Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IDA Paper P-2347, Relative Approximation Bounds for NP-Complete Optimization Problems, documents a new method for determining lower bounds on the relative accuracy attainable for polynomial-time approximations to certain restricted types of NP-Complete optimization problems. These problems are the bounded optimizations, NP constrained optimizations, and optimizations. The initial tasking was to investigate up to three promising areas in Complexity Theory. The first area involved developing new separation results for Krentel's OptP classification of NP optimization problems. The second area was to examine the possible extension of Krentel's absolute error bounds for NP approximations to relative error bounds, while the third area involved examination of the EP theory of parallel algorithms by Kruskal, Randolph, and Snir. However, time did not permit investigation of the third area.

Book excerpt: Polynomial optimization have been a hot research topic for the past few years and its applications range from Operations Research, biomedical engineering, investment science, to quantum mechanics, linear algebra, and signal processing, among many others. In this brief the authors discuss some important subclasses of polynomial optimization models arising from various applications, with a focus on approximations algorithms with guaranteed worst case performance analysis. The brief presents a clear view of the basic ideas underlying the design of such algorithms and the benefits are highlighted by illustrative examples showing the possible applications. This timely treatise will appeal to researchers and graduate students in the fields of optimization, computational mathematics, Operations Research, industrial engineering, and computer science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to fully address the study of approximation algorithms as a tool for coping with intractable problems. With chapters contributed by leading researchers in the field, this book introduces unifying techniques in the analysis of approximation algorithms. APPROXIMATION ALGORITHMS FOR NP-HARD PROBLEMS is intended for computer scientists and operations researchers interested in specific algorithm implementations, as well as design tools for algorithms. Among the techniques discussed: the use of linear programming, primal-dual techniques in worst-case analysis, semidefinite programming, computational geometry techniques, randomized algorithms, average-case analysis, probabilistically checkable proofs and inapproximability, and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The text includes a variety of pedagogical features: definitions, exercises, open problems, glossary of problems, index, and notes on how best to use the book.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 29th Symposium on Mat- matical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS 2004, held in Prague, Czech Republic, August 22–27, 2004. The conference was organized by the Institute for Theoretical Computer Science (ITI) and the Department of Theoretical Com- terScienceandMathematicalLogic(KTIML)oftheFacultyofMathematicsand Physics of Charles University in Prague. It was supported in part by the Eu- pean Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) and the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM). Traditionally, the MFCS symposia encourage high-quality research in all branches of theoretical computer science. Ranging in scope from automata, f- mal languages, data structures, algorithms and computational geometry to c- plexitytheory, modelsofcomputation, andapplicationsincludingcomputational biology, cryptography, security and arti?cial intelligence, the conference o?ers a unique opportunity to researchers from diverse areas to meet and present their results to a general audience. The scienti?c program of this year’s MFCS took place in the lecture halls of the recently reconstructed building of the Faculty of Mathematics and P- sics in the historical center of Prague, with the famous Prague Castle and other celebratedhistoricalmonumentsinsight.Theviewfromthewindowswasach- lengingcompetitionforthespeakersinthe?ghtfortheattentionoftheaudience. But we did not fear the result: Due to the unusually tough competition for this year’s MFCS, the admitted presentations certainly attracted considerable in- rest. The conference program (and the proceedings) consisted of 60 contributed papers selected by the Program Committee from a total of 167 submissions.

Book excerpt: Brooks' Theorem (1941) is one of the most famous and fundamental theorems in graph theory -- it is mentioned/treated in all general monographs on graph theory. It has sparked research in several directions. This book presents a comprehensive overview of this development and see it in context. It describes results, both early and recent, and explains relations: the various proofs, the many extensions and similar results for other graph parameters. It serves as a valuable reference to a wealth of information, now scattered in journals, proceedings and dissertations. The reader gets easy access to this wealth of information in comprehensive form, including best known proofs of the results described. Each chapter ends in a note section with historical remarks, comments and further results. The book is also suitable for graduate courses in graph theory and includes exercises. The book is intended for readers wanting to dig deeper into graph coloring theory than what is possible in the existing book literature. There is a comprehensive list of references to original sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We investigate here NP optimization problems from a logically definability standpoint. We show that the class of optimization problems whose optimum is definable using first-order formulae coincides with the class of polynomially bounded NP optimization problems on finite structures. After this, we analyze the relative expressive power of various classes of optimization problems that arise in this framework. Some of our results show that logical definability has different implications for NP maximization problems than it has for NP minimization problems, in terms of both expressive power and approximation properties."

The book moves between basic cell biological concepts that form the underpinnings of modern Alzheimer's disease research, and current findings about proteins and cellular processes affected by the disease. Divided into three topics, the book addresses (1) protein trafficking, a problem that has become germane to the study of the amyloid precursor protein; (2) phosphorylation, a problem that underlies studies of the pathological transformation of tau to paired helical filaments; and (3) cell death, a pervasive problem in neurodegeneration.

Book excerpt: An introduction to the methods of designing algorithms for hard computing tasks, concentrating mainly on approximate, randomized, and heuristic algorithms, and on the theoretical and experimental comparison of these approaches according to the requirements of the practice. This is the first book to systematically explain and compare all the main possibilities of attacking hard computing problems. It also closes the gap between theory and practice by providing at once a graduate textbook and a handbook for practitioners dealing with hard computing problems.
