Book Synopsis The Rise of the Cult of Rembrandt by : Alison McQueen
Download or read book The Rise of the Cult of Rembrandt written by Alison McQueen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rembrandt's life and art had an almost mythic resonance in nineteenth-century France with artists, critics, and collectors alike using his artistic persona both as a benchmark and as justification for their own goals. This first in-depth study of the traditional critical reception of Rembrandt reveals the preoccupation with his perceived "authenticity," "naturalism," and "naiveté," demonstrating how the artist became an ancestral figure, a talisman with whom others aligned themselves to increase the value of their own work. And in a concluding chapter, the author looks at the playRembrandt, staged in Paris in 1898, whose production and advertising are a testament to the enduring power of the artist's myth.

Download or read book Largesse written by Jean Starobinski and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997-06-23 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990 the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre made their holdings available to guest curators for a program called Parti Pris, or "Taking Sides". In this program, major cultural figures outside of the discipline of art history organized exhibitions based on the department's collection. Within its first several years, this novel collaboration produced exhibitions curated by philosopher Jacques Derrida and filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Jean Starobinski, noted literary critic and intellectual historian from the University of Geneva, was selected as the third curator in the program. In his exhibition and accompanying essay, Starobinski explores the theme of largesse in its broadest sense. Arguing that gift giving and receiving are fundamental human gestures, he examines graphic and textual representations from the offering of the apple to Eve to Salome's gift of the head of John the Baptist, from the giving of laws to the gift of death. Charity, the poetic gift, and the benefits of Fortune all play a role in Starobinski's extended meditation on the act of donation. Lavishly illustrated and dazzling in its scope and imagination, Largesse is an exemplar of the rich intellectual work that can result from crossing disciplinary boundaries and considering history as a dense network of themes and allusions.

Book Synopsis How to Find Out About the Arts by : Neville Carrick
Download or read book How to Find Out About the Arts written by Neville Carrick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Find Out About the Arts: A Guide to Sources of Information discusses the main sources of information, printed or otherwise, in the field of the arts. The book begins by describing where information on art careers can be found. Separate chapters then discuss how information on art can be traced in libraries by means of the catalogue and classification scheme; and turning to bibliographies when information on a particular aspect of art cannot be traced by these means. Subsequent chapters deal with sources such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, general indexes to reproductions and portraits, works on iconography, periodicals, directories, yearbooks, and sales records. This book aims to serve some of the needs of the student of art, the experienced artist, and indeed all of those with an intelligent interest in the arts. In particular, it should help those in libraries, colleges, and other educational institutions whose task it is to guide others to the right sources.
