This volume contains the full texts of 175 acts issued under the seal of King Alexander III, together with notes on a further 155 "e;lost acts"e; that survive only in notices. These acts, many of which have never been published before, have been collected from a variety of archives in Scotland, England, Belgium and France. The Introduction examines the administrative contexts of the later thirteenth century in which the royal chancery drafted and authenticated charters, brieves and other written instruments, and discusses the varied sources from which the collection is compiled. The texts include full Latin transcriptions and detailed English-language summaries of the contents of each act, together with a series of notes and comments on context and significance. By drawing together both original archive sources and widely scattered published sources, the volume offers a unique opportunity to understand how Scottish government and administration operated in the key period before the reign of Robert Bruce. The Regesta Regum Scottorum series has already made available in print a definitive edition of the written acts of several of the medieval kings of Scotland. It remains the standard reference for Scottish, British and European scholars interested in the history of royal chanceries, the evolution of medieval royal government and the growth of literate modes of expression in the Middle Ages.
Book Synopsis Common Law, Civil Law, and Colonial Law by : William Eves
Download or read book Common Law, Civil Law, and Colonial Law written by William Eves and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common Law, Civil Law, and Colonial Law builds upon the legal historian F.W. Maitland's famous observation that history involves comparison, and that those who ignore every system but their own 'hardly came in sight of the idea of legal history'. The extensive introduction addresses the intellectual challenges posed by comparative approaches to legal history. This is followed by twelve essays derived from papers delivered at the 24th British Legal History Conference. These essays explore patterns in legal norms, processes, and practice across an exceptionally broad chronological and geographical range. Carefully selected to provide a network of inter-connections, they contribute to our better understanding of legal history by combining depth of analysis with historical contextualization. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Download or read book Leper Knights written by David Marcombe and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most unusual contributions to the crusading era was the idea of the leper knight - a response to the scourge of leprosy and the shortage of fighting men which beset the Latin kingdom in the twelfth century. The Order of St Lazarus, which saw the idea become a reality, founded establishments across Western Europe to provide essential support for its hospitaller and military vocations. This book explores the important contribution of the English branch of the order, which by 1300 managed a considerable estate from its chief preceptory at Burton Lazars in Leicestershire. Time proved the English Lazarites to be both tough and tenacious, if not always preoccupied with the care of lepers. Following the fall of Acre in 1291 they endured a period of bitter internal conflict, only to emerge reformed and reinvigorated in the fifteenth century. Though these late medieval knights were very different from their twelfth-century predecessors, some ideologies lingered on, though subtly readapted to the requirements of a new age, until the order was finally suppressed by Henry VIII in 1544. The modern refoundation of the order, a charitable institution, dates from 1962. The book uses both documentary and archaeological evidence to provide the first ever account of this little-understood crusading order.DAVID MARCOMBE is Director of the Centre for Local History, University of Nottingham.

Book Synopsis The Declaration of Arbroath by : G. W. S. Barrow
Download or read book The Declaration of Arbroath written by G. W. S. Barrow and published by Society Antiquaries Scotland. This book was released on 2003 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Declaration of Arbroath took the form of a letter or petition sent from the Scottish nobles to Pope John XXII, dated April 6th 1320. In it the nobles argued for their claim to independence and sovereignty under Robert the Bruce, promising obedience and allegiance, and requesting to be left alone by the English. This famous document was not only significant in medieval times but it is said to have been the model for the American Declaration of Independence, bringing its importance and relevance up to the present day. These seven essays are taken from a conference held in Arbroath in 3000 with contributors discussing the Declaration from historical, ideological, architectural and environmental perspectives. The book opens with an English translation of the original Latin version of the Declaration.
Book Synopsis Kind Neighbours: Scottish Saints and Society in the Later Middle Ages by : Tom Turpie
Download or read book Kind Neighbours: Scottish Saints and Society in the Later Middle Ages written by Tom Turpie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kind Neighbours Tom Turpie explores devotion to Scottish saints and their shrines in the later middle ages. He provides fresh insight into the role played by these saints in the legal and historical arguments for Scottish independence, and the process by which first Andrew, and later Ninian, were embraced as patron saints of the Scots. Kind Neighbours also explains the appeal of the most popular Scottish saints of the period and explores the relationship between regional shrines and the Scottish monarchy. Rejecting traditional interpretations based around church-led patriotism or crown patronage, Turpie draws on a wide range of sources to explain how religious, political and environmental changes in the later middle ages shaped devotion to the saints in Scotland.
