Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 4.6, , course: Insurance and Risk Management, language: English, abstract: This study explores the effects of reinsurance arrangements on financial performance of insurance companies in Nigeria. It is worthy of note that insurance companies are exposed to a harsh environment once engaged in high-level risk taking that have the potentials to weaken their financial ability to settle claims and mostly threaten their survival. Hence, it is a known fact that reinsurance arrangement can provide some level of financial protections for insurers against the risk of their own default. In particular, the study assessed the effect of reinsurance utilization on underwriting profit, gross premium incomes and gross claim payments of insurance companies in Nigeria. Secondary data was collected from 32 licensed insurance firms who have reinsurance coverage out of the 42 registered insurance companies in Nigeria. The study used expo facto research design and data were gathered from published annual reports of NAICOM, insurers' annual financial reports and NIA digests from 2009-2018.Both descriptive and inferential statistics of OLS were employed in analyzing the data.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2024 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, University of Nigeria (Management Science), course: Insurance, language: English, abstract: This study examines the determinants of insurance companies' performance and their impacts on Nigerian insurance industry from 2010-2019. No doubt insurance companies' performance determinants play significant roles in the overall development and growth of the insurance industry. In particular, the study assessed the impact of returns on assets on leverage ratio; retention ratio; underwriting risk; and management competence index; and on the overall performance of the Nigerian insurance industry from 2010-2019. Secondary data were sourced from 32 licensed insurance companies who their financial reports were readily available for the purpose of this study. The study used expo facto research design and data were gathered from published annual reports of NAICOM, insurers' annual financial reports and NIA digests from 2010-2019. Both descriptive and inferential statistics of OLS were employed in analysing the data using E-views version 10. This study led to the conclusion that profitability of insurance companies in Nigeria is positively and significantly influenced by leverage, management competence index, retention ratio and underwriting risk. The study recommended among others that for that insurance companies in Nigeria to perform better in terms of their return on assets, they should improve on their leverages, retention ratio, underwriting and management competence index by recruiting employees who had completed higher education and who are certified professionals.

It provides a brief overview of the insurance industry and reviews the risks it faces, as well as several recent failures of insurance companies that had systemic implications. Assimilation of banking-type activities by life insurers appears to be the key systemic vulnerability. Building on this experience and the experience gained under the FSAP, the paper proposes key indicators that should be compiled and used for surveillance of financial soundness of insurance companies and the insurance sector as a whole.

Book excerpt: In today's rapidly changing and increasingly complex business world, successful risk management is the key to survival and success. Business leaders are increasingly facing different kinds of risk, from those traditionally associated with the market- project risks, competitive risks, and currency risks, to a set of new, more hazardous threats. Businesses in the Twenty-First century face a range of global risks. These are having an increasingly large impact on the activities of individual firms. While ten or fifteen years ago, risks flowing from civil unrest, climate change, terrorism or pandemics had a very limited effect on business, this is no longer the case. Risks beyond the control of the firm affect businesses more than ever before. Risk is the business of business, and the fundamental job of executives is to anticipate change and manage it on the basis of an opinion about the future. Those who don't take and manage risks properly lose ground and are eventually driven out.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses key findings of the Financial System Stability Assessment Report on Barbados. Barbados has a relatively well-developed financial system, including a large offshore sector. The onshore system is dominated by large, regionally active banks. Banking services to the population are also provided by the credit union sector. With a deteriorating fiscal situation and weak growth prospects, Barbados faces considerable macroeconomic vulnerabilities. Although the financial system does not appear to be a source of immediate risk, its position appears to be deteriorating, with implications for systemic stability.
