Book excerpt: The ureides allantoin and allantoic acid are the major long-distance forms of nitrogen (N) in nodulated tropical legumes like French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and soybean (Glycine max). The ureides are synthesized in nodules and roots and are then translocated in the xylem to the shoot for transient storage, catabolism, or loading into the phloem for further distribution of N to sink tissues like developing pods. Previous research showed that French bean PvUPS1, transports allantoin in yeast. In this study two UPS1 homologs from soybean were identified and their importance for source-sink translocation of ureides and soybean physiology analyzed.

A recent educational survey of nations, belonging to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed that school children are more literate with ecological terms (as listed above) than with 'pure' scientific terms, like 'phloem', 'mitosis', 'proton', or 'Jurasic period'. The goal of the symposium was to trace the pathway by which nitrogen passes from soil and atmosphere into both primary and secondary nitrogenous metabolites, focusing upon areas which were felt to be most rapidly expanding. From nodulines (nodule specific proteins) and GS/GOGAT mutants to sugar mimics (polyhydroxyalkaloids) and herbicide inhibitors of amino acid metabolism, research in nitrogen metabolism has expanded into areas barely envisioned only a few years ago. Both the nitrogen specialist and the general plant biochemist will be pleased by the range of topics covered here. Following an overview in Chapter 1 of plant nitrogen metabolism, the remaining chapters are loosely organized into three groups.
