Book excerpt: Evidence from several disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, demography, history, and the Maori oral tradition, are combined in this analysis of the many volcanic periods that shaped New Zealand. This authoritative, groundbreaking study examines the consequences on the coastal landscape and its people, from the first Polynesian settlers until European colonization in the 18th century. A study of the wave of tsunamis that struck New Zealand in the 15th century, known as the &“big crunch,&” and precipitated various crises that led to cultural change and much warfare is also included.

Book excerpt: One afternoon in Auckland, journalist Hazel Phillips decided to close her laptop and head for the hills. She then spent the next three years living in mountain huts and tramping alone for days at a time, all the while holding down a full-time job.As she ranged from Arthur's Pass and the Kaimanawa Forest Park to the Ruahine Range and Fiordland, she had her share of danger and loneliness, but she also grew in confidence and backcountry knowledge. Her story of this solo life is an absorbing blend of adventure and humour, combined with her research into tales from the past of ambition and death in the mountains. She also casts a feminist eye over the challenges women climbers and explorers faced.Full of pluck, courage and resourcefulness, this book is for all those who long to wade through emerald rivers and breathe the mountain air.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many ways, this book is the culmination of more than four decades of my exp- ration of the taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of New Zealand’s quite small freshwater fish fauna. I began this firstly as a fisheries ecologist with the New Zealand Marine Department (then responsible for the nation’s fisheries research and mana- ment), and then with my PhD at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA in the early–mid 1960s. Since then, employed by a series of agencies that have successively been assigned a role in fisheries research in New Zealand, I have been able to explore very widely the natural history of that fauna. Studies of the fishes of other warm to cold temperate southern lands have followed, particularly southern Australia, New Caledonia, Patagonian South America, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa and, in many ways, have provided the rather broader context within which the New Zealand fauna is embedded in terms of geography, phylogeny, and evolutionary history, and knowing this context makes the patterns within New Zealand all the clearer. An additional stream in these studies, in substantial measure driven by the beh- ioural ecology of these fishes round the Southern Hemisphere, has been exploration of the role of diadromy (regular migrations between marine and freshwater biomes) in fisheries ecology and biogeography, and eventually of diadromous fishes wor- wide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two hundred years ago, Maori in the south of New Zealand had a lifestyle quite distinct from their northern cousins, and different experiences of contact with Europeans. This book provides an insight into those times, covering the period 1650-1850, and focusing on Maori history from Marlborough to Stewart Island. Atholl Anderson surveys the origins and migrations of Waitaha and Kati Mamoe, and the subsequent arrival of Ngai Tahu and the establishment of their tribal authority and lifeways in the South Island. Drawing on tribal knowledge as well as early written accounts, he creates the fullest description yet of Maori in this period.

Book excerpt: "The land surveyors stood at a particular point in New Zealand's colonisation, implementing its principles on the ground and acting as mediators between cultures. For the Crown surveying was an essential part of the process of converting Maori customary tenure into Crown-derived grants. It was a means by which the British began to make the country their own."--BOOK JACKET.
