Book excerpt: During the last three decades of coral reefs studies, the large areal coverage of data derived from satellite images has increasingly been used to complement the more detailed but spatially limited data produced by conventional fieldwork. Continuous improvement in sensor capabilities, along with the development of increasingly refined methods for image processing, has lead to ever more accurate maps of physical and biological variables of importance to reef ecology. During the same period, an abundance of field studies have documented statistical relationships between aspects of the reef habitat and its fish community. Despite numerous stochastic influences, such as spatially concentrated and temporally variable fish recruitment pulses or the selective and patchy mortality caused by fishing, several aspects of habitat have been shown to significantly influence the fish community. Fortunately the most important of these, water depth, the structural complexity of the reef, and the cover of live coral, are possible to estimate from currently available satellite imagery. The research presented in the following pages has combined the statistical relationships between the fish community and its habitat with the capability of satellite imagery to map that habitat, thereby answering the research question: How can remote sensing be used to map coral reef fish communities? In the process, a set of new techniques for predictive modeling of complex relationships have been compared, the influence of a range of habitat variables on the fish community quantified, the spatial scales at which the fish-habitat relationships are strongest have been explored, and new methods for deriving estimates of some aspects of the coral reef habitat from satellite imagery have been developed. The results presented in this thesis thus contribute to the further understanding of fish-habitat relationships, while providing a template for producing spatially explicit predictive models of fish community variables. This is not only of scientific interest, but also of substantial value to the conservation community that tries to protect the world's remaining healthy coral reef ecosystems, and their fish communities, from an array of man-made influences.

Book excerpt: Testing ecological theory at macroecological scales may be useful for disentangling abiotic influences from anthropogenic disturbances, and thus provide insights into fundamental processes that structure ecological communities. In tropical coral reef systems, our understanding of community structure is limited to small-scale studies conducted in moderately degraded regions, while larger regional or ocean scale analyses have typically focused on identifying human drivers of reef degradation. In this thesis, my collaborators and I combined stable isotope specimens, underwater visual censuses, and remote sensing data from 43 Pacific islands and atolls in order to examine the relative roles of natural environmental variation and anthropogenic pressures in structuring coral reef fish and benthic communities. First, at unexploited sites on Kiritimati Atoll (Kiribati), isotope estimates indicated that trophic level increased with body size across species and individuals, while negative abundance ~ body size relationships (size spectra) revealed distinct energetic constraints between energy-competing carnivores and energy-sharing herbivores. After demonstrating size structuring of reef fish communities in the absence of humans, we then examined evidence for size-selective exploitation impacts on coral reefs across the Pacific Ocean. Size spectra 'steepened' as human population density increased and proximity to market center decreased, reflecting decreases in large-bodied fish abundance, biomass, turnover rate, and mean trophic level. Depletion of large fish abundances likely diminishes functions such as bioerosion by grazers and food chain connectivity by top predators, further degrading reef community resilience. Next, we considered the relative strengths of abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic influences in determining reef benthic state across spatial scales. We found that from fine (0.25 km2) to coarse (1,024 km2) grain scales the phase shift index (a multivariate metric of the relative cover of hard coral and macroalgal) was primarily predicted by local abiotic and bottom-up influences, such that coral-dominated reefs occurred in warm, productive regions at sites exposed to low wave energy, irrespective of grazing or human impacts. Our size-based analyses of reef fish communities revealed novel exploitation impacts at ocean-basin scales, and provide a foundation for delineating energetic pathways and feeding interactions in complex tropical food webs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that abiotic constraints underpin natural variation among fish and benthic communities of remote uninhabited reefs, emphasizing the importance of accounting for local environmental conditions when developing quantitative baselines for coral reef ecosystems.

Advances in field methods, spatial and spectral resolution of remote sensing data, and algorithm development have led to more detailed map categories and to heightened map accuracy. Studies have provided guidance for practitioners in areas such as imagery selection, algorithm application, and class selection methods, but the product has remained relatively unchanged - a habitat map showing the spatial distribution of a range of substrate classes, classified primarily on the basis of their spectral signature. However, the application of such a product in a management context has not been elaborated by the remote sensing community. The research described in this thesis addresses the challenge that the application of remotely-sensed coral reef information in a coral reef management environment elicits. In such an environment, the coral reef manager asks: "What can the map do to help me?", while the remote sensing scientist asks: "What type of information do you need?". The research described here aims to reconcile these two points of view, by answering the research question of this thesis: How can coral reef remotely-sensed information address stakeholder-specific coral reef management objectives? This question was answered through the development of a four-stage strategy. The strategy includes: 1) developing a traditional habitat map, 2) investigating stakeholder receptivity to the habitat map, 3) linking stakeholder interests with habitat data, and 4) illustrating the linked habitat data in what we term a management map. The strategy was applied on Bunaken Island, Indonesia, and involved the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data sets. The research was relevant to the communities on Bunaken Island, as they are directly responsible for the management of the coral reef resources surrounding Bunaken Island, and they are regularly planning and implementing coral reef management projects. The effectiveness of the four-stage strategy was evaluated in a framework that compares potential and actual uses of habitat maps and management maps in coral reef management projects. It was shown that management maps are superior to habitat maps for a wide range of management purposes. This research has provided two main contributions to the field of coral reef remote sensing and management. The first is the four-stage strategy that results in the development of management maps, and the second is the framework for evaluating the effectiveness of the management maps. This research seeks to traverse the gap between producers and users of coral reef remotely-sensed information. The recommendations made from this research addresses coral reef management procedures, action research, and cross-cultural communication. Each recommendation is founded on collaboration between scientist and manager. Such collaboration is crucial for successful application of remotely-sensed information to management.
