Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poetry: Chiefly on Subjects Connected With Religion I on his oath depend, I shall, on eagle's wings upborne, To heaven ascend; I shall behold his face, I shall his power adore, And sing the wonders of his grace For evermore. Though nature's strength decay, And earth and hell withstand, To Canaan's bounds I urge my way, At His command: The waters deep I pass, With Jesus in my view; And, through the howling wilderness, My way pursue. Book Synopsis Religion as Poetry by : Andrew M. Greeley
Download or read book Religion as Poetry written by Andrew M. Greeley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion as Poetry continues in the grand tradition of the sociology of religion pioneered by Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Talcott Parsons, among other giants in intellectual history. Too many present-day sociologists either ignore or disparage religious currents. In this provocative book, Andrew M. Greeley argues that various religions have endured for thousands of years as poetic rituals and stories. Religion as Poetry proposes a theoretical framework for understanding religion that emphasizes insights derived from religious stories. By virtue of his own rare abilities as a novelist as well as sociologist, Greeley is uniquely qualified for this task.Greeley first considers classical theories of the sociology of religion, and then, drawing upon them, he explicates his own interpretation. He critically examines the viewpoint that society is becoming more secular, and that religion is declining. He observes that this theory stands in the way of persuading sociologists that religion is still worth studying. In contrast, Greeley is interested in why religions persist despite secular trends and alongside them. He argues that it is poetic elements that touch the human soul. Greeley then sets out to test this viewpoint.Greeley maintains that his theory is not the only, or necessarily even the best approach to study religion. Rather, it is his contention that it uniquely provides sociologists with perspectives on religion that other theories too often overlook or disregard. Religion as Poetry, an original and intriguing study by a distinguished social scientist and major novelist, will be enjoyed and evaluated by sociologists, ' theologians, and philosophers alike.
Download or read book Banners of Longing written by Ed Block and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banners of Longing is a collection of sixty-four reflective and religious poems divided into four categories: Seasons, Sinners, Personae, and Meditations. These poems will move, console, inspire, and enlighten the reader prepared to appreciate religious and reflective verse. The poems in this collection examine everyday experiences, events, and perceptions in the light of faith. They also look—sometimes with wry humor—at familiar biblical characters in a twenty-first-century light. The collection as a whole presents a spirituality of presence, gratitude, and graceful living in the world. Including selected poems from the author’s earlier collection, Anno Domini, Banners of Longing acknowledges its many debts to such religious poets as Gerard Manley Hopkins, Mary Oliver, Denise Levertov, and Dana Gioia. The spiritual influence of contemporary theologian Elizabeth Johnson and the late Cistercian monk and spiritual writer, Thomas Merton, are also unmistakable. Many of these poems first appeared in such distinguished journals as Spiritus, Parabola, and the famed Jesuit journal, Review for Religious.

Download or read book New Selected Poems written by Les Murray and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh selection of the finest poems—some previously uncollected—by one of our finest English-language poets Why write poetry? For the weird unemployment. For the painless headaches, that must be tapped to strike down along your writing arm at the accumulated moment. For the adjustments after, aligning facets in a verb before the trance leaves you. For working always beyond your own intelligence. —from "The Instrument" New Selected Poems contains Les Murray's own gathering from the full range of his poetry—from the 1960s through Taller When Prone (2004) and including previously uncollected work. One of the finest poets writing today, Murray reinvents himself with each new collection. Whether writing about the indignities of childhood or the depths of depression, or evoking the rhythms of the natural world; whether writing in a sharply rendered Australian vernacular or a perfectly pitched King's English, his versatility and vitality are a constant. New Selected Poems is the poet's choice of his essential works: an indispensable collection for readers who already love his poetry, and an ideal introduction for those who are new to it.
