Book excerpt: The importance of children's motor abilities, in relation to other developmental areas, has been acknowledged in both theory and research. However, researchers have typically focused on gross motor abilities in relation to cognitive and social abilities, and associations between fine motor, cognitive, and social abilities have received little research attention. In addition, very few studies have looked at the potential interrelations between motor, social, and cognitive abilities in preschool-aged children with developmental disabilities. The current study examined three areas of development, motor (both fine and gross motor), social, and cognitive skills, in preschool-aged children with developmental disabilities, to see whether there were associations between the three areas. The data for the study come from the Miami School Readiness Project (MSRP), a large-scale, collaborative, school readiness project, taking place in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Participants were children receiving early childhood special education services (N = 3,191), who were assessed for overall development and socio-emotional protective factors in the Fall and Spring of their pre-kindergarten year, using the LAP-D and the DECA. Results indicated that there were definite associations between motor, cognitive, and social skills. Also, both fine motor and gross motor skills in the Fall of the pre-kindergarten year significantly predicted later cognitive and social skills, measured in the Spring of the pre-kindergarten year, after controlling for child gender, age, and disability type; however, associations were stronger for fine motor skills, as opposed to gross motor skills, for both cognitive and social skills. In addition, disability category moderated the associations between motor and social and cognitive skills; however, gender was not a moderator, suggesting that the underlying associations between the three areas are similar for both boys and girls. The findings from this study have important implications for early educational programs and interventions, as well as for policymakers.

Book excerpt: Peer acceptance represents the degree to which a child is well liked by peers, and it is a crucial component of the early childhood years (Ladd & Sechler, 2013). Being accepted among peers impacts multiple areas of child development, including academics, behavior, and social-emotional domains. A child who is highly accepted by their peers is viewed as a preferred playmate and can be observed playing with various peers. Young children's earliest peer relationships begin forming during the preschool years. One predicting factor of peer acceptance is the attachment relationship between the parent and child. The security experiences within parent-child attachment relationships help foster the growth of children's social competence, which in turn allows children to begin forming relationships with other children (Raikes, Virmani, Thompson, & Hatton, 2013; Thompson, 2016). Another important predictor of peer acceptance is children's self-regulation, which includes several cognitive and behavioral processes that allow children to manage their emotions, behavior, and thoughts to better acclimate to their environment (Liew, 2012). Self-regulation is linked to both the parent-child attachment relationship and children's peer acceptance (Contreras, Kerns, Weimer, Gentzler, & Tomich, 2000; Gottman & Mettetal, 1986). The purpose of this study was to test the mediating role of preschoolers' self-regulation on the association between parent-child attachment relationship qualities and preschoolers' peer acceptance. Three mediation models were tested via a structural equation modeling approach using path analysis. In the first mediation model, it was predicted that the model will represent the best fit for the data collected, supporting that children's (girls and boys combined) self-regulation mediates the relation between the parent-child attachment relationship qualities and preschoolers' peer acceptance. Results from the first mediation model indicated that preschoolers' self-regulation mediates the relation of parent-child attachment qualities and preschoolers' peer acceptance. In the second mediation model, it was predicted that older preschoolers will demonstrate stronger self-regulation, compared to younger preschoolers. Results from the second mediation model indicated that children's age significantly predicts preschoolers' self-regulation. In the third mediation model, with sufficient statistical power, it was predicted that girls will demonstrate stronger self-regulation, compared to boys. Results from the third mediation model indicated that children's gender significantly predicts preschoolers' self-regulation. These results contribute to the literature regarding factors that predict peer acceptance and have important implications for children, families, early childhood education teachers, and other professionals who support young children's overall development.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between social acceptance and observed peer interaction in a select group of preschool children. The subjects were 30 children enrolled in two sessions of a child development laboratory sponsored by the Department of Family Life at Oregon State University. The 15 children in the morning session, eight boys and seven girls, ranged in age from three years-eight months to four years-three months. The 15 children in the afternoon session, seven boys and eight girls, ranged in age from three years-six months to four years-five months. The data consisted of a social acceptance score taken from a picture sociometric interview and observed behavior frequencies recorded on the Social Interaction Scale (SIS). Peer interactions observed include aggresive-hostile peer interaction and cooperative- friendly peer interaction. The statistical analysis employed was the Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient (r[subscript s]) method. The specific null hypothesis explored was: There will be no relationship between social acceptance and a) aggressive-hostile peer interaction b) cooperative-friendly peer interaction c) total frequency of peer interaction The correlation coefficients found between social acceptance and aggressive-hostile peer interaction in the morning session were positive and significant when analyzed for the sexes combined. A negligible correlation coefficient (r[subscript]s .035) was indicated for boys and data revealed a tendency toward an inverse relationship (r[subscript s] -. 471) for morning girls. Negative, nonsignificant correlation coefficients were found for the afternoon session when the variables of social acceptance and aggressive-hostile peer interation were analyzed for sexes combined and for boys and girls separately. An r[subscript s] of .686 indicated a positive significant correlation coefficient existing for the afternoon session when the variables of social acceptance and cooperative-friendly peer interaction were analyzed for sexes combined. No further significant correlation coefficients were shown for the afternoon session when analyzed by sex groupings. The correlation coefficients found for the morning session although negligible were in a negative direction. The Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficients calculated for the variables of social acceptance and total frequency of peer interaction were found to be significant only for the afternoon session. A positive significant correlation coefficient, r[subscript s].454, was found in the analysis for the sexes combined and a negative significant relationship, r[subscript s]-.789, was found for boys. The correlation coefficient for the girls was negligible. No significant correlation coefficients were indicated for the morning session although there was a tendency toward a negative relationship when the session was analyzed for sexes combined and for girls. These findings indicate a need for further study of the relationship between social acceptance and observed peer interactions. The nature of the data collected in the present study provides avenues for further research.

The term peer acceptance is defined as "the degree a child is socially accepted or rejected by his or her peer group." Johnson et al. (2002) found children between the ages of three and five were able to develop friendships and social skills that would impact their acceptance among peers. The study determined if children based their choice of peers according to a child's age, gender, ethnicity, appearance, and/or social skills. The subjects of this study were 31 children whose ages were three-, four-, and five-years-old who attended a childcare center in Northwest Arkansas. A sociometric task was used to conduct the research. When presented with a sociometric task and an interview of what makes one want to play with another, the participants tended to base peer acceptance choices on the same gender and same ethnicity. Children did not base their peer acceptance on social skills, age, or appearance. According to the interview responses children chose peers based on the nature of the activity and similarities in play of their pictured peers.

In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services.
