Nicholaus, and in one of the Evidences both S. Mary and S. Edmund, the Benefaction being made to S. Mary, S. Nicholaus andS. Edmund of Sandford; not that this Chapell was dedicated to three different S, but because perhaps there were three different Churches or Chapells that had all a share in the Gift. I do not indeed remember to have read of the Places in -wthese three distinct Chapells stood, excepting this of S.Nicholas, yet the mention of them.in the Evidence shews there was such a thing, and in a Book written in the time of King 10 Edward the I. I have read of Chapells in this Part of the County, that are since destroy'd. Of what Bigness and Form the Chapell was at first we are not told; but from some Circumstances in the Monasticon we may gather that 'twas neither large nor beautifull. Which was one reason that in the time of King Henry the 3 .the Nunns took care to have it rebuilt and inlarg'd to a decent, comely, and lightsome Fabrick; in carrying on of w 5 they had several very generous Benefactors. Nor was Pope Innocent the IV. at all backward in forwarding and encouraging so excellent and worthy a Design. For he issu'd a Bull to the Diocesses of Lincoln, Ely and Sarum by virtue of which he took off the Space of ten days Penitence from all such as should be pleas'd to become Benefactors to this new Work. Without all doubt it had its intended Effect, and it may be more Money was raised than was sufficient for defraying the whole Expense, and a good Summ reserv'd for other Uses. This Method of raising Money by Bull was common, as we may see in great Numbers of them in the Monasticon. This New Chapell was situated in the same Place where the old oe was, namely on the South side of the Nunnery. The Ruins of it remain to this Day, being turned into a Barn for the use of the Farmer who rents the adjoyning Estate of M. Powell the 30 present Proprietor, an honest, religious Roman Catholick. This is one of those small Houses that by Virtue of the Popes Bull were dissolv'd for the Use of Cardinal Wolsey, who imploy'd the Revenues upon his magnificent College building at Oxford. As the Chapell is now standing, so also is the Nunnery it self, at least a very great Part of it, with several of the Out-Houses, and it seems to have been a House altogether agreeable to the Beauty of those times. 'Tis uncertain whether they buried in the Chapell or no, or whether there was any particular Cemitery annex'd to it for that purpose. We hear of no Reliques of Bodies found here, nor anything else to satisfy us in such an Inquiry.40 'Tis likely the Bodies were buried in the Church and Church-Yard of Sandford adjoyning, Church perhaps at that time was much larger than 'tis at present, and the Yard or Cemitery in all probability was then better distinguished from the other unconsecrated Ground than 'tis at present. But whatever the Church of Sandford was then 'tis plain from the Inscription over the Porch-Door that it afterwards received a considerable Benefaction from a Religious, devout lady, M. Elizabeth Isham, who inepaird it when twas almost quite decay'd and ready to fall down. As there are no Relicks of Bodies found here to resolve us in the Point of Burial, so are there no other Remains of Antiquity besides the bare 50 House to gratify our Curiosity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks and Collections of Thomas Hearne, Vol. 1: Suum Ruique, July 4, 1705 March 19, 1707 It is built a tardy act of reparation to a scholar who was meglected during life, and has been imperfectly appreciated in the century and a half which has elasped since his death, for an Oxford Historical Society to select as one of its earliest issues a portion of the writings of Thomas Hearne. We should have to go very far back, and to come down to our own day, in order to find many names worthy to be placed beside his on the roll of Oxford alumni who have done distinguished service to the cause of historical research. To supersede those numerous editions of the sources of English history which Hearne gave to the world in a too brief lifetime of fifty-seven years, the resources of the Treasury, with a large staff of learned specialists at its disposal, have been employed for a generation past. Hearne's Remarks and CoUeciionSy of which the first instalment is now before us, contain fragments of the materials of which he afterwards made such excellent use, beside memoranda on any subject that attracted his attention at the moment It may be readily conceded that the words of Bentley - surely as magnificent a eulogy as was ever pronounced on one scholar by another - are not in their full sense applicable to our antiquary: -The very dust of his writings is gold. But we certainly claim that with the dust very much gold is mingled That delightful book Reliquiae Hearnianae, originally printed in a small edition by Dr. Philip Bliss (Oxford, a vols. 8 vo., 1857), and afterwards published with additional matter in 3 vols. (London, 1869), hardly professes to contain more than a series of illustrative selections. It may safely be said that until these Diaries of Hearne's (to give them a title which he himself rejected), together with his extensive Correspondence, are rendered accessible to students in a more complete form than hitherto, the history of the Nonjurors, and that of the Universities in the earlier portion of the eighteenth century, cannot be finally written. And if it be objected that the history of the Nonjurors is of purely antiquarian interest, we need only point to the numerous questions concerning the relations between the ecclesiastical and civil power which agitate mens minds at the present day, and which Sancroft and Kettle well, Dodwell and Hickes, Collier and Ken, had thought out and illustrated with various learning, nearly two centuries ago. When, to the sincere regret of all lovers of scholarship, Mr. Doble unwillingly relinquished the task of editing Hearne's Remarks and Collections, he made over to me a series of transcripts, of which the first represented vol. xli of the original MS. and the last vol. li - the volume containing the notice of the death of Queen Anne. Certain of the intervening volumes, viz. vols. xlv, xlvi, and xlvii, were not transcribed; and transcripts of these volumes were subsequently made under my direction. The mere record of transcription, however, does not exhaust the subject of divided responsibility. The principle on which Hearne's work has been edited is clearly expressed in the preface to the first volume, where Mr. Doble says: 'I have sought to include all the matter of the original which seemed to me in any way interesting, and to summarize what was not worth printing in full.' In other words, the principle has been one of selection; and wherever there is selection there is a wide field for the exercise of editorial judgement. From the very first, Mr. Doble was good enough to invite my reconsideration of his selection; but it will be readily understood with how much diffidence an inexperienced editor, following one so distinguished, draws his pen through pages which have been laboriously transcribed, even when frankly invited to do so, if he thinks fit. In the course of looking through Mr. Doble's transcripts, as well as in giving directions for my own, it certainly seemed to me that there was a good deal which was not 'in any way interesting, ' and was, therefore, not worth publishing.
