Book excerpt: The deuteron form factor is calculated in a one-pionexchange (OPE) approximation using single-variable unsubtracted dispersion relations in the squared-momentum-transfer variable. As a first step, the imaginary parts of the form factors are presented in terms of the four invariants of the deuteron-nucleon (d-N) vertex. The resulting equations are compared in detail with similar expressions obtained from the Jankus potential theory, and a clear understanding of the precise way in which the d-N invariants play the role of the deuteron wave function emerges, enabling us to obtain relativistic wave functions. This comparison also shows the presence of new relativistic terms not included in the Jankus results (in particular, a new term appears in the magnetic moment). Then, the imaginary parts of the d-N vertex invariants are calculated numerically. In this calculation the OPE contribution in its anamalous region is calculated exactly, while the contributions above the normal threshold are obtained by an educated guess based on sum rules which the invariants are assumed to satisfy. Finally, using these results, the form factors are calculated numerically. With the assumption of unsubtracted dispersion relations, it is necessary to assume only the charge and mass of the deuteron, and the pion-nucleon coupling constant, in order to completely determine the form factors. The numerical results for the magnetic and quadrupole moments agree with experiment to within 2%; the D-state probability if 5.5% but is not very reliably determined, and the other results, while less good, are still quite reasonable. The range of interest of the articles extends from the nature of the substructure of the nucleon and the deuteron to the general properties of the nucleus, including its phase transitions and its rich and unexpected quantal properties. The first article by Fillipone and Ji reviews the present experimental and theoretical situation pertaining to our knowledge of the origin of the spin of the nucleon. Until about 20 years ago the half-integral spin of the neutron and p- ton was regarded as their intrinsic property as Dirac particles which were the basic building blocks of atomic nuclei. Then, with the advent of the Standard Model and of quarks as the basic building blocks, the substructure of the - cleon became the subject of intense interest. Initial nonrelativistic quark m- els assigned the origin of nucleon spin to the fundamental half-integral spin of its three constituent quarks, leaving no room for contributions to the spin from the gluons associated with the interacting quarks or from the orbital angular momentum of either gluons or quarks. That naive understanding was shaken, about fifteen years ago, by experiments involving deep-inelastic scattering of electrons or muons from nucleons.

The core of the organizing committee was nevertheless located at the Institut des Sciences Nucleaires, whose physicists, especially in the group of theoretical physics, have a long tradition in the domain. The Few Body Conference has a natural tendency to be a theoretical one - the exchange about the methods used in different fields is the common point to most participants. It also has a tendency to be a hadronic physics one - the corresponding physics community, perhaps due to the existence of experimen tal facilities devoted to the study of few body systems, is better organized. In preparing the scientific program, we largely relied on the advices of the Inter national Advisory Committee, while avoiding to follow these trends too closely.
