Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concrete Bridges and Culverts, for Both Railroads and Highways Bridges of solid concrete are superior to those of any other material. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuous Concrete Bridges Only single bearings are required at interior supports of continuous bridges, materially reducing the width of piers compared to simple spans. Cost of the substructure is thereby reduced; obstruction to stream flow is minimized and the tendency to scour resulting from large piers is lessened. Continuous bridges require fewer expansion joints, which reduces first cost slightly and the expense of maintaining joints. In a well designed continuous girder bridge, the depth of sections follows closely the moment requirements, varying from a minimum at the center of spans to a maximum at the supports. The effect of dead load on the design is reduced accordingly. The variation of section from center of spans to sup ports is also favorable to the stress requirements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete Construction, Vol. 3: Bridges and Culverts, Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin A concrete arch as ordinarily constructed - that is, with fixed ends - is statically indeterminate, but it can be analyzed by taking into account the elasticity of the material. The arch ring is nothing more than a curved beam and is so considered. In arches of stone, it is essential (if we disregard, as we should, the adhesion between the mortar and the stone) that the line of pressure for any possible loading should pass within the middle third of each joint of the arch ring, in order to avoid a tendency for any joint to Open. In arches of concrete, however, the structure considered may be made monolithic and thus capable of withstanding tension, which means that the line of pressure may pass outside of the middle third without endangering the structure. As regards a plain-concrete arch, no variation of the line of pressure from the middle third should properly be allowed in practice, due, of course, to the low strength of concrete in tension but, on the other hand, where concrete is reinforced with steel, a considerable variation of this line may be permitted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced Concrete is a text co-authored by Albert Wells Buel and C.S. Hill. This is an in depth work intended for those working in the construction industry. Reinforced Concrete is a detailed examination of the use of reinforced concrete in construction, and is aimed squarely at engineers involved in the design and production of large projects. The work is divided into three parts, with part one authored by Buel and parts two and three authored by Hill. Buel's opening section provides the reader with formulas for calculating the proper usage of reinforced concrete in buildings. From there, in part two, Hill outlines practical examples of reinforced concrete used in a variety of different scenarios, including building construction and cement storage tanks. The book closes with a detailed section on various methods of construction, addressing buildings, bridges, foundations, conduits, and more. Buel and Hill's work is a highly technical affair intended for the professional. It is a well written and thorough examination of reinforced concrete, although the authors do assume the reader is already comfortable with a range of engineering principles. Reinforced Concrete tackles its subject matter with gusto. The authors bring a sense of passion, making this a surprisingly pleasant read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Design of Reinforced Concrete Arches: A Treatise for Engineers and Technical Students Of all the problems in bridge designing the analysis of the elastic arch is by far the most difficult. The works which have heretofore appeared on this subject are either so mathematically abstruse, or leave so much to the reader to demonstrate for him self, that they are of little value to the practical engineer or to the technical student whose mathematical training has not been of exceptional order. The entire absence in technical literature of a work obviating these unfortunate features has been brought so forcibly to the attention of the author that he has felt justified in undertaking the present work. It was felt that the graphical method of analysis would be preferred by both engineers and technical students to the longer and more involved mathematical method of analysis. Every principle involved in the graphical treatment is ex plained thoroughly and in detail in the theoretical portion of the work. There are no missing steps in the necessary mathematical analysis of the theory as set forth in the present treatise. The author has in preparation a companion volume to the present one, which will treat of hinged arches and unsymmetrical arches. The author wishes to express his indebtedness to the classic work of Professor Henry T. Eddy, and to the works of Professor William Cain. He also desires to express his sincere appreciation to Mr. Roy Malony, B. S. In C. E., for making the drawings for the plates; to Mr. Avery F. Crounse, B. S. E., for checking the stress calculations: to Mr. Charles F. Smith, bridge engineer (graduate of Engineering Department, U. S. Military Academy, West Point), for the final reading of the manuscript: and to Mr. A. D. Butler, B. S. In C. E., for critical reading of proofs. The author is especially grateful to the publishers for the splendid aid they have extended him and for the exceptional care they have taken in the production of this work. Through the courtesy of the Concrete Steel Engineering Com pany of New York the author is able to include in the present work the specifications of that company for reinforced concrete bridges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Bridges and Buildings In preparing this volume the aim of the authors has been to treat in a systematic manner the entire subject of foundations for bridges and buildings as represented by American engineering practice. Only occasional references are made to foreign practice. It was hoped, at first, to accomplish this task within the limits of about 300 pages, but as the work progressed it became evident that this could not be done without abbreviating the treatment of many topics so much as to become unsatisfactory. In many cases, space has been economized by inserting additional illustrations and reducing descriptions in the text. A large proportion of space is devoted to piles and pile driving, since young engineers are more likely to obtain their early experience with pile foundations than with any other class of foundation construction. Many facts derived from experience are given to emphasize and illustrate the application of fundamental principles and to form a rational basis for that kind of judgment which is such an important element in an engineers professional practice. The undesirable features of considerable pile driving in this country have been due as much to the assumption that the art of pile driving is so simple that the aid of science is not essential, as to the attempt of some engineers to base the art upon theoretical rules which fail to take into account many practical factors of the problem. Another reason for extending the treatment is due to the recent introduction of concrete piles which will help to retain the dominant place that pile foundations have held heretofore among other classes of foundations. The attention of engineering teachers is called to the arrangement of the topics in the first five chapters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to make the material presented in my book, Stahlbetonbrucken, accessible to a larger number of engineers throughout the world. A work in English, the logical choice for this task, had been contemplated as Stahlbetonbrucken was still in its earliest stages of preparation. The early success of Stahlbetonbrucken provided significant impetus for the writing of Prestressed Concrete Bridges, which began soon after the publication of its predecessor. The present work is more than a mere translation of Stahlbetonbrucken. Errors in Stahlbetonbrucken that were detected after publication have been corrected. New material on the relation between cracking in concrete and corrosion of reinforce ment, prestressing with unbonded tendons, skew-girder bridges, and cable-stayed bridges has been added. Most importantly, however, the presentation of the material has been extensively reworked to improve clarity and consistency. Prestressed Concrete Bridges can thus be regarded as a thoroughly new and improved edition of its predecessor.
