Book excerpt: In an attempt to clarify the reactions of ferrous sulfate and titanous sulfate with hydrogen peroxide, a novel method has been developed to determine the relative rate constants for reactions of the oxidizing species generated in these systems. These species react with hydrogen peroxide to give perhydroxyl radicals which combine with titanium(IV) ions to form the relatively stable TiOO.(3+) radical. This radical gives a strong electron spin resonance signal and the competition between hydrogen peroxide and a scavenger for the oxidizing species can be followed by measuring the amplitude of this signal in the presence of various concentrations of scavenger. The relative rate constants calculated in this way for both the Fe(II)-H2)2 and Ti(III)-H2O2 systems at pH 1.0 agree with those reported for the reactions of hydroxyl radicals in gamma-irradiated thymine solutions. This supports the view that hydroxyl radicals are formed in these cases. Scavengers investigated were thymine, methanol, ethanol, formic acid, acetic acid, chloride ion, and several amino acids. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) rely on the efficient generation of reactive radical species and are increasingly attractive options for water remediation from a wide variety of organic micropollutants of human health and/or environmental concern. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment covers the key advanced oxidation processes developed for chemical contaminant destruction in polluted water sources, some of which have been implemented successfully at water treatment plants around the world. The book is structured in two sections; the first part is dedicated to the most relevant AOPs, whereas the topics covered in the second section include the photochemistry of chemical contaminants in the aquatic environment, advanced water treatment for water reuse, implementation of advanced treatment processes for drinking water production at a state-of-the art water treatment plant in Europe, advanced treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater, and green technologies for water remediation. The advanced oxidation processes discussed in the book cover the following aspects: - Process principles including the most recent scientific findings and interpretation. - Classes of compounds suitable to AOP treatment and examples of reaction mechanisms. - Chemical and photochemical degradation kinetics and modelling. - Water quality impact on process performance and practical considerations on process parameter selection criteria. - Process limitations and byproduct formation and strategies to mitigate any potential adverse effects on the treated water quality. - AOP equipment design and economics considerations. - Research studies and outcomes. - Case studies relevant to process implementation to water treatment. - Commercial applications. - Future research needs. Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment presents the most recent scientific and technological achievements in process understanding and implementation, and addresses to anyone interested in water remediation, including water industry professionals, consulting engineers, regulators, academics, students. Book excerpt: Textile industry wastewater contains toxic dyes as well as heavy metals and many other persistent organic compounds which are difficult to biodegrade using conventional biological methods. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are one of the best alternatives for the effective degradation of such compounds. This Volume 2 starts with homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton processes and reviews the application and variables that affect the process. It then discusses plasma technology- an emerging method in terms of its chemistry, treatment set-up, limitations, etc. The positive performance of carbon tetrachloride in process intensification of dye degradation is presented. The other chapters include topics such as sonoenzymatic treatment processes, electroflocculation versus textile wastewater, combination of photocatalysis and membrane Separation, and enhancement of anaerobic digestion and photodegradation through adsorption.

Book excerpt: The relative rate technique has been used to measure the hydroxyl radical (OH) reaction rate constant to +2-butanol (2BU, CH3CH2CHOHch3 and 2-pentanol (2PE, CH3CH2CH2CHOHch3. 2BU and 2PE react with OH yielding bimolecular rate constants of (8.1 +/- 2.0) x 10(exp -12 cm3/molecule/s and (11.9 +/- 3.0) x 10(exp-12) cm3/molecule/s, respectively, at 297 +/- 3 K and 1 atmosphere total pressure. Both 2BU and 2PE OH rate constants reported here are in agreement with previously reported values. In order to more clearly define these alcohols' atmospheric reaction mechanisms, an investigation into the OH + alcohol reaction products was also conducted. The OH + 2BU reaction products and yields observed were: methyl ethyl ketone (MEK, 60 +/- 2%, CH3CH2C(=O)CH3 and acetaldehyde (29 +/- 4%, HC(=O)CH3. The OH + 2PE reaction products and yields observed were: 2-pentanone (2PO, 4 +/- 4%, CH3C(=O)CH2CH2CH3, propionaldehyde (14 +/- 2%, HC(=O)CH2CH3, and acetaldehyde 40 +/- 4%, HC(=O)CH3. The alcohols' reaction mechanisms are discussed in light of current understanding of oxygenated hydrocarbon atmospheric chemistry. Labeled (O-18) 2BU/OH reactions were conducted to investigate 2BUs atmospheric transformation mechanism details. The findings reported here can be related to other structurally similar alcohols and may impact regulatory tools such as ground level ozone-forming potential calculations (incremental reactivity).

Book excerpt: The objective of Mechanisms of Inorganic and Organometallic Reactions is to provide an ongoing critical review of the literature concerned with the mechanisms of reactions of inorganic and organometallic compounds. The main focus is on reactions in solution, although solid state and gas phase studies are included where they provide relevant mechanistic insight. Each volume covers an eighteen month literature period, and this, the seventh volume in the series, deals with papers published during July 1988 through December 1989. Where appropriate, there are references to earlier work, and also to specific sections in previous volumes. Coverage continues to span the whole area as comprehensively as possible in each volume, and although it is impossible be absolutely complete, every effort is made to include all the important for it to published work that is relevant to the elucidation of reaction mechanisms. Numerical data are reported in the units used by the original authors, and they are only converted to common units when making comparisons. The basic format of earlier volumes is retained to facilitate tracing progress over several years in a particular topic; this can now be done for more than a decade worth of research. In the last volume, ligand reactivity of both coordination and organometallic compounds were brought together in Chapter 12, and, in response to numerous positive comments from readers, this arrangement has been maintained. There have been some similar suggestions about oscillating reactions, and this topic may have a separate section in the next volume.
