Book excerpt: For decades the Upper Cretaceous Lower Tuscaloosa Formation of the U.S. Gulf Coast has been considered an onshore hydrocarbon play with no equivalent offshore deposits. A better understanding of the Lower Tuscaloosa sequence stratigraphic and paleogeographic framework, source-to-sink depositional environments, magnitude of fluvial systems, regional trends in reservoir quality, and structural influences on its deposition along with newly acquired data from offshore wells has changed this decades-long paradigm of the Lower Tuscaloosa as simply an onshore play. The mid-Cenomanian unconformity, underlying the Lower Tuscaloosa, formed an extensive regional network of incised valleys. This incision and accompanying low accommodation allowed for sediment bypass and deposition of over 330 m thick gravity-driven sand-rich deposits over 400 km from their equivalent shelf edge. Subsequently a transgressive systems tract comprised of four fluvial sequences in the Lower Tuscaloosa Massive sand and an overlying estuarine sequence (Stringer sand) filled the incised valleys. Both wave- and tide-dominated deltaic facies of the Lower Tuscaloosa are located at the mouths of incised valleys proximal to the shelf edge. Deltaic and estuarine depositional environments were interpreted from impoverished trace fossil suites of the Cruziana Ichnofacies and detailed sedimentological observations. The location and trend of valleys are controlled by basement structures. Lower Tuscaloosa rivers were 3.8m - 7.8m deep and 145m - 721m wide comparable to the Siwalik Group outcrop and the modern Missouri River. These systems were capable of transporting large amounts of sediment indicating the Lower Tuscaloosa was capable of transporting large amounts of sediments to the shelf edge for resedimentation into the deep offshore. Anomalously high porosity (>25%) and permeability (>1200md) in the Lower Tuscaloosa at stratigraphic depths below 20,000 ft. are influenced by chlorite coating the detrital grains. Chlorite coatings block quartz nucleation sites inhibiting quartz cementation. Chlorite coats in the Lower Tuscaloosa are controlled by the presence and abundance of volcanic rock fragments supplying the ions needed for the formation of chlorite. Chlorite decrease to the east in sediments derived from the Appalachian Mountains. An increase in chlorite in westward samples correlates with an increase of volcanic rock fragments derived from the Ouachita Mountains.

Book excerpt: The Pettet Limestone of the Wright Mountain field on the northeastern flank of the East Texas Basin in Smith County, Texas has been a carbonate hydrocarbon reservoir for nearly 70 years. The Upper Sligo interval (Pettet Limestone) was deposited during the lower most part of the Aptian composite section (124 to ~123 Ma) putting the Pettet carbonate strata in a transgressive setting that onlapped continental to shallow marine siliciclastics. The goals of this investigation include: (1) defining the regional and local depositional setting, (2) characterizing the carbonate and siliciclastic lithofacies that compose the section, (3) creating a depositional model that explains the lithofacies in the cored Pettet B and C units, (4) characterizing the type and abundance of organic matter within the lithofacies, (5) describing the paragenesis of the lithofacies, and (6) evaluating the pore types and reservoir quality of the different lithofacies. The depositional model is developed to help understand comparable skeletal oolitic lime packstone and grainstone deposits occurring in other oil and gas fields. After investigation, the Pettet Limestone of the Wright Mountain field was deemed an off-shoal complex (lateral to shoal body). The Pettet B and C units show evidence of a shoaling upward sequence but not necessarily into complete shoal-water complexes (higher energy carbonate shallow-water complexes). The model proposed suggests the Pettet B and C were deposited laterally adjacent to the shoal, in a slightly deeper, lower-energy setting towards the bottom of fair-weather wave base. Products of resedimentation are present in the Pettet Limestone and are likely results of storm remobilization, transport, and subsequent deposition

Book excerpt: Valhalla Field, discovered in 1979 and located in northwest Alberta, produces from the Upper Cretaceous Doe Creek Member of the Kaskapau Formation. Original reserves in place are 44 x 106m3 of oil, of which 10.3 x 106m3 of oil (82% of recoverable reserves) have been produced (ERCB, 2008). This study evaluates the depositional and diagenetic controls on reservoir quality within the Doe Creek at Valhalla Field in order to identify reservoir-prone facies and predict their distribution in wells lacking core. Analysis of core and well log data indicates that intervals of highest reservoir quality are preferentially associated with thin (meter-scale) sandstone bodies deposited in proximal lower and upper shoreface environments. Based upon the relationships of facies to deep resistivity, mud content as gamma-ray derived shale volume, and density-neutron porosity separation within cemented zones, a well log transform was created that successfully predicts the distribution of reservoir-prone facies and calcite cement.

This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good-quality geothermal reservoirs displaying secondary porosity exist on the upper Texas coast (Brazoria County), site of the Pleasant Bayou No. 1 and No. 2 wells, and are attributed to a moderately stable mineral assemblage, normal geothermal gradients, and low in situ pH. Major authigenic minerals are calcite, quartz, and kaolinite. Detrital feldspar has been extensively albitized at depth. Major diagenetic events overlapped, occurring in the general order-precipitation of calcite, formation of quartz overgrowths, albitization, leaching of calcite to form secondary porosity, and precipitation of kaolinite. Seventeen Brazoria County water analyses including two from the Pleasant Bayou No. 2 well were thermodynamically tested. Predictions based on equilibrium thermodynamics add new insight on mineral stabilities and are consistent with the paragenetic sequence developed from petrographic data. Early precipitation of calcite at shallow depths of burial is predicted. Low temperture and low in situ pH explain the general absence of chlorite. The use of solution-mineral equilibria as a predictor of reservoir quality is inconclusive, but well-defined clustering of waters indicates that identification of regional trends will probably be possible. Shallow waters may be the key to predicting reservoir quality at depth.
