Book Synopsis Governing Cities Through Regions by : Roger Keil
Download or read book Governing Cities Through Regions written by Roger Keil and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2016-12-12 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region is back in town. Galloping urbanization has pushed beyond historical notions of metropolitanism. City-regions have experienced, in Edward Soja’s terms, “an epochal shift in the nature of the city and the urbanization process, marking the beginning of the end of the modern metropolis as we knew it.” Governing Cities Through Regions broadens and deepens our understanding of metropolitan governance through an innovative comparative project that engages with Anglo-American, French, and German literatures on the subject of regional governance. It expands the comparative angle from issues of economic competiveness and social cohesion to topical and relevant fields such as housing and transportation, and it expands comparative work on municipal governance to the regional scale. With contributions from established and emerging international scholars of urban and regional governance, the volume covers conceptual topics and case studies that contrast the experience of a range of Canadian metropolitan regions with a strong selection of European regions. It starts from assumptions of limited conversion among regions across the Atlantic but is keenly aware of the remarkable differences in urban regions’ path dependencies in which the larger processes of globalization and neo-liberalization are situated and materialized.

Book Synopsis Regional Perspectives on Dollarization in Canada by : Michel A. R. Beine
Download or read book Regional Perspectives on Dollarization in Canada written by Michel A. R. Beine and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we investigate whether it is preferable for Canadian regions to individually adopt the U.S. dollar or to remain with the current currency arrangement. The empirical analysis focuses on the cross-correlations of various business cycle measures of Canadian regions, of Canada, and of the United States. The business cycle investigation is completed by the analysis of two other important criteria for optimum currency areas, industrial specialization and trade interdependence. Our results highlight a significant heterogeneity across Canadian provinces. In particular, it transpires that it could be economically advantageous for the central provinces of Ontario and Quebec and to a lesser extent British Columbia to adopt the U.S. dollar. In contrast, it is not as clear what the other regions should do, the final answer depending on the path the larger three provinces take.

Book Synopsis Why Regions Matter: Small Worlds in Comparative Perspective by : Ailsa Henderson
Download or read book Why Regions Matter: Small Worlds in Comparative Perspective written by Ailsa Henderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together experts on regionalism and federalism this collection explores the impact of legislative regions on parties and voters. It reflects on the 1980 publication of Small Worlds by David Elkins and Richard Simeon, which outlined how and why voters and policies differ across Canadian provinces. Using recent data, the essays in this collection provide a comparative re-examination of the impact of regions. The book explores attitude divergence in Canada and in the US, the role and impact of regional parties in Quebec, Scotland and Bavaria, the impact of multi-level governance on how citizens understand and discharge their duties and the capacity of sub-state political systems to influence general political attitudes. The result is an empirical and analytical contribution to regionalism and federalism studies that demonstrates how and why regions matter. This book was published as a special issue of Regional and Federal Studies.
Book Synopsis Asian Regionalism, Canadian and Indian Perspectives by : Charan D. Wadhva
Download or read book Asian Regionalism, Canadian and Indian Perspectives written by Charan D. Wadhva and published by APH Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada and India are in many ways natural partners-two middle powers sharing a common political and legal tradition derived from the British Commonwelath, as well as a commitment to multiculturalism, democracy adn international institutions. India's founding Prime Minsiter Jawaharlal nehry had a personal friendship with Canadian Prime Ministers Trudeau and Pearson. Despite this promising start, bilateral relations never took flight-a functiona of Cold War politics, India's relative isolation through much of the post-indepenendence period, the enormous distance between the two countries, and , deep disagreements over India's testing of nuclear weapons in 1974 and 1998. By the start of the new millennium, India and Canada were ready to embark on a new phase in bilateral relations-one defined not only by trade and investment interests, but also by a contemporary understanding of their standing in the world, and the potential contribution that both countries can make to issues of regional and global significance.
