Book excerpt: "Although it had never been systematically studied, it is commonly assumed that Dutch (non-tonal) dialects have their own characteristic sentence melodies, and that intonation is a cue someone's origins. The present thesis explored how 120 speakers of six varieties spoken in the Netherlands pronounced intonation contours in various contexts. Intonation contours that appear on final syllables are often not fully pronounced. First, a detailed investigation showed how speakers preferred different strategies in dealing with such time pressure. Some chose to speed up the contour, whereas others ended it prematurely. Some also created more time for the contour by realizing tones earlier or increasing syllable durations. Next, our study showed that realizational variation follows a geographical cline. The two geographically most extreme varieties, in Southwestern Zeeland and Northeastern Groningen, differed most from each other, with the other varieties generally in between. Zeeland speakers had the shortest segmental durations and the lowest, shallowest and smallest contours, compared to longer, higher, steeper and larger contours in the North-East. Finally, melody preferences and non-standard realizations were studied in statements, questions and rhetorical questions. Speakers of Zeelandic Dutch uniquely used falling contours on both statements and questions, though pronouncing them differently. These speakers also had a striking rising-rising pronunciation of the melody used in rhetorical questions, unlike the more common rising-falling-rising melody in the other varieties. Finally, falling melodies in Amsterdam were particularly flat and long, often with a late peak."--Back cover.

It contributes to the growing interest in gradience and variation in theoretical phonology by combing research on the factors underlying variability and systematic quantitative results with theoretical phonological considerations. Variation is inherent to language, and one of the aims of phonological theory is to describe and explain the mechanisms underlying variation at every level of phonological representation. Variation below the segment concerns articulatory, acoustic and perceptual cues that contribute to the formation of natural classes of sounds. At the segmental level there are grammatical differences in the production and perception of contextual variation of segments and in the syntagmatic constraints on the combination of segments. At the suprasegmental level the mapping of tones to grammatical functions and vice versa is discussed. Further aspects addressed in this book are factors outside of language: Variation that arises as a result of a particular dialect or of belonging to a certain age group, or variation that is the consequence of language change. Gradience and variation have always been a central issue in phonetic and sociolinguistic research. Gradience introduces variation in phonology as well. If a phonetic entity can be pronounced in different ways, depending on the environment, prosodic factors or dialectal influences, this ‘gradience’ may introduce ‘variation’, which we understand as a stable state of grammar.

During Carnival season each year, this group reenacts dramatic events which affected black slaves in colonial Panama, performs dances and pantomimes, and enforces a set of ritual laws' and punishments'. A key component of congo games is a special dialect, the hablar en congos, which is employed by a subset of the congos in each settlement. The present study investigates the congo dialect from a linguistic point of view along two dimensions. The first involves deliberate phonetic, syntactic, and semantic distortion as part of the overall spirit of of burlesque and ridicule that surrounds Panamanian Carnival. The second is the retention of earlier, partially creolized Afro-Hispanic language forms which may still be extracted from contemporary congo speech. These Afro-Hispanic vestiges are of key importance to monogenetic theories of Afro-Romance creolization as Panamanian congo speech provides examples of unique creolized Spanish.
