These stories, first appeared in the “Queeslander” in the form of articles, many of which referred to the Aboriginal People. These articles were then recorded and published by his daughter, Constance Campbell Petrie, in 1904. This book also provides a brief sketch of the early days of the colony of Queensland from 1837, through the eyes of Tom Petrie. He was considered an authority on the Aboriginal people and in this book there is a wide range of interesting and important information about them, including some vocabulary words.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Queensland: 1862-1899 The reasons for this book are as follows: - Whilst talking over early days with Mr.Courtenay-Luck, the popular Secretary of the Commercial Travellers' Club, that gentleman suggested that I should write a paper, to be read at a meeting of the Historical Society of Queensland. In writing that paper, so many long-forgotten men, places and incidents came back to memory that I thought my reminiscences might prove interesting to others. I may be occasionally incorrect in dates, or in the sequence of events, but I relate facts and personal experiences. As they are, I leave them to the kind consideration of readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Henry Corfield (1843-1927) was a carrier, publican, storekeeper and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Deciding there was more money to be made servicing the goldfields than mining them, Corfield established a carrying business in about 1868. Using bullock teams, he transported goods from the coastal ports to the various Queensland goldfields. In 1878, he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Robert Fitzmaurice, to set up businesses in the new town of Winton in Western Queensland. They established the North Gregory Hotel and the Corfield and Fitzmaurice Store. When Fitzmaurice lost his sight in 1884 Corfield bought out his shares in the businesses, and then sold the hotel but retained the store in partnership with W. M. Campbell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Patterson looks back at his life growing up in suburban Brisbane and his career as a civil engineer in this memoir. Born during World War II, he grew up in a rented house in Doomben a short distance from the southern end of Brisbane’s main Eagle Farm Aerodrome—not a particularly safe place to live during wartime. Many family members and friends used their home as a staging post on their way north to war. His family life was sometimes odd, with his father always urging him to do well in school—or else he would turn him and his brother, Gavin, into “bloody little Bank Johnnies.” He said it in such a disparaging way that it sounded like this would be the worst punishment they could possibly suffer. He also recalls his array of experiences as a civil engineer working in Queensland and other projects throughout the world. Join the author as he shares a firsthand account of growing up in Queensland, his passion for sailing and flying, and his fascinating life as an engineer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first European chroniclers of Indigenous Culture in Australia looked for the sensational, often neglecting its more significant features. In his fourth book on Queensland’s early history, J. G. Steele corrects this imbalance with a detailed account of the Indigenous people of the subtropical coast at the time of their earliest contact with white settlers. The region described is centred on Brisbane, extending along the coast to Fraser Island, to Evens Head in New South Wales, and inland to the Great Dividing Range. Drawing on early accounts, photographs, place-names, languages, legends, archeology, and museum collections, Aboriginal Pathways provides a wealth of fascinating and important material, much of it relevant to debates on Indigenous land rights and sacred sites of the 1980s.
