This is important because in practice, obtaining error-free CSI is impossible due to measurement errors, quantization errors and many other sources of errors. The main bulk of this thesis focuses on the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems, with a chapter being dedicated to the distributed wireless communication systems (DWCS). In the study of the MIMO system, we make use of the estimated CSI and the statistics of the estimation errors to design receiver and to jointly design transmitter-receiver in order to minimize the symbol error rate (SER) performance. Our proposed receiver is known as the robust sphere decoder; it is near-optimal in the SER sense and has significantly reduced complexity when compared to the exact maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder. Our proposed joint transmitter-receiver scheme is an adaptive scheme which adapts to estimated CSI and error statistics. The proposed scheme reduces the computational complexity of decoding whilst improving the SER performance over the best decoding scheme (exact ML decoding) without transmitter CSI. In the study of the DWCS, we consider the problem of minimizing transmit power in the downlink scenario. We account for the power used in both channel estimation and data transmission, We formulate the problem and propose solution strategies for both single-user and multi-user cases. We demonstrate that the proposed schemes significantly outperform the baseline scheme of equal power allocation.

Relaying strategies can mainly be classified as amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF). The AF relaying technique imposes lower signal processing complexity and latency; therefore, it is preferred in many operational applications. In this regard, transceiver design becomes crucial to fully leverage the benefits of multi-user MIMO relay systems. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop new transceiver design approaches for multi-user MIMO relay networks from the perspectives of robustness, energy efficiency and secrecy. First, we propose new transceiver design approaches for a multi-user MIMO AF relay network. It is well known that the performance of wireless relaying is significantly deteriorated under realistic conditions such as imperfect channel state information (CSI) for radio links involved in the transmission. To address this issue, two popular CSI error models, namely, the statistical and norm-bounded models, are considered. Based on these models, a robust joint transceiver design framework relying on modern convex optimization theory is proposed. The resulting design algorithms lead to a relaying performance that is notably less sensitive to different types of CSI errors, as demonstrated by the simulation results. Then, we address the energy efficient design of a multi-user cooperative relay network. Assuming a flexible centralized network structure where relays can be adaptively activated/deactivated, we formulate the problem as a quality-of-service (QoS)-based network energy minimization problem that facilitates joint relay selection and transceiver optimization. An iterative solution based on re-weighted L1-norm minimization along with a block-coordinate descent (BCD)-type algorithm is proposed and its convergence properties investigated. The new algorithm is shown to provide a significantly lower energy consumption of the relay network than that required by a conventional relaying scheme. Finally, we propose a secure transceiver design approach for an MIMO relay network in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. Under a realistic assumption of imperfect knowledge of the eavesdropper channels, we formulate the relay transceiver design as a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) maximization subject to robust secrecy constraints. To solve the resulting non-convex problem, a penalized difference-of-convex (DC) algorithm is developed and its properties analyzed. Results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the secrecy of the relay-aided transmission at the physical layer." --

