Book Synopsis Nietzsche's Political Economy by : Dmitri G. Safronov
Download or read book Nietzsche's Political Economy written by Dmitri G. Safronov and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safronov’s Nietzsche’s Political Economy is a pioneering appraisal of Nietzsche’s critique of industrial culture and its unfolding crisis. The author contends that Nietzsche remains unique in conceptualizing the upheavals of modern political economy in terms of the crisis of its governing values. Nietzsche scrutinises the norms which, not only preside over the unfathomable build-up in debt, the proliferation of meaningless, impersonal slavery and the rise of increasingly repressive social control systems, but inevitably set these precarious tendencies of modern political economy on a collision course liable to culminate in an unprecedented human and environmental catastrophe. Safronov explores the core themes of Nietzsche’s political economy—debt, slavery, and the division of labour—with reference to the influential views of Adam Smith and Karl Marx, as well as against the backdrop of the Long Depression (1873–1896), the first truly international crisis of industrial capitalism, during which most of Nietzsche’s work was completed. In Nietzsche’s assessment, modern political economy is predicated on the valuations that diminish humankind’s prospects and harm the planet’s future by consistently enfeebling the present, as long as there is profit to be made from it. Nietzsche’s critical insight, which challenges the most fundamental tenet of modern economics and finance, is that in order to build a stronger and intrinsically more valuable future in lieu of simply speculating on it, as though the liberal Promised Land could descend upon us like the manna from heaven at the wave of an invisible hand [of the market], it is necessary to walk from the future we dare to envisage resolutely back to the present we inhabit to determine what demands achieving such a vision would impose upon us, instead of embellishing the ‘here and now’ by cynically discounting the future to the [net] value of the present while disparaging, disowning and rewriting the past to unburden ourselves of its troubling legacy, as we continue to frivolously squander its capital to the alluring tunes of the ‘sirens who in the marketplace sing to us of the future’. The enabling mechanism for changing our valuing perspectives, Nietzsche tells us, lies dormant in us and it must be unlocked before it is too late.

Book excerpt: INQUISITION Set in the time of paranoia in American politics, Inquisition, examines the power game in which innocent lives face ruin when they become entangled in a politician's cynical ambition. It explores the corrosion of human relationships arising from egotism and the relentless pursuit of power. The protagonist, Zachary Taylor Harris, a powerful politician, plays a deadly game of Russian Roulette with the lives of anyone entering his orbit. To keep the lid on his secret he must appear to possess all of the knowledge and certitude, which comes with being a senior member of Congress and chairman of its most powerful investigative committee. Manipulation and chicanery are his tools for dominating anyone in his way. The cast of characters includes: - His wife, a woman of intelligence and passion, whose fortune has supported his career, but who now stands as an obstacle to his ambition, - A senior State Department officer with unorthodox political views and his avant-garde wife, a gifted abstract expressionist, who stumble into his path and become perfect targets in his cover-up scheme, - A cunning and powerful bureaucrat, who sees opportunity and personal advantage in a new investigative scenario, - His beautiful and sultry mistress, who loves him, but naively becomes a pawn in his power game, - A crusading young antagonist who closes in on the well-kept secret, - A canny, veteran newspaperman who understands power and its limitations, and puts the machinery of justice in motion, - A disgruntled detective whose career swings 180-degrees when he turns a humiliating defeat into victory, - The incorruptible Speaker of the House, the one man he cannot afford to alienate, who upholds the Constitution and the rule of law against his scheming ambition. The author employs his understanding of Congress, Capitol Hill and the many dimensions and nuances of the American political process to weave a story of power, ambition, courage, love and other virtues and vices imparted by the game of politics.

Book Synopsis British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977 by : Barry J. Faulk
Download or read book British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977 written by Barry J. Faulk and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Rock Modernism, 1967-1977 explains how the definitive British rock performers of this epoch aimed, not at the youthful rebellion for which they are legendary, but at a highly self-conscious project of commenting on the business in which they were engaged. They did so by ironically appropriating the traditional forms of Victorian music hall and the result was a symbolically charged form whose main purpose was to unsettle the hierarchy that set traditional popular culture above the new medium.

Book Synopsis Romanticism, Radicalism, and the Press by : Stephen C. Behrendt
Download or read book Romanticism, Radicalism, and the Press written by Stephen C. Behrendt and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although literature has traditionally been conceived in terms of a real or implied association with a cultural elite, a body of work exists that does not deliberately try to associate itself with that audience - that may in fact purposely oppose or resist that audience - but which nevertheless exerts a strong influence on what comes to be regarded as literature. This work specifically examines the relations that developed among British authors of the Romantic period and the Radical culture whose oppositional discourse - both in written text, and in extra-literary material - is one of the most striking aspects of the political and social life of the period. The volume broadens the field of materials to include other aspects of writing culture, including reviews, trial transcripts, philological studies, propaganda, and verbal and visual satire and parody.

Download or read book Thomas Paine written by J. C. D. Clark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was England's greatest revolutionary: no other reformer was as actively involved in events of the scale of the American and French Revolutions, and none wrote such best-selling texts with the impact of Common Sense and Rights of Man. No one else combined the roles of activist and theorist, or did so in the 'age of revolutions', fundamental as it was to the emergence of the 'modern world'. But his fame meant that he was taken up and reinterpreted for current use by successive later commentators and politicians, so that the 'historic Paine' was too often obscured by the 'usable Paine'. J. C. D. Clark explains Paine against a revised background of early- and mid-eighteenth-century England. He argues that Paine knew and learned less about events in America and France than was once thought. He de-attributes a number of publications, and passages, hitherto assumed to have been Paine's own, and detaches him from a number of causes (including anti-slavery, women's emancipation, and class action) with which he was once associated. Paine's formerly obvious association with the early origin and long-term triumph of natural rights, republicanism, and democracy needs to be rethought. As a result, Professor Clark offers a picture of radical and reforming movements as more indebted to the initiatives of large numbers of men and women in fast-evolving situations than to the writings of a few individuals who framed lasting, and eventually triumphant, political discourses.

This book was released on 2005-08-30 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When Korea's Place in the Sun first appeared, Bruce Cumings argued that Korea had endured a "fractured, shattered twentieth century." The new century has seen South Korea flourish after a restructuring of its political economy, and North Korea suffer through a famine that has cost the lives of millions of people. The United States continues to play an important role on the Korean peninsula, from the Clinton administration overseeing the first real hints of reunification to the Bush administration confronting a renewal of nuclear threats. On both sides Korea seems poised to continue its fractured existence on into the new century, with potential ramifications for the rest of the world." "For those who need a grounding in the tempestuous history surrounding Korea, or a context in which to understand its role in current global politics, this updated edition of Korea's Place in the Sun is a must read."--BOOK JACKET.
