Book excerpt: Reflections of a mind is an observation of the mind and heart. An idea that plays around our pre-beliefs of society and our mind-made systems. It's a concoction of poetry and perspective thinking. You'll experience a modest journey of my thoughts like a ship or a barge, as you may feel. It’s about a roughness and the beauty of life. A large part of this attempt is merely to show you the power of the mind and its thought. This is for everyone who believes in mind matters and its command on the wellness of our existence. It’s about seeing powers and the misbehaviours of our thoughts. Pain, Pleasure, Conflict, and Love. All of this has one origin, The Mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's so special about music? We experience it internally, yet at the same time it is highly social. Music engages our cognitive/affective and sensory systems. We use music to communicate with one another--and even with other species--the things that we cannot express through language. Music is both ancient and ever evolving. Without music, our world is missing something essential. In Reflections on the Musical Mind, Jay Schulkin offers a social and behavioral neuroscientific explanation of why music matters. His aim is not to provide a grand, unifying theory. Instead, the book guides the reader through the relevant scientific evidence that links neuroscience, music, and meaning. Schulkin considers how music evolved in humans and birds, how music is experienced in relation to aesthetics and mathematics, the role of memory in musical expression, the role of music in child and social development, and the embodied experience of music through dance. He concludes with reflections on music and well-being. Reflections on the Musical Mind is a unique and valuable tour through the current research on the neuroscience of music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Duncan (1919-1988), one of the major postwar American poets, was an adulated figure among his contemporaries, including Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Denise Levertov. Lawrence Ferlinghetti remarked that Duncan "had the best ear this side of Dante." His stature is increasingly recognized as comparable to that of Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, H.D., and Louis Zukofsky. Like his poetry, Duncan's conversation is generative and multi-directional, pushing out the boundaries of discourse. His recorded reflections are a means of discovery and exploration, and whether talking with a college student or a fellow poet, he was fully engaged and open to new thoughts as they emerged. The exchanges in this book are exciting and lively. His vast and wide-ranging knowledge offers readers an increased understanding of the interrelations of the arts, history, psychology, and science; those who would like to learn about Duncan's own life, his bravery in being an out gay man well before Stonewall, and his friendships with fellow writers, such as Charles Olson, Jack Spicer, and Kenneth Rexroth, will find this book richly rewarding. The six volumes of Duncan's collected writings are being issued by the University of California Press. The collected interviews are an indispensable companion to these books, providing an in-depth exposition of his poetics, which center on the belief that the poem is "a medium for the life of the spirit." In A Poet's Mind, he describes the genesis of some of his works, including that of books, essays, and individual poems, and also discusses gay love and life, along with the many diverse influences on his work. Ducan's fertile creative mind is also evident in these conversations: often coming back to Ezra Pound in these conversations, he gives one of the clearest expositions to be found anywhere on the scope and meaning of The Cantos. This volume also includes a number of photographs never before published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triumphant Reflections of the Mind Poems & Essays “To be or not to be? That is the question.” Shakespeare had posed this question which led me to this exploration of existence vs. non-existence. One way to look at existence is by persistence, after being recognized as a non-existent, human being. Persistence is used as a vehicle through which one is transported to a reality that they feel is true. Existence involves the recognized five senses, i.e. feeling, touching, seeing (viewing), tasting, and hearing. When acknowledging these five senses, one is able to function as a evolutionary human being leaning toward an international understanding of the benefits mankind received through God, our Father. However, one can be self-actualizing by using the senses available to one by the moment he needs the senses. If, for some reason all five senses are not available, then compensation is brought to the forefront by making the other senses more intense, thereby allowing for the maximization of a unified body functioning at its fullest. Constantly reviewing, applying, and directing self, to maximize each sense in accordance with his conscience – leads to the betterment of society. This betterment can be seen as either good or excellent. Mediocrity has no place to focus on the purest of quests. At this present writing, it is felt that there are many loopholes in the systems developing a quasi or even a false sense of well being.. is it is the thought process of the brain and its motivation to excel or fail, that might allow for a leaning of the masses to entice honest and demonstrative leadership Leadership that is existing, to allow its citizens the fullest benefit for societal gain, could occur if the masses are led by ethical, persuasive, and pure reasons. For decisions made by a person in power, to allow the consideration of an architectural mind building a peaceful environment in the land to which he rules –– either by a Republic or not. Is one dilemma in mankind’s pursuit of peace. PAX Praise God for our diversity and welcoming new ideas! Jeanne Brohl

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in Jeffrey Hopkins' valuable series on the Mind-Only School of Buddhism and a focal description of it in Dzong-Ka-ba's The Essence of Eloquence. Dzong-Ka-ba (1357-1419) is generally regarded as one of the greatest Tibetan philosophers, and his Mind-Only discourse on emptiness is considered a landmark in Buddhist philosophy. In Volume I, Emptiness in the Mind-Only School of Buddhism, Hopkins provided a translation of the introduction and the section on the Mind-Only School in The Essence of Eloquence. The present volume places this enigmatic and influential exposition in its historical and philosophical contexts. Reflections on Reality conveys the intellectual vibrancy of the different cultural interpretations of this text and expands the key philosophical issues it addresses. Hopkins, one of the leading scholarly voices in Tibetan studies, begins this volume with two introductory chapters contextualizing Tibetan scholarship in general. He then goes on to discuss in detail the religious significance of the central topic of the three natures in the Mind-Only School. He also considers various views on the status of reality, including the doctrine of other-emptiness promulgated by the fourteenth century Jo-nang savant Shay-rap-gyel-tsen. Presenting accurate and insightful translations of a large amount of material that has never been available in English before, he shows how these topics have been debated among scholars in Tibet over six centuries. Comparing these with presentations in Europe, Japan, and the United States today, he created a lively conversation between normally disparate voices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reflections in Poetry" Reflections in Poetry was first thought about when I was working down in the Gulf of Mexico. Twelve hours a day five days a week I use to write during my lunch break or back at the motel. I put together some material in a legal pad and left everything in the Motel under the mattress. When I relocated back to Sumter, SC it was very hard getting started, with so many things on my mind. I asked God to give me the peace of mind that I needed to put my thoughts on paper. I stayed up one night until four in the morning writing. I needed that to get a lot of stuff off my chest and off my mind. I really enjoyed putting Reflections in Poetry together, it reflects on those that have passed on good people whose memories I'll always treasure and will never forget. Friends that I met over the years our paths crossed and we connected platonically. They inspired me in their own unique way to write about them in poetry. Reflections in Poetry are collections of treasured thoughts from my heart to yours. Enjoy Glenndell Chatmon

Have you ever felt split between nations and cultures and are your language skills so brilliant that you can’t speak one language perfectly because of the many you are able to speak? The poetry collection ”A Bright Mind, A Dark Reflection” is a book for you if you have felt completely incomplete or trapped in a world where you don’t belong. The poems are a mix of deep imagination and real life-experiences. In the book the unique mind is in focus; the weak, brave and powerful mind; as Ghazal Meer writes about the memory in a poem: “I wonder how I still breath, how my heart still beats, and how my mind still is capable of functioning when it remembers everything that has happened”
