Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notwithstanding its title, the reader will not find in this book a systematic account of this huge subject. Certain classical aspects have been passed by, and the true title ought to be "Various questions of elementary combina torial analysis". For instance, we only touch upon the subject of graphs and configurations, but there exists a very extensive and good literature on this subject. For this we refer the reader to the bibliography at the end of the volume. The true beginnings of combinatorial analysis (also called combina tory analysis) coincide with the beginnings of probability theory in the 17th century. For about two centuries it vanished as an autonomous sub ject. But the advance of statistics, with an ever-increasing demand for configurations as well as the advent and development of computers, have, beyond doubt, contributed to reinstating this subject after such a long period of negligence. For a long time the aim of combinatorial analysis was to count the different ways of arranging objects under given circumstances. Hence, many of the traditional problems of analysis or geometry which are con cerned at a certain moment with finite structures, have a combinatorial character. Today, combinatorial analysis is also relevant to problems of existence, estimation and structuration, like all other parts of mathema tics, but exclusively forjinite sets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the limits of metaphysics and the question of the possibility of ethics in this context. It is divided into six chapters, the first of which broadens readers’ understanding of difference as difference with specific reference to the works of Hegel. The second chapter discusses the works of Emmanuel Lévinas and the question of the ethical. In turn, the concepts of sovereignty and the eternal return are discussed in chapters three and four, while chapter five poses the question of literature in a new way. The book concludes with chapter six. The book represents an important contribution to the field of contemporary philosophical debates on the possibility of ethics beyond all possible metaphysical and political closures. As such, it will be of interest to scholars and researchers in both the humanities and social sciences. Beyond the academic world, the book will also appeal to readers (journalists, intellectuals, social activists, etc.) for whom the question of the ethical is the decisive question of our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marmaduke Pickthall was a prolific British novelist, essayist, journalist, and short story writer who was positively received by his contemporaries for his fictional oeuvre, but is hardly known in the current literary world. Despite his obvious talents, Pickthall was unfortunately ignored when the English literary canon was formed in the mid-twentieth century. Today, he is only remembered for his conversion to Islam, his Turkish sympathies, and his translation of the Holy Quran to English in 1930. Ebtisam A. Sadiq, Naela H. Danish, and Afra S. Al-Shiban rely on extensive research of nineteenth-century British literature with the hope of reintroducing Pickthall to the literary world. In comprehensive analysis that includes the forgotten authors Eastern novels, Western tales, and collections of short stories, the researchers utilize contemporary theories of criticismparticularly postcolonialism, modern realist traditions, and feminismto scrutinize and highlight the nature of his contribution to English literature. Included are examinations of Pickthalls affiliation or withdrawal from literary traditions like Victorianism and Modernism and what exactly determines his canonical status. Marmaduke Pickthall Reinstated shares research and examinations of a forgotten authors literary works with the intent that they finally find a long overdue place in mainstream English literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Inessential Solidarity, Diane Davis examines critical intersections of rhetoric and sociality in order to revise some of rhetorical theory's basic presumptions. Rather than focus on the arguments and symbolic exchanges through which social relations are defined, Davis exposes an underivable rhetorical imperative, an obligation to respond that is as undeniable as the obligation to age. Situating this response-ability as the condition for, rather than the effect of, symbolic interaction, Davis both dissolves contemporary concerns about linguistic overdetermination and calls into question long-held presumptions about rhetoric's relationship with identification, figuration, hermeneutics, agency, and judgment. Spotlighting a rhetorical "situation" irreducible to symbolic relations, Davis proposes quite provocatively that rhetoric—rather than ontology (Aristotle/Heidegger), epistemology (Descartes), or ethics (Levinas)—is "first philosophy." The subject or "symbol-using animal" comes into being, Davis argues both with and against Emmanuel Levinas, only inasmuch as it responds to the other; the priority of the other is not a matter of the subject's choice, then, but of its inescapable predicament. Directing the reader's attention to this inessential solidarity without which no meaning-making or determinate social relation would be possible, Davis aims to nudge rhetorical studies beyond the epistemological concerns that typically circumscribe theories of persuasion toward the examination of a more fundamental affectability, persuadability, responsivity.

Surrounding towns and smaller cities survive the meteors but are thrust into an apocalyptic nightmare. The survivors quickly realize it was not meteors that destroyed the major cities; it was a deliberate and orchestrated attack from above. The power quickly goes out, and cell phones become useless. People begin to loot and kill for basic necessities. Survivors from across the country must now survive not only the attack but each other. What is left of the US population is trying to get to an Air Force base in the Pacific Northwest that is rumored to be operational. Before they can organize anything, extraterrestrials begin showing up to take care of the surviving human population. Most of the surviving humans are killed, but a select few are spared and taken onto the mothership. These are what the aliens are calling "the Chosen Ones." A few of the chosen ones happen upon some sinister things the aliens are doing to humans aboard. The aliens eventually reveal their plans for the human race, and it does not sit well with anyone. The aliens have the upper hand. The humans are trapped with no way of fighting back. Any resistance is quickly met with deadly repercussions. Three brave survivors hatch a plan to destroy the mothership and hopefully save humanity. No matter if they succeed or fail, the human race will never be the same again. Life on Earth will forever be changed.

Book excerpt: Rarely has the history or philosophy of mathematics been written about by mathematicians, and the analysis of mathematical texts themselves has been an area almost entirely unexplored. Figures of Thought looks at ways in which mathematical works can be read as texts, examines their textual strategies and demonstrates that such readings provide a rich source of philosophical issues regarding mathematics: issues which traditional approaches to the history and philosophy of mathematics have neglected. David Reed, a professional mathematician himself, offers the first sustained and critical attempt to find a consistent argument or narrative thread in mathematical texts. In doing so he develops new and fascinating interpretations of mathematicians' work throughout history, from an in-depth analysis of Euclid's Elements, to the mathematics of Descartes and right up to the work of contemporary mathematicians such as Grothendeick. He also traces the implications of this approach to the understanding of the history and development of mathematics.

Book excerpt: In the outskirts of space, and the far corners of the Polity, complex dealings are in play. Several forces continue to pursue the deadly and enigmatic Penny Royal, none more dangerous than the Brockle, a psychopathic forensics AI and criminal who has escaped the Polity’s confinements and is upgrading itself in anticipation of a deadly showdown, becoming ever more powerful and intelligent. Aboard Factory Station Room 101, the behemoth war factory that birthed Penny Royal, groups of humans, alien prador, and AI war drones grapple for control. The stability of the ship is complicated by the arrival of a gabbleduck known as the Weaver, the last living member of the ancient and powerful Atheter alien race. What would an Atheter want with the complicated dealings of Penny Royal? Are the Polity and prador forces playing right into the dark AI’s hand, or is it the other way around? Set pieces align in the final book of Neal Asher’s action-packed Transformation trilogy, pointing to a showdown on the cusp of the Layden’s Sink black hole, inside of which lies a powerful secret, one that could destroy the entire Polity.
