Book excerpt: Through a series of fascinating vignettes from local storyteller Susannah Brody, discover how the people of Chester County affected and were affected by American history. When Elizabeth Chad opened her door one foggy September day in 1777 to see the Continental army surrounding her property, little did she know that her home would soon be the scene of the Battle of the Brandywine, which led to a series of skirmishes from Paoli to Valley Forge. One hundred years later, the Great Tornado of 1877 destroyed towns and crops, and the famous Buffalo Bill caused a ruckus when he strolled into West Chester. Discover how the people of Chester County secreted slaves along the Underground Railroad, hosted witch trials and fought for women's suffrage.

Book excerpt: A classic oral history of the American Revolution, The Revolution Remembered uses 79 first-hand accounts from veterans of the war to provide the reader with the feel of what it must have been like to fight and live through America's bloody battle for independence. "In a book fairly bursting with feats of daring, perhaps the most spectacular accomplishment of them all is this volume's transformation of its readers into the grandchildren of Revolutionary War soldiers. . . . An amazing gathering of 79 surrogate Yankee grandparents who tell us in their own words what they saw with their own eyes."—Elaine F. Weiss, Christian Science Monitor "Fascinating. . . . [The soldiers'] details fill in significant shadows of history."—Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun-Times "It's still good fun two centuries later, overhearing these experiences of the tumult of everyday life and seeing a front-lines view of one of the most unusual armies ever to fight, let alone win."—Richard Martin, Wall Street Journal "One of the most important primary source discoveries from the era. A unique and fresh perspective."—Paul G. Levine, Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: William Arthur Tunstall, born in 1710 in Pennsylvania of Quaker parents, migrates to the Carolina Colony at age 23 to become an Indian Trader. He is successful in that endeavor and becomes a translator for the tribe, marrying the Chief’s daughter and beginning a family. He begins buying land in the vicinity of Charleston and is told by the Chief, “the land is a gift from God never to be sold or traded.” This promise follows him through seven generations; for over forty years he continues to add land until he has eight thousand acres that can't be sold or traded. Each generation passes the torch to the next generation until the present. Now the last Tunstall is 87 years of age with no one left to pass the farm onto. Now George Aaron Tunstall asks, “Old Will Tunstall, what would you have me do?” About the Author Howard P. White is an architect, commercial instrument-rated pilot with two self-published books. He has a wife, one daughter, two sons, one grandson, and two granddaughters.

Book excerpt: With a template that fits every American community, Remembered focuses on ninety-nine former students from a typical Middle America high school. Each student gave their lives in the line of duty during World War II. The ninety-nine names are dutifully bronzed on a plaque visible to current students on a daily basis, but Remembered goes beyond names. It adds life, zeal, and excitement to each name. Remembered poignantly points out that those lives were cut short in their prime. By remembering their stories, the freedoms they paid forward were not in vain.

Book excerpt: The Alsatian Bieber/Beaver clan has contributed significantly to the creation and leadership of over sixty educational and Mainline Protestant institutions in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, the Midwest, and beyond - many of which continue to serve their communities, generation after generation. Past publications have mentioned individual Bieber/Beaver ministers and educators, but this is the first effort to compile their stories collectively, from the 1700’s to the present. This work recognizes such leaders’ roles in building and sustaining churches and schools, the community centers of early America. Book excerpt: An accessible basic text written in today’s language for anyone guided by the Twelve Steps in their recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. For decades people from all over the world have found freedom from addiction—be it to alcohol, other drugs, gambling, or overeating — using the Twelve-Step recovery program first set forth in the seminal book Alcoholics Anonymous. Although the core principles and practices of this invaluable guide hold strong today, addiction science and societal norms have changed dramatically since it was first published in 1939. Recovery Now combines the most current research with the timeless wisdom of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and other established Twelve-Step program guides to offer an accessible basic text written in today’s language for anyone recovering from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Marvin D. Seppala, M.D., offers a “doctor’s opinion” in the foreword to Recovery Now, outlining the medical advances in addiction treatment, and updating the Big Book’s concept of addiction as an allergy to reveal how it is actually a brain disease. Regardless of gender, sexual orientation, culture, age, or religious beliefs, this book can serve either as your guide for recovery, or as a companion and portal to the textbook of your chosen Twelve-Step Program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned literary coterie in eighteenth-century Philadelphia—Elizabeth Fergusson, Hannah Griffitts, Deborah Logan, Annis Stockton, and Susanna Wright—wrote and exchanged thousands of poems and maintained elaborate handwritten commonplace books of memorabilia. Through their creativity and celebrated hospitality, they initiated a salon culture in their great country houses in the Delaware Valley. In this stunningly original and heavily illustrated book, Susan M. Stabile shows that these female writers sought to memorialize their lives and aesthetic experience—a purpose that stands in marked contrast to the civic concerns of male authors in the republican era. Drawing equally on material culture and literary history, Stabile discusses how the group used their writings to explore and at times replicate the arrangement of their material possessions, including desks, writing paraphernalia, mirrors, miniatures, beds, and coffins. As she reconstructs the poetics of memory that informed the women's lives and structured their manuscripts, Stabile focuses on vernacular architecture, penmanship, souvenir collecting, and mourning. Empirically rich and nuanced in its readings of different kinds of artifacts, this engaging work tells of the erasure of the women's lives from the national memory as the feminine aesthetic of scribal publication was overshadowed by the proliferating print culture of late eighteenth-century America.