Abstract: In downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, different users, even multiple data streams serving one user, might require different quality-of-services (QoS). The transceiver should allocate resources to different users aiming at satisfying their QoS requirements. In order to design the optimal transceiver, channel state information is necessary. In practice, channel state information has to to be estimated, and estimation error is unavoidable. Therefore, robust transceiver design, which takes the channel estimation uncertainty into consideration, is important. For the previous robust transceiver designs, bounded estimation errors or Gaussian estimation errors were assumed. However, if there exists unknown distributed interference, the distribution of the channel estimation error cannot be modeled accurately a priori. Therefore, in this thesis, we investigate the robust transceiver design problem in downlink MU-MIMO system under probabilistic QoS constraints with arbitrary distributed channel estimation error. To tackle the probabilistic QoS constraints under arbitrary distributed channel estimation error, the transceiver design problem is expressed in terms of worst-case probabilistic constraints. Two methods are then proposed to solve the worst-case problem. Firstly, the Chebyshev inequality based method is proposed. After the worst-case probabilistic constraint is approximated by the Chebyshev inequality, an iteration between two convex subproblems is proposed to solve the approximated problem. The convergence of the iterative method is proved, the implementation issues and the computational complexity are discussed. Secondly, in order to solve the worst-case probabilistic constraint more accurately, a novel duality method is proposed. After a series of reformulations based on duality and S-Lemma, the worst-case statistically constrained problem is transformed into a deterministic finite constrained problem, with strong duality guaranteed. The resulting problem is then solved by a convergence-guaranteed iteration between two subproblems. Although one of the subproblems is still nonconvex, it can be solved by a tight semidefinite relaxation (SDR). Simulation results show that, compared to the non-robust method, the QoS requirement is satisfied by both proposed algorithms. Furthermore, among the two proposed methods, the duality method shows a superior performance in transmit power, while the Chebyshev method demonstrates a lower computational complexity. Book excerpt: Massive MIMO (multiple-input–multiple-output) is a multi-antenna technology for cellular wireless communication, where the base station uses a large number of individually controllable antennas to multiplex users spatially. This technology can provide a high spectral efficiency. One of its main challenges is the immense hardware complexity and cost of all the radio chains in the base station. To make massive MIMO commercially viable, inexpensive, low-complexity hardware with low linearity has to be used, which inherently leads to more signal distortion. This thesis investigates how the degenerated linearity of some of the main components—power amplifiers, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and low-noise amplifiers—affects the performance of the system, with respect to data rate, power consumption and out-of-band radiation. The main results are: Spatial processing can reduce PAR (peak-to-average ratio) of the transmit signals in the downlink to as low as 0B; this, however, does not necessarily reduce power consumption. In environments with isotropic fading, one-bit ADCs lead to a reduction in effective signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) of 4dB in the uplink and four-bit ADCs give a performance close to that of an unquantized system. An analytical expression for the radiation pattern of the distortion from nonlinear power amplifiers is derived. It shows how the distortion is beamformed to some extent, that its gain never is greater than that of the desired signal, and that the gain of the distortion is reduced with a higher number of served users and a higher number of channel taps. Nonlinear low-noise amplifiers give rise to distortion that partly combines coherently and limits the possible SINR. It is concluded that spatial processing with a large number of antennas reduces the impact of hardware distortion in most cases. As long as proper attention is paid to the few sources of coherent distortion, the hardware complexity can be reduced in massive MIMO base stations to overcome the hardware challenge and make massive MIMO commercial reality. I miljöer med isotrop fädning leder enbits-AD-omvandlare till 4dB lägre signal-till-interferens-och-brus-förhållande i upplänken, och fyrabits-AD-omvandlare ger en prestanda nära den ett system utan kvantisering kan uppnå. Ett analytiskt uttryck för strålningsmönstret för distorsionen från icke-linjära effektförstärkare härleds. Det visar hur distorsionen till viss del lobformas, att dess förstärkning aldrig är starkare än förstärkningen för den önskade signalen och att distorsionens förstärkning minskar med ett högre antal betjänade användare och ett högre antal kanaltappar. Icke-linjära lågbrusförstärkare ger upphov distorsion som delvis kombinerar koherent och begränsar det möjliga signal-till-brus-och-interferens-förhållandet. Slutsatsen är att rumslig signalbehandling med ett stort antal antenner reducerar hårdvarudistorsionens inverkan i de flesta fall. Book excerpt: This book deals with the optimization-based joint design of the transmit and receive filters in MIMO broadcast channel in which the user terminals may be equipped with several antenna elements. Furthermore, the maximum performance of the system in the high power regime as well as the set of all feasible quality-of-service requirements is analyzed. First, a fundamental duality is derived that holds between the MIMO broadcast channel and virtual MIMO multiple access channel. This duality construct allows for the efficient solution of problems originally posed in the broadcast channel in the dual domain where a possibly hidden convexity can often be revealed. On the basis of the established duality result, the gradient-projection algorithm is introduced as a tool to solve constrained optimization problems to global optimality under certain conditions. The gradient-projection tool is then applied to solving the weighted sum rate maximization problem which is a central optimization that arises in any network utility maximization. In the high power regime, a simple characterization of the obtained performance becomes possible due to the fact that the weighted sum rate utility converges to an affine asymptote in the logarithmic power domain. We find closed form expressions for these asymptotes which allows for a quantification of the asymptotic rate loss that linear transceivers have to face with respect to dirty paper coding. In the last part, we answer the fundamental question of feasibility in quality-of-service based optimizations with inelastic traffic that features strict delay constraints. Under the assumption of linear transceivers, not every set of quality-of-service requirements might be feasible making the power minimization problem with given lower bound constraints on the rate for example infeasible in these cases. We derive a complete description of the quality-of-service feasibility region for arbitrary channel matrices.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have gained a significant importance in modern wireless communication systems. MIMO offers many dimensional advantages that can be utilized to boost capacity and coverage without utilizing more bandwidth or transmit power. The introduction of MIMO systems with large antenna arrays (also known as massive MIMO) and the use of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands are considered some of the key enabling technologies in the 5th generation of cellular systems to satisfy high data rate demands. However, when it comes to hardware implementation, massive MIMO systems with a large number of antennas face some challenges. Each antenna element is driven by a dedicated RF-chain; therefore, the RF-cost increases with the number of antennas. Each RF chain in a MIMO transmitter includes a power amplifier (PA), a mixer and a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). These components are expensive and power-consuming. Consequently, the cost will increase if the number of antennas grows. Reduced-cost MIMO systems have been drawing attention lately. In this dissertation, the hardware of a reduced-complexity and cost MIMO transmitter utilizing a single RF chain is presented. The RF chain includes a linear, low-cost, and energy-efficient PA and without the need for a mixer or DAC. This MIMO transmitter can convert digital signals in the baseband to the RF domain. In this MIMO transmitter, antennas are fed by two-port networks called load modulators. Load modulators are diode-based RF circuits that generate the desired outputs. The MIMO transmitter is designed at 3 GHz. The MIMO transmitter is capable of generating 64-QAM constellations at its output ports. This MIMO transmitter is perfectly suitable to operate with current MIMO receivers.

Book excerpt: Multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO), which transmits multiple data streams via multiple antenna elements, is one of the most attractive technologies in the wireless communication field. Its extension, called ‘massive MIMO’ or ‘large-scale MIMO’, in which base station has over one hundred of the antenna elements, is now seen as a promising candidate to realize 5G and beyond, as well as 6G mobile communications. It has been the first decade since its fundamental concept emerged. This Special Issue consists of 19 papers and each of them focuses on a popular topic related to massive MIMO systems, e.g. analog/digital hybrid signal processing, antenna fabrication, and machine learning incorporation. These achievements could boost its realization and deepen the academic and industrial knowledge of this field.

Towards the high rate objective, we address two key issues, namely channel estimation and symbol detection. To enhance channel estimation, we propose a cyclic approach (CA) for designing training sequences and an iterative adaptive approach (IAA) for estimating the channel. We also present a minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) based symbol detector, RELAX-BLAST, which combines vertical Bell Labs Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) algorithm and the cyclic principle of RELAX. Towards the high reliability objective, we design robust MIMO transceivers that allow for very low-complexity receiver processing while achieving superb error performance even in turbulent sea. Our unique study on the correlation between the error performance and environmental data further confirms the robustness of our designs. We also performed theoretical capacity analysis as well as practical system designs of relay-aided (RA- )UAC to augment both the reliability and transmission range.
