Book Synopsis Renfield's Journal by : George DeVein
Download or read book Renfield's Journal written by George DeVein and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who are familiar with Dracula know it to be comprised of the diaries and correspondence of several different people. The story unfolds through their eyes, from their points-of-view. One person's entries, however, are missing. That person is the madman of Purfleet Asylum who could see and hear the world through The Master. His abilities were dismissed until it was too late. Why was he made to suffer the further indignity of having his words suppressed? With this volume I will right that omission. These are the diaries of R. M. Renfield. Alone in 1890s London, a place still reeling from the Ripper murders, Renfield is contacted from afar--contacted through his thoughts by "The Master." And through Him, Renfield can see the world as The Master flies above it; travel inside a wolf or a cat; and even see the future. These gifts, however, come with a price: blood. Renfield is the only one who comprehends the danger about to descend. Can he warn others without being labeled insane?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lucas mimics Stoker's style so well that it's hard to distinguish his own writing from passages interpolated from Dracula. A fully humanized character study.” – Publishers Weekly Perhaps the most infamous supporting character in all of Gothic Horror is R.M. Renfield, the unstable patient under observation at Dr. Seward’s Carfax Asylum in Bram Stoker’s Dracula—a pathetic wretch who prophesies the imminent arrival of “the Master” while covertly feeding on spiders and flies. Yet Stoker’s 1887 classic tells us almost nothing about him. Why—and how—was such an unsavory figure chosen to be the Un-dead Count’s groveling envoy? In this remarkable harbinger of the “mash-up” novel, author Tim Lucas—with the help of Stoker himself—takes us on an illuminating, magical, sometimes strangely erotic investigation into Renfield’s origin, fitted seamlessly within the language and the flurry of correspondence and other documentation found in Dracula. THE BOOK OF RENFIELD reinvigorates Stoker’s seminal horror masterpiece with numerous, uncanny stories within stories—alternately ghastly, marvelous, and hauntingly tender, framing DRACULA’s robust blood-and-thunder with a flair for meta and modernity. This Newly Revised Edition is extensively reworded and restructured, incorporating many paragraphs of content deleted from the original 2005 text. Also included is a contextualizing new Foreword by horror expert Stephen R. Bissette and a substantial Afterword by the author.

Book excerpt: “Excellent.”—Library Journal A slave of Dracula emerges from the shadows in a terrifying reinvention of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Renfield, confined to an asylum, obsesses in his diary, pens letters of insane passion to his wife, and still answers his Master’s calling. Ordered to hunt and kill Van Helsing, Renfield complies, setting the stage for the ultimate battle between good and evil, the living and the dead. It will take him from the dark crypts of Dracula’s castle to the more personal darkness of his own descent into madness, and the shocking truth of where it all began. “Hambly creates a past for this possessed man via his diaries and letters to his wife. . . . [she] superbly weaves Stoker’s plot and style with her own, producing one of the best recent vampire yarns.”—Booklist

Book Synopsis The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker by : Elizabeth Miller
Download or read book The Lost Journal of Bram Stoker written by Elizabeth Miller and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently a long-lost journal belonging to Dracula author Bram Stoker was discovered in his great-grandson Noel's dusty attic. Published now to coincide with the centenary of Stoker's death, the text of this stunning find, written between 1871 and 1881, mostly in his native Dublin, will captivate scholars of Gothic literature and Dracula fans alike. Painstakingly transcribed and researched, the journal offers intriguing new insights into the complex nature of the man who wrote Dracula more than one hundred years ago. Assisted by a team of scholars and Stoker historians, Dacre Stoker and Professor Elizabeth Miller neatly connect the dots between the contents of the journal and Bram Stoker's later work, most significantly Dracula. Until now, discussion of the very private Bram Stoker has, by necessity, been largely speculative. Other than names and dates provided by biographers, and Bram Stoker's own sparse self-revelation in his non-fiction, little has been available to support character studies of this fascinating Victorian gentleman. This personal journal shows Stoker's private thoughts and his developing style, and is a veritable treasure trove of oddities, musings and anecdotes.

Book excerpt: Y ou could say man into wolf and wolf into man got blasted into existence. You could also say the Tasmanian Aborigines and the Tasmanian Wolf got blasted out of existence. It’s called extinction and it lasts forever and, when Ihe the wolfman did the sums of early Tasmania, it all added up. This was except for one thing… the existence of the truly last Thylacine Wolf hiding out somewhere life-giving and life-preserving from the ever-hunters and the always-killers. This made it all the more urgent for Ihe to find the great beast first, in order to brace up its unique animal-kind courage before they tracked it down. They are always tracking it down. But Ihe was Man and also Wolf, as one, and he was on the scent too… that for every eye done to extinction was a human hunter’s eye and for every done-in eye tooth was a human hunter’s tooth. And for flesh, what better than human flesh? But first, there was his famous arch-enemy to hunt down and run from, both. It was bad enough when he planted his foot in the wrong place and the Army’s report about it concluding: ‘In any hairy situations, this will undoubtedly change how he gets a lot of looks’. But what would the Army know about the trauma that transmogrifies? It’s always been nits or nothing with him, anyhow. It’s just that Ihe the wolfman didn’t want to end up like the presumed last Tasmanian Wolf hanging from a rafter. That great shame.

Book Synopsis The Most Dreadful Visitation by : Valerie Pedlar
Download or read book The Most Dreadful Visitation written by Valerie Pedlar and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian literature is rife with scenes of madness, with mental disorder functioning as everything from a simple plot device to a commentary on the foundations of Victorian society. But while madness in Victorian fiction has been much studied, most scholarship has focused on the portrayal of madness in women; male mental disorder in the period has suffered comparative neglect. Valerie Pedlar corrects this imbalance in The 'Most Dreadful Visitation.' This extraordinary study explores a wide range of Victorian writings to consider the relationship between the portrayal of mental illness in literary works and the portrayal of similar disorders in the writings of doctors and psychologists. Pedlar presents in-depth studies of Dickens's Barnaby Rudge, Tennyson's Maud, Wilkie Collins's Basil, and Trollope's He Knew He Was Right, considering each work in the context of Victorian understandings--and fears--of mental degeneracy. An Open Access edition of this work is available on the OAPEN Library.
