He died in Cambridge, Mas sachusetts, in 1999. He had several careers, most notably as a mathematician, but also as a philosopher and a consultant to the United States government. His mathe matical career was equally varied. His early mathematical studies were at Princeton (1950 to 1953) and Yale (1953 to 1956). In 1956, he completed his doctoral thesis under the direction of Jacob T. Schwartz. This thesis was published as the pa per "Extension theory of differential operators I", the first paper reprinted in this volume. Rota's early work was in analysis, more specifically, in operator theory, differ ential equations, ergodic theory, and probability theory. In the 1960's, Rota was motivated by problems in fluctuation theory to study some operator identities of Glen Baxter (see [7]). Together with other problems in probability theory, this led Rota to study combinatorics. His series of papers, "On the foundations of combi natorial theory", led to a fundamental re-evaluation of the subject. Later, in the 1990's, Rota returned to some of the problems in analysis and probability theory which motivated his work in combinatorics. This was his intention all along, and his early death robbed mathematics of his unique perspective on linkages between the discrete and the continuous. Glimpses of his new research programs can be found in [2,3,6,9,10].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Grothendieck, the notion of topos is "the bed or deep river where come to be married geometry and algebra, topology and arithmetic, mathematical logic and category theory, the world of the continuous and that of discontinuous or discrete structures". It is what he had "conceived of most broad to perceive with finesse, by the same language rich of geometric resonances, an "essence" which is common to situations most distant from each other, coming from one region or another of the vast universe of mathematical things". The aim of this book is to present a theory and a number of techniques which allow to give substance to Grothendieck's vision by building on the notion of classifying topos educed by categorical logicians. Mathematical theories (formalized within first-order logic) give rise to geometric objects called sites; the passage from sites to their associated toposes embodies the passage from the logical presentation of theories to their mathematical content, i.e. from syntax to semantics. The essential ambiguity given by the fact that any topos is associated in general with an infinite number of theories or different sites allows to study the relations between different theories, and hence the theories themselves, by using toposes as 'bridges' between these different presentations. The expression or calculation of invariants of toposes in terms of the theories associated with them or their sites of definition generates a great number of results and notions varying according to the different types of presentation, giving rise to a veritable mathematical morphogenesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of four contributions that are based on a series of lectures delivered by Jens Frehse. Konstantin Pikeckas, K.R. Rajagopal and Wolf von Wahl t the Fourth Winter School in Mathematical Theory in Fluid Mechanics, held in Paseky, Czech Republic, from December 3-9, 1995. In these papers the authors present the latest research and updated surveys of relevant topics in the various areas of theoretical fluid mechanics. Specifically, Frehse and Ruzicka study the question of the existence of a regular solution to Navier-Stokes equations in five dimensions by means of weighted estimates. Pileckas surveys recent results regarding the solvability of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes system in domains with outlets at infinity. K.R. Rajagopal presents an introduction to a continuum approach to mixture theory with the emphasis on the constitutive equation, boundary conditions and moving singular surface. Finally, Kaiser and von Wahl bring new results on stability of basic flow for the Taylor-Couette problem in the small-gap limit. This volume would be indicated for those in the fields of applied mathematicians, researchers in fluid mechanics and theoretical mechanics, and mechanical engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovering Evolution Equations with Applications: Volume 1-Deterministic Equations provides an engaging, accessible account of core theoretical results of evolution equations in a way that gradually builds intuition and culminates in exploring active research. It gives nonspecialists, even those with minimal prior exposure to analysis, the foundation to understand what evolution equations are and how to work with them in various areas of practice. After presenting the essentials of analysis, the book discusses homogenous finite-dimensional ordinary differential equations. Subsequent chapters then focus on linear homogenous abstract, nonhomogenous linear, semi-linear, functional, Sobolev-type, neutral, delay, and nonlinear evolution equations. The final two chapters explore research topics, including nonlocal evolution equations. For each class of equations, the author develops a core of theoretical results concerning the existence and uniqueness of solutions under various growth and compactness assumptions, continuous dependence upon initial data and parameters, convergence results regarding the initial data, and elementary stability results. By taking an applications-oriented approach, this self-contained, conversational-style book motivates readers to fully grasp the mathematical details of studying evolution equations. It prepares newcomers to successfully navigate further research in the field.

The achievements of other mathematicians are investigated for their present-day importance.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume explore the influence of the Russian school on the development of algebraic geometry and representation theory, particularly the pioneering work of two of its illustrious members, Alexander Beilinson and Victor Ginzburg, in celebration of their 60th birthdays. Based on the work of speakers and invited participants at the conference “Interactions Between Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry”, held at the University of Chicago, August 21-25, 2017, this volume illustrates the impact of their research and how it has shaped the development of various branches of mathematics through the use of D-modules, the affine Grassmannian, symplectic algebraic geometry, and other topics. All authors have been deeply influenced by their ideas and present here cutting-edge developments on modern topics. Chapters are organized around three distinct themes: Groups, algebras, categories, and representation theory D-modules and perverse sheaves Analogous varieties defined by quivers Representation Theory and Algebraic Geometry will be an ideal resource for researchers who work in the area, particularly those interested in exploring the impact of the Russian school.
