Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Rudin's memoirs should prove to be a delightful read specifically to mathematicians, but also to historians who are interested in learning abou his colourful history and ancestry. Characterized by his personal style of elegance, clarity, and brevity, Rudin presents in the first part of the book his early memories about his family history, his boyhood in Vienna throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and his experiences during World War II. Part II offers samples of his work, in which he relates where problems came from, what their solutions led to, and who else was involved. As those who are familiar with Rudin's writing will recognize, he brings to this book the same care, depth, and originality that is the hallmark of his work. Book excerpt: “Fascinating and useful . . . The distinguished memory researcher Scott A. Small explains why forgetfulness is not only normal but also beneficial.”—Walter Isaacson, bestselling author of The Code Breaker and Leonardo da Vinci Who wouldn’t want a better memory? Dr. Scott Small has dedicated his career to understanding why memory forsakes us. As director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University, he focuses largely on patients who experience pathological forgetting, and it is in contrast to their suffering that normal forgetting, which we experience every day, appears in sharp relief. Until recently, most everyone—memory scientists included—believed that forgetting served no purpose. But new research in psychology, neurobiology, medicine, and computer science tells a different story. Forgetting is not a failure of our minds. It’s not even a benign glitch. It is, in fact, good for us—and, alongside memory, it is a required function for our minds to work best. Forgetting benefits our cognitive and creative abilities, emotional well-being, and even our personal and societal health. As frustrating as a typical lapse can be, it’s precisely what opens up our minds to making better decisions, experiencing joy and relationships, and flourishing artistically. From studies of bonobos in the wild to visits with the iconic painter Jasper Johns and the renowned decision-making expert Daniel Kahneman, Small looks across disciplines to put new scientific findings into illuminating context while also revealing groundbreaking developments about Alzheimer’s disease. The next time you forget where you left your keys, remember that a little forgetting does a lot of good.

So he decided to write a book that is approachable and fun, centered on what people actually need to remember. In Remember It!, Dellis teaches us how to make the most of our memory, using his competition-winning techniques. Presenting the information in a user-friendly way, Dellis offers bite-size chapters, addressing things we wish we could remember but often forget: names, grocery lists, phone numbers, where you left your keys—you name it! This fast-paced, highly illustrated tour of the inner workings of the brain makes improving your memory simple and fun.

Book excerpt: This is a story of my life as I remember it, beginning in the Summer Lake Valley in the year of 1916. Most families in the early 1900’s didn’t have much and didn’t expect much. Even after my folks were able to buy the farm in Summer Lake Valley it was “nip and tuck”, you might say, to survive and to keep up the payments. Even after I got married in 1944 our life wasn’t easy. Wages were low, even after World War II. I could have gone to college under the G.I. bill since I had been in the Navy, but I was more interested in buying a farm and raising cattle and sheep. Most ranchers were having to go see the banker every year to borrow operating money so farms were not really a very good investment. Still, I think that when we were able to buy our little ten-acre farm it became the highlight of our family’s life. I enjoyed the fishing and deer hunting in Lake County, and took good advantage of it while we were there. That was all fun at the time, but now that the retirement years are here it has to be okay. I will always remember the days on the little farm and raising a family as being my best days.

Sample Book Insights: #1 We’ve all grown accustomed to the frustration of memory lapses, and the little things we do to get by in spite of them. We often forget what we want to remember, and we never forget what changes our lives. #2 I had always been interested in numbers, and I thought that being able to calculate in my head would make me a little sharper in my field. I found the Extreme Mental Calculation World Cup, where the best head-mathletes flex their brains by incorporating memorization techniques in their calculations. #3 The best way to remember anything is to turn it into a mental image. When I first learned this, I was so fascinated that I didn’t care about how to apply the techniques in my everyday life. #4 The best part of success is the opportunity it affords me to talk about memory to new people all the time. I’m proud of my accomplishments, but the best part of success is the opportunity it affords me to show people how easy, fun, and life-changing it is to learn these techniques and put them to use.

Book excerpt: Taken from her Native birth mother as a baby. Removed from her adoptive parents' home at 5 and caught shoplifting at 11. On the streets prostituting herself at 14. This is the stark childhood and adolescence of Tara Lee, the protagonist of As I Remember It. But she triumphs over rejection and abuse, thanks to her indomitable spirit and the efforts of a pair of unique foster parents. Breakdowns in the fostering system make the headlines, but what is day-to-day life really like for foster children and teens? What struggles do they face, and what resources do they draw on? Why are kids in care more liable to get involved in crime? As I Remember It yields first-person insight into these issues, but beyond that, it will draw you in with its unblinking portrait of a young girl who discovers that she possesses a core of strength equal to that of her storybook heroines.
