Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Along the Friendly Way: Reminiscences and Impressions But there is no uncertainty about the backward view. It is all agleam with the things which that same Hand once dropped about me. From what I know I can trust the still unknown. In spite of sorrows, bewilderments, mistakes - and worse, I am so far along. The retrospect of life is a happy pastime, - that is, when I am wise enough to forget some things. Why should I not forget them, since the good book assures me that He no longer remem bers them against me? If it gives an Old man pleasure to think over the past, it may be profitable to others who are coming the same way that he should talk out loud what he thinks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions and Reminiscences I acknowledge that, every evening, I am simple enough to record, in more or less words, the events of the day; and this I have done for twenty years. It does not follow, however, that this journal merits publication; and I doubt if even a few Of its pages would be worth the trouble. On reviewing it, I am convinced that it would be principally interesting to myself, resembling, as it does, a journal from shipboard; for we live, for the most part, in the country; and this life is similar to that on a ship that is lying-to. Book Synopsis Recollections and Impressions (Classic Reprint) by : E. M. Sellar
Download or read book Recollections and Impressions (Classic Reprint) written by E. M. Sellar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Impressions IN giving these Recollections and Impressions to the public, I feel some sort of explanation is due, - and the explanation is, that they were written at long intervals during the last four or five years, entirely for my grandchildren, and are therefore of a more domestic character than if a larger audience had been anticipated. I have never kept a diary, and am conscious that what I have written is often very desultory, and at all times it is difficult to keep reminiscences from being a dry catalogue of names. Had I even suppressed the personal note, the sketches of well-known people who came into our life might appear too like detached portraits, lacking a frame. Such as they are, I shall feel grate ful and pleased if my readers find some little interest in any of them. If they fail to attract. Book Synopsis An Artist's Reminiscences by : Walter Crane
Download or read book An Artist's Reminiscences written by Walter Crane and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Artist's Reminiscences When Messrs. Methuen suggested to me that I might write my Reminiscences I was quite taken by surprise. In the midst of a busy life one does not think of such things, or if a thought of the possibility of recording ones personal happenings does occur, it is probably consigned to some dreamed-of tranquil time in days of retirement. However, when a man begins to say "I remember," it is a sign that he has mental records of a different world from the present, and probably of actors long passed from the worlds stage. In these revolutionary times, when changes are so rapid, it needs no great pretensions to fulness of years to have witnessed extraordinary transformations in the outward aspects of life, in manners and customs, in dress, as well as in mental attitude. A comparatively short life would be sufficient in which to have observed most extraordinary changes in the aspects of London, for instance. Twenty or thirty years ago, measured by the changes which have taken place, might well be centuries, and this would also hold good of the less obvious and less noted, perhaps, shifting of intellectual focus, to say nothing of political and social change. The main interest of reminiscences lies, however, I presume, in the direct personal impressions a writer may be able to give of eminent persons he has met, or of scenes and movements of which he has been a witness or in which he has taken part. As the years roll by, and new generations arise who only know the names of certain distinguished men and women, or are acquainted with them only through their works or their fame - poets, savants, artists, statesmen - first-hand information or fresh personal impressions are apt to acquire an unusual interest.
