Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the classic mirror test served as a portal for scientists to explore questions of self-awareness Since the late eighteenth century, scientists have placed subjects—humans, infants, animals, and robots—in front of mirrors in order to look for signs of self-recognition. Mirrors served as the possible means for answering the question: What makes us human? In The Mirror and the Mind, Katja Guenther traces the history of the mirror self-recognition test, exploring how researchers from a range of disciplines—psychoanalysis, psychiatry, developmental and animal psychology, cybernetics, anthropology, and neuroscience—came to read the peculiar behaviors elicited by mirrors. Investigating the ways mirrors could lead to both identification and misidentification, Guenther looks at how such experiments ultimately failed to determine human specificity. The mirror test was thrust into the limelight when Charles Darwin challenged the idea that language sets humans apart. Thereafter the mirror, previously a recurrent if marginal scientific tool, became dominant in attempts to demarcate humans from other animals. But because researchers could not rely on language to determine what their nonspeaking subjects were experiencing, they had to come up with significant innovations, including notation strategies, testing protocols, and the linking of scientific theories across disciplines. From the robotic tortoises of Grey Walter and the mark test of Beulah Amsterdam and Gordon Gallup, to anorexia research and mirror neurons, the mirror test offers a window into the emergence of such fields as biology, psychology, psychiatry, animal studies, cognitive science, and neuroscience. The Mirror and the Mind offers an intriguing history of experiments in self-awareness and the advancements of the human sciences across more than a century.

Book excerpt: "Mirrors is a collection of interconnected essays that recount the author's being adopted as a young child and then spending his boyhood growing up in rural Louisiana. He writes candidly about his troubled teenage years, experimenting with drugs and alcohol, then dropping out of school and working odd jobs. While most of the collection deals with the author's youth, the collection ultimately builds to the final piece, which describes his unexpected discovery of his biological father after taking a DNA test"--

Book excerpt: Of all human inventions, the mirror is perhaps the one most closely connected to our own consciousness. As our first technology for contemplation of the self, the mirror is arguably as important an invention as the wheel. Mirror Mirror is the fascinating story of the mirror's invention, refinement, and use in an astonishing range of human activities -- from the fantastic mirrored rooms that wealthy Romans created for their orgies to the mirror's key role in the use and understanding of light. Pendergrast spins tales of the 2,500year mystery of whether Archimedes and his "burning mirror" really set faraway Roman ships on fire; the medieval Venetian glassmakers, who perfected the technique of making large, flat mirrors from clear glass and for whom any attempt to leave their cloistered island was punishable by death; Isaac Newton, whose experiments with sunlight on mirrors once left him blinded for three days; the artist David Hockney, who holds controversial ideas about Renaissance artists and their use of optical devices; and George Ellery Hale, the manic-depressive astronomer and telescope enthusiast who inspired (and gave his name to) the twentieth century's largest ground-based telescope. Like mirrors themselves, Mirror Mirror is a book of endless wonder and fascination.

Now, in this dazzling collection of nine entirely original essays, written with a rare combination of give and sharpness, wit and fearlessness, she delves into the forces that warp our vision, demonstrating an unparalleled stylistic potency and critical dexterity. Trick Mirror is an enlightening, unforgettable trip through the river of self-delusion that surges just beneath the surface of our lives. This is a book about the incentives that shape us, and about how hard it is to see ourselves clearly through a culture that revolves around the self. In each essay, Tolentino writes about a cultural prism: the rise of the nightmare social internet; the advent of scamming as the definitive millennial ethos; the literary heroine’s journey from brave to blank to bitter; the punitive dream of optimization, which insists that everything, including our bodies, should become more efficient and beautiful until we die. Gleaming with Tolentino’s sense of humor and capacity to elucidate the impossibly complex in an instant, and marked by her desire to treat the reader with profound honesty, Trick Mirror is an instant classic of the worst decade yet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of emigrants to the Anglo-American world, particularly from former British colonies, contains overt and subtle references to the differences in lifestyle and culture they encounter upon entry into their host countries. They are faced not only with a serious re-evaluation of their own values and beliefs, but also with an immediate delegation to the marginal "other" of western society. This decentration of a previously whole, identifiable self often produces a state of incessant anxiety that seeks stability through the establishment of a new identity that conforms to perceived expectations of the dominant society as a condition of acceptance. This search for a new identity gives birth to controlling strategies that direct the transformation of identity and behavior. Each of the three authors discussed in this book has taken a different approach to dealing with issues of marginality and otherness in a culture of Eurocentric dominance. While Salman Rushdie's works reflect alienation from, and denigration of, traditions and beliefs of the culture of his origin, Bharati Mukherjee's approach to adaptation in the Western culture is marked by an affinity towards hybridization and change while both preserving, to some degree, traditions and beliefs from her culture of origin and demanding as well change in the host culture. Kamala Markandaya differs from both Rushdie and Mukherjee in professing an affirmation of spirituality and mythical beliefs while nevertheless adapting to the West. The respective strategies of the three authors are broadly characterized as mimicry, hybridization, and devotion.

Praise for Trick Mirror "Jia Tolentino is the best young essayist at work in the United States, one I've consistently admired and learned from, and I was exhilarated to get a whole lot of her at once in Trick Mirror. In these nine essays, she rethinks troubling ingredients of modern life, from the internet to mind-altering drugs to wedding culture. All through the book, single sentences flash like lightning to show something familiar in a startling way, but she also builds extended arguments with her usual, unusual blend of lyricism and skepticism. In the end, we have a picture of America that was as missing as it was needed."--Rebecca Solnit, author of Men Explain Things to Me

Book excerpt: This book is a hard-hitting, real insight into the life of a boy growing up in a South American country in the 1980s and 1990s. Growing up without biological parents, the author takes you on an unbelievable journey of struggles, challenges and then discovery and re-emergence. It deals with harrowing subjects such as child abuse, rape and the crippling issue of loneliness and other mental health related issues but also builds up to a sense of self-worth and reflection. We’ve all been there and have bad experiences which have affected us in some way so it is easy to see that we need to take a good look at ourselves, decide on the course of action and then execute it. We can all relate to the sentiment of “Mirror, Signal, and Move on.”
