Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the centre of the Rosicrucian manifestos was a call for ‘general reformation’. In Reformation, Revolution, Renovation, the first book-length study of this topic, Lyke de Vries demonstrates the unique position of the Rosicrucian call for reform in the transformative context of the early seventeenth century. The manifestos, commonly interpreted as either Lutheran or esoteric, are here portrayed as revolutionary mission statements which broke dramatically with Luther’s reform ideals. Their call for reform instead resembles a variety of late medieval and early modern dissenting traditions as well as the heterodox movement of Paracelsianism. Emphasising the universal character of the Rosicrucian proposal for change, this new genealogy of the core idea sheds fresh light on the vexed question of the manifestos’ authorship and helps explain their tumultuous reception by both those who welcomed and those who deplored them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramism and the Reformation of Method explores the popular early modern movement of Ramism and its ambitious attempt to transform Church and society. It considers the relation of Ramism to Reformed Christianity and its development as a divine logic attuned to understanding both Scripture and the world. In doing so, it reveals how Ramists rejected the notion of a philosophy or worldview independent of God and sought to encompass everything under an overarching Christian philosophy indebted to Franciscan ideals. The supreme goal of the Ramists was the remaking of the world in the image of the Triune God.

Book excerpt: This book reexamines the historical thinking of Liang Qichao (1873-1929), one of the few modern Chinese thinkers and cultural critics whose appreciation of the question of modernity was based on first-hand experience of the world space in which China had to function as a nation-state. It seeks to demonstrate that Liang was not only a profoundly paradigmatic modern Chinese intellectual but also an imaginative thinker of worldwide significance. By tracing the changes in Liang's conception of history, the author shows that global space inspired both Liang's longing for modernity and his critical reconceptualization of modern history. Spatiality, or the mode of determining spatial organization and relationships, offers a new interpretive category for understanding the stages in Liang's historical thinking. Liang's historical thinking culminated in a global imaginary of difference, which became most evident in the shift from his earlier proposal for a uniform national history to one that mapped "cultural history." His reaffirmation of spatiality, a critical concept overshadowed by the modernist obsession with time and history, made it both necessary and possible for him to redesign the project of modernity. Finally, the author suggests that the reconciliation of anthropological space with historical time that Liang achieved makes him abundantly contemporary with our own time, both inextricably modern and postmodern.

Book excerpt: Few periods of English history have been so subject to `revisionism' as the Tudors and Stuarts. This volume offers a full introduction to the complex historiographical debates currently raging about politics and religion in early modern England. It * draws together thirteen articles culled from familiar and also less accessible sources * embraces revisionist and counter-revisionist viewpoints * combines controversial works on both politics and religion * covers Tudor as well as early Stuart England * includes helpful glossary, explanatory headnotes and suggestions for further reading. These carefully edited and introduced essays draw on the new evidence of newsletters and ballads and ritual, as well as the more traditional sources, to offer a new and broader understanding of this transformative era of English history.

Book excerpt: Strokes of genius come rarely in life. This is one of those. APOCATASTASIS* is an extraordinary work. In simple, clear language, Lips takes the reader to a deeper understanding of the planets, their dignities and debilities, and on to a "world formula" that brings order to chaos and that will change our world-view. The experienced teacher Heisenberg would only examine the work of his pupils when the result was simple and aesthetically beautiful. The result presented by Lips is simple and beautiful. His astrological research has enabled him to discover the law that thinkers of all cultures have been searching for since time immemorial. The principles of his symmetrical theory are now seen to be inevitable. * not to be confused with the Christian or Stoic meaning of this term, is the astrological teaching of the eternal cycle of the celestial rulers (planets) and their rulership over all things and the zodiac signs.

Book excerpt: Originally in five volumes this history of the Protestant Reformation still finds ready acceptance. As a popular work on the Reformation, it has had immense circulation in several languages. d’Aubigné’s description of the prominent events and personalities of the Reformation is marked by a lively style of writing, a certain picturesqueness, and powerful word painting. It captures the heartbeats of the Reformation. Characters such as Erasmus, Luther, Melanchthon, Farel, Calvin, Tetzel, and Eck sprint to life. Their personality traits and their roles in the drama of the Reformation are captured in lively detail.
