Book excerpt: Natural Fiber Reinforced Vinyl Ester and Vinyl Polymer Composites: Characterization, Properties and Applications discusses recent advances on the development, characterization and application of natural fiber vinyl ester and vinyl polymers composites. Various types of vinyl ester and vinyl based polymers, such as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), low and high density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) are discussed. Chapters focus on different composite fabrication processes, such as compression moulding, hand lay-up, and pultrusion processes. Key themes covered include the properties and characterization of vinyl ester and vinyl polymers composites reinforced by natural fibers. The effect of fiber treatment and coupling agents on mechanical and physical properties of these materials is also evaluated. In addition to a determination of physical and mechanical properties, studies on thermal, degradation, swelling behavior, and the morphological properties of natural fiber reinforced vinyl ester and vinyl polymer composites is also presented. Presents the importance of vinyl ester and vinyl-based polymers as matrices in natural fiber composites Provides a detailed and comprehensive review on the development, characterization and applications of natural fiber vinyl ester and vinyl polymers composites Looks at recent fabrication techniques and the mechanical properties of materials Contains contributions from leading experts in the field
Book Synopsis Reinforced Polymer Composites by : Victor V. Tcherdyntsev
Download or read book Reinforced Polymer Composites written by Victor V. Tcherdyntsev and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, consisting of 21 articles, including three review papers, written by research groups of experts in the field, considers recent research on reinforced polymer composites. Most of them relate to the fiber-reinforced polymer composites, which are a real hot topic in the field. Depending on the reinforcing fiber nature, such composites are divided into synthetic and natural fiber-reinforced ones. Synthetic fibers, such as carbon, glass, or basalt, provide more stiffness, while natural fibers, such as jute, flax, bamboo, kenaf, and others, are inexpensive and biodegradable, making them environmentally friendly. To acquire the benefits of design flexibility and recycling possibilities, natural reinforcers can be hybridized with small amounts of synthetic fibers to make them more desirable for technical applications. Elaborated composites have great potential as structural materials in automotive, marine and aerospace application, as fire resistant concrete, in bridge systems, as mechanical gear pair, as biomedical materials for dentistry and orthopedic application and tissue engineering, as well as functional materials such as proton-exchange membranes, biodegradable superabsorbent resins and polymer electrolytes.
Book Synopsis Investigation of Filament Reinforced Plastics for Deep-submergence Application by : Kenneth Hom
Download or read book Investigation of Filament Reinforced Plastics for Deep-submergence Application written by Kenneth Hom and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results to date of structural research programs to investigate lightweight, glass-reinforced plastics or composite materials for deep-submergence vehicles are summarized. Of significance from these studies is the need to consider effects attributable to the matrix material and bonding between fibers and matrix, that is, maintaining integrity of the structure in a water environment under high pressure and utilizing hull concepts which lend themselves to shear-sensitive materials. Plans for present and future structural research to study more extensively the use of fiber-reinforced plastic materials for pressure hull applications are also reviewed. (Author).

Covers all areas relevant to advanced FRP composites, from the material itself, its manufacturing, properties, testing and applications in structural engineering Features new manufacturing techniques, such as automated fiber placement and 3D printing of composites Includes various applications, such as prestressed-FRP, FRP made of short fibers, continuous structural health monitoring using advanced optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG), durability of FRP-strengthened structures, and the application of carbon nano-tubes or platelets for enhancing durability of FRP-bonded structures
Book Synopsis Reinforced Plastics Durability by : Geoffrey Pritchard
Download or read book Reinforced Plastics Durability written by Geoffrey Pritchard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-01-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced plastics are becoming widely adopted for long-term structural use-in everything from buildings and bridges to boats and swimming pools. However, the lifetimes being sought are far greater than the whole history of reinforced plastics production! Reinforced Plastics Durability explores the strength and weathering characteristics which make the material ideal for numerous applications, but also alerting the user of wear and corrosion-with studies of the processes and mechanisms which cause the deterioration. Written especially for first-time users of reinforced plastics-engineers, designers, and managers alike-Reinforced Plastics Durability offers substantial introductory information with key concepts. Subsequent chapters examine the long-term threats to the integrity of reinforced plastics: outdoor weathering, solvent/water attack, high temperatures, and repetitive stress. To maximize durability, contributors to the book report on experience with specific applications over time; the possibility of repair; and use of computer techniques to predict durability. Despite mentioning many possible threats to durability, Reinforced Plastics Durability emphasizes the fact that reinforced plastics composites have performed very well in most of the application areas. Readers will be able to take advantage of that success-and to possibly take steps toward the next phase of refinements and improvements.
