Book Synopsis Advances in Lipid Research by : Rodolfo Paoletti
Download or read book Advances in Lipid Research written by Rodolfo Paoletti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Lipid Research, Volume 14 is a five-chapter text that covers other important aspects of lipid chemistry, including an enzyme controlling cholesterol biogenesis, fatty acid activation, and lipid synthesis. The first chapter concerns with the control of activity of ?-hydroxy-?-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase. The second chapter deals with the specificity, localization, and function of fatty acid activation. The third chapter describes the interaction between polyene antibiotics and sterols. This chapter specifically tackles some antibiotic activity to understand membrane function and in vivo hypolipidemic activity. The fourth chapter focuses on the lipids in plant cultures, while the fifth chapter looks into the methods of synthesis of acylglycerols and phosphoglycerides. This book will prove useful to lipid chemists, biochemists, and researchers.

Book Synopsis Current Topics in Cellular Regulation by : Bernard L. Horecker
Download or read book Current Topics in Cellular Regulation written by Bernard L. Horecker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Topics in Cellular Regulation, Volume 11 focuses on the biochemical mechanisms and key role of the liver in the homeostasis of blood glucose. This book begins with a discussion of glucokinase that is known to play a key role in glucose uptake by liver, followed by a broad overview of the mechanisms that control both glucose uptake by and release from the liver and enzymes involved in glycogen synthesis and breakdown. The classical enzyme models for allosteric regulatory mechanisms known as the biodegradative threonine deaminase are also elaborated. Other topics include the control of blood cholesterol levels, use of cultured mammalian cells, and studies of mutant cell lines. A model for protein turnover is likewise presented, including other mechanisms for the selective degradation of protein, selective uptake by lysosomes, and possible role of stabilizing factors. This publication concludes with an evaluation of complex regulatory mechanisms proposed for the regulation of photosynthetic carbon assimilation. This volume is recommended for biologists and researchers interested in advances in the general area of cellular regulation.

Book Synopsis Biological Effects of Cholesterol Oxides by : Shi-Kaung Peng
Download or read book Biological Effects of Cholesterol Oxides written by Shi-Kaung Peng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-11-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, researchers have accumulated a growing body of evidence linking cholesterol oxides with human diseases such as atherosclerosis and cancer. This book presents what is presently known about the biological activities of cholesterol oxides and is intended to stimulate thinking in new areas of diet-heart or diet-cancer research. Topics discussed include the oxidation of cholesterol, methods of analysis of cholesterol oxides, cholesterol oxide content in foods, effects of cholesterol oxides on cell membranes, and cytotoxicity of cholesterol oxides. The book will be an essential reference source for researchers working directly with cholesterol and cholesterol oxides, as well as researchers concerned with the wider aspects of chemistry, biology, and medicine.

Book Synopsis The Biology of Cholesterol and Related Steroids by : N. B. Myant
Download or read book The Biology of Cholesterol and Related Steroids written by N. B. Myant and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 925 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biology of Cholesterol and Related Steroids focuses on the study of sterols in relation to living organisms. The publication first takes a look at the analysis of sterols and related steroids and the distribution of sterols and related steroids in nature, as well as the processes of extraction and separation and presence of sterols in plants, fungi, vertebrates, and invertebrates. The text then ponders on biosynthesis of sterols and metabolism of cholesterol. Topics include formation of fatty acid esters of cholesterol, steroid hormones, biosynthetic pathway to sterols, reaction mechanisms, and comparative aspects of sterol synthesis. The manuscript examines the developmental aspects of cholesterol metabolism and sterols in biological membranes. The book also reviews cholesterol synthesis in animal tissues, sterol metabolism in isolated cells, and epidemiology of the plasma cholesterol. Discussions focus on selection of statistical populations, genetic influences, regulation of sterol synthesis, general aspects of sterol metabolism, and removal of cell cholesterol in vivo. The publication is a dependable source of data for biochemists and readers interested in the biology of cholesterol and steroids.

Book Synopsis Cholesterol Autoxidation by : Leland L. Smith
Download or read book Cholesterol Autoxidation written by Leland L. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most components of the biosphere are continuously ex posed to oxygen from the atmosphere. Accordingly, the inex orable deterioration of all organic compounds by the slow attack of oxygen must occur. Despite this eventuality, a definitive treatment of oxygen-dependent decomposition of any single important natural product has not heretofore been made. The instant monograph attempts to provide a complete description of the autoxidation of one such impor tantnatural product, cholesterol, as the matter is currently understood. The autoxidation of cholesterol in Nature has been a matter of interest to others since the close of the nine teenth century and to me for the past three decades. In this monograph I present aspects of what I have learned about cholesterol autoxidation during that interval. Be cause of the diffuse ann troublesoae nature of the subject I have selected to cite references to the literature rather fully, so that all items discussed may be properly evaluated by the interested reader. Though such extensive citation of references makes for labored reading, I hope the text will serve as a definitive treatment of the subject from which other studies may be engendered without extensive recourse to the older material. An .attempt has been made to include much related in formation so that a detailed awareness of the interrelation ships between cholesterol autoxidation and other aspects of chemistry, metabolism, and toxicology may be had. I risk teaching more on the subject than any reader care to learn.
