because reptiles have strong innate drives and are not subject to parental and social education, they may actually be less tolerant and less adaptable to an unnatural, captive environment. This study examined the physiological and behavioral impact of housing conditions on the captive eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina), and determined if box turtles exhibit a preference for an enriched or barren environment. Thirty-eight box turtles were randomized to either a barren (flat newspaper substrate) or enriched (cypress mulch substrate, shredded paper and a hide box) enclosure for a period of one month. Complete blood counts, fecal corticosterone, and body weights were measured at the beginning and end of the treatment period. Behavior was also assessed during the study. Turtles in enriched enclosures had a significantly lower heterophil to lymphocyte ratio (HD) at the end of the treatment period, indicating they were less stressed than barren-housed turtles. Enriched-housed turtles also spent significantly less time engaged in escape behavior, suggesting they were more accepting of their housing conditions. There was no significant difference in fecal corticosterone or body weight change between the two treatments. Prior to treatment each turtle was placed in a preference test system in which it could move freely between a barren and enriched environment. Relative dwelling time was determined for each environment. Turtles showed a distinct preference for the enriched environment. After the one-month housing experiment turtles were reevaluated for preference to determine if previous housing experien.

Turtles are among the vertebrate taxa most affected by roads because of their low vagility and use of road and road-side habitats. In 2013, Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio was bisected by a new highway, affecting a road-naive population of eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina), a species of concern in Ohio and vulnerable throughout its range. The goal of this study was to evaluate ecological, physiological, and behavioral effects of proximity to this new road in this road-naive population of turtles

Book excerpt: Understanding habitat use and movement patterns of hatchling Terepene carolina carolina (Eastern Box Turtles) may be critical to guide conservation efforts, since very little is known about this early life-history stage. I primarily investigated post-emergence movements and habitat associations of T. carolina hatchlings up until hibernation. This study will also address other ecological aspects of the box turtles such as nesting and hibernation. Radio-telemetry was used to relocate ten hatchlings every other day for three months at a research site located in Hamden, Connecticut. Distance moved (in meters), direction (in degrees) and vegetation (percent coverage estimates in one meter plots) were measured at every observation. As part of the observation, two random plots of equal distance from the previous location were also measured. Clutch sizes ranged from a single egg to seven eggs and all nests were located in an open area composed mostly of circumneutral sandy substrates (pH range from 5.96 to 7.63). Mean length of incubation ranged from 83 to 97 days, and on average the hatch success rate was 64%. Hatchlings spent a majority of their time in open fields in plots having lower light intensity (P 0.001), less bare ground (P = 0.003), more leaf litter (P = 0.041), more thatch (P = 0.009), contained more Rubus (P 0.001), and/or thicker grasses (P = 0.002) than random plots. Distance moved between observations ranged from 0 to 52.7 m and all hatchling movements appear to have been in a north/northeast direction. Most hatchlings began hibernating between the 8th and 11th of October, which correlates with the first frost of the season. All hatchlings emerged from hibernation the week of the last frost (April 6th) and average hibernation was 150 days. Eastern box turtles are of conservation concern, and habitat requirements as well as movement should be considered in management decisions. My data suggests that these hatchlings traveled directionally after leaving the nest and sought concealing vegetation cover. Knowing potential movement patterns and characteristics of a habitat that hatchlings seek out is critical in guiding future management and conservation decisions.
