Book excerpt: A critical goal of nursing education is to prepare a future generation of practitioners who can influence outcomes in a complex and changing health care environment. The empowerment of nurses has been associated with positive organizational and health care outcomes. Educational culture, as a major socializing control, has the potential to affect the empowerment of nursing students and their future nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between students' perceptions of organizational culture in their baccalaureate nursing program and the students' self-perceived empowerment. The sample consisted of 231 senior baccalaureate nursing students from 4 public institutions in Northeast Ohio. The Organization Culture Inventory (Cooke & Lafferty, 1983, 1986, 1987, 1989) and the Short Vincenz Empowerment Scale (Vincenz, 1990) were used to measure organizational culture and empowerment, respectively. Findings indicate that, overall, students perceived their baccalaureate nursing program as having a moderately high constructive culture and a moderately low defensive culture. Students also described themselves as having moderately high empowerment. A weak positive relationship was found between students' perception of a constructive organizational culture of their baccalaureate nursing program and their empowerment. A weak inverse relationship was found between students' perception of a defensive culture in their baccalaureate nursing program and their empowerment. Together, the two organizational culture variables explained 7.7% of the variance in student empowerment. An important measurement finding of this study was that two organizational culture concepts, passive-defensive and aggressive-defensive cultures, could not be differentiated in this sample. Although factors other than culture may account more for student empowerment in baccalaureate nursing programs, this study provides support for the existence of an emerging new generation of empowered nurses who have the potential to make a positive impact on the nursing profession and patient care.

The problem under study was how senior-level baccalaureate nursing students perceived the level of caring by their faculty. Nurse educators are in a situation where modeling, dialogue, and practice are a confirmation of caring and influence for nursing students. If it is assumed that caring is a significant part of nursing, then finding the elements of caring within the teaching process as well as in the curriculum content are important. The conceptual framework utilized in this study was Watson's theory of human care. The Organizational Climate for Caring Questionnaire was given to 102 senior-level nursing students at Boise State University and Idaho State University. The sub-scores of the questionnaire were calculated, and means, standard deviations, and minimum and maximum scores reported. Means for the subscales are as follows: modeling (4.16), dialogue (3.86), practice (4.29), and confirmation/affirmation (4.09). These means reflected that the students only slightly agreed that they felt their faculty were caring. This is a concern. Reliability for the subscales was reported using Cronbach's alpha: modeling (0.94), dialogue (0.91), practice (0.86), and confirmation/affirmation (0.92). Future areas of research include how faculty perceive their behavior as caring and whether faculty can learn caring techniques that will enhance student learning. Caring also needs to be incorporated into the nursing curriculum early in education and supported throughout.

This study utilized a quantitative approach to a correlational design using survey methodology for data collection. The first sample consisted of four Christian pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing programs’ Faculty/Staff, Supervisors, and the nursing program’s Top Leadership, along with their pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students. The second sample consisted of three Non-Christian pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing programs’ Faculty/Staff, Supervisor, and nursing program Top Leadership and their pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing students. Many nursing studies reveal a persistent culture of incivility that begins in academia and continues into the graduate nurse’s bedside practice, where nurses are known to “eat their young” (Palumbo, 2018, p. 144; Katz, 2014, p. 1-2). Incivility is a problem in nursing because a toxic environment can adversely affect patient care. This study sought to discern whether servant organizational leadership offered a means to resolve incivility in nursing by producing nursing students who care more. Therefore, this study measured whether servant organizational leadership theory explained the relationship between a Christian and Non-Christian servant leadership organization as measured by the servant Organizational Leadership Assessment - Standard Version (OLA-SV) instrument and the pre-licensure baccalaureate nursing student’s caring dimensions as measured by the Caring Dimensions Inventory - 25 (CDI-25) instrument.
