Book excerpt: Strangled by fits of madness, Marjaneh fell from royalty to the depths of society. Becoming a slave to the king of Arubara, she lost all hope due to her uncontrolled outrages. No chance for happiness came her way until the one-eyed stranger, Sleuth Tau, arrived. Sleuth and his one-legged brother, Alexander Tau joined the navy to fight off the pirates that killed their father and brother, enslaving their sisters. Among their tactics, they began a massive slave uprising, hoping to defeat the slavers that raided the coasts. Their fame as warriors spread along the pirate coast as they sought to end piracy, but Alexander disagreed with the methods used by his brother in bringing about this end. Do the ends really justify the means, or can the method corrupt the ideal? Argument over this issue eventually destroyed what remained of their family. In exile, Sleuth is recruited by Marjanehs owner to defend his besieged and corrupted city against certain doom. Can Sleuth Tau find redemption in Arubara, or is he lost to the violence of the sea forever?

The brothers are soon at odds and then separated in 1776 during battle. Their lives take very different directions as they are involved with the Burkhard family of Pennsylvania German Lutherans, Philadelphia Irish, New York Loyalists and members from Iroquois Nation. This is a story that will show the complexities and struggles of the time when our nation was very divided and strong Christian faith of individuals made the difference in America’s fight for freedom.

Book excerpt: It is November 2013, nearly thirty years after Rabbi Levin taught and comforted refusenik families in the former Soviet Union and presided over the twinning of his bat mitzvah student, Simone Da Costa, with Sanna Tsivkin of Leningrad. Rabbi Levin is currently serving a synagogue in northern Manhattan which consists of a substantial number of Holocaust survivors. As his congregation observes the seventy-fifth anniversary of Kristallnacht, he is acutely aware of hatred of the other in America. Inequality, discrimination, segregation, violence against racial minorities, anti-Semitic incidents, and anti-immigrant bias were in full force. ICE was bearing down hard upon illegal immigrants. Many have taken refuge in religious institutions to avoid deportation and family separation. The ghosts of 1938 have reappeared on the synagogue's doorstep. Both Kristallnacht and its aftermath and the plight of Soviet Jewry seem as if they had only happened yesterday. Thousands of miles away, Rabbi Levin's daughter, Bracha, engages in graduate work at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and works for a human rights organization. She is on the front lines of the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict As a lover of Zion who is saddened by acts of terrorism perpetrated against her own people, she witnesses prejudice and violations of human rights and becomes disillusioned. A famous saying attributed to the Baal Shem Tov states that forgetfulness leads to exile, but remembrance is the secret of redemption. The upcoming observance of Kristallnacht sets off a chain of events which would lead to communal challenges and would move Rabbi Levin's community work in an unpredictable direction. Bracha's experiences would lead to serious questioning that would shape her career path. As both father and daughter embark upon a journey of remembrance, face the challenges of the present, and envision a brighter future for humanity, they discover the real secret of redemption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1946 and 1966 large numbers of displaced persons (DPs) came to Australia to escape the horrors of war-torn Europe. Peter Brune’s latest work had its genesis in more than 40 interviews he conducted with DPs in the period 2001—2022. He spoke to migrants from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece and Hungary. Inspired by their resilience, their enterprise and their determination to make a new life for themselves in Australia, the author has written about their harrowing war experiences-—drawing largely on their own words—-their reception in Australia and their first responses to an alien culture. Their subsequent reflections on the journeys they undertook and how they fared here are both moving and revelatory. Peter also analyses the Chifley government’s immigration policies, which were driven by Arthur Calwell, and the selection criteria that were applied to assess applicants. Both Chifley and Calwell saw the need for a greater population for economic and security reasons; but they also felt an obligation to alleviate the deprivations suffered by millions of Europeans. Suffering, Redemption and Triumph is an extraordinary exposition of how mass postwar immigration created the modern, multicultural society in which we now live. Peter makes the case that it is one of the most significant periods in the Australian story.

Book excerpt: The continued history of Beaufort County, South Carolina, during and following the Civil War In Rebellion, Reconstruction, and Redemption, 1861-1893, the second of three volumes on the history of Beaufort County, Stephen R. Wise and Lawrence S. Rowland offer details about the district from 1861 to 1893, which influenced the development of the South Carolina and the nation. During a span of thirty years the region was transformed by the crucible of war from a wealthy, slave-based white oligarchy to a county where former slaves dominated a new, radically democratic political economy. This volume begins where volume I concluded, the November 1861 Union capture and occupation of the Sea Islands clustered around Port Royal Sound, and the Confederate retreat and re-entrenchment on Beaufort District's mainland, where they fended off federal attacks for three and a half years and vainly attempted to maintain their pre-war life. In addition to chronicling numerous military actions that revolutionized warfare, Wise and Rowland offer an original, sophisticated study of the famous Port Royal Experiment in which United States military officers, government officials, civilian northerners, African American soldiers, and liberated slaves transformed the Union-occupied corner of the Palmetto State into a laboratory for liberty and a working model of the post-Civil War New South. The revolution wrought by Union victory and the political and social Reconstruction of South Carolina was followed by a counterrevolution called Redemption, the organized campaign of Southern whites, defeated in the war, to regain supremacy over African Americans. While former slave-owning, anti-black "Redeemers" took control of mainland Beaufort County, they were thwarted on the Sea Islands, where African Americans retained power and kept reaction at bay. By 1893, elements of both the New and Old South coexisted uneasily side by side as the old Beaufort District was divided into Beaufort and Hampton counties. The Democratic mainland reverted to an agricultural-based economy while the Republican Sea Islands and the town of Beaufort underwent an economic boom based on the phosphate mining industry and the new commercial port in the lowcountry town of Port Royal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book was born out of a desire to lift your spirit. As we look around us today, we see a lot of pain and sorrow and misery. The concept of ?The Nature of God's Divine Redemption? is a deliberate intention to encourage you and to lift your hope, to put your mind on something better and a superior way. The book tells you, ?If the son of man set you free, you are free indeed? (John 8: 36, King James Bible). That is what is ?The Nature of God's Redemption? is about. We are told that whatsoever a man thinks in his heart so is he. The idea behind the book is to help you to think good thoughts and to lift your minds from horizontal things to vertical things. God's love is the most amazing thing. The book tells that faith is also amazing. ?It takes far more faith to believe in the intellectually chic and fashionable evolutionary myth than it does to believe in the existence of God.' Moreover, it says, ?Evolution is based entirely on faith because no facts or proof have ever been found to support it ? Faith does play a primary role in the life of a Christian. For the person who truly wants to seek God and learn to please Him, Hebrews 11:6 tells us that: ?But without faith it is impossible to please God: for him that cometh to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarded of them that diligently seek Him? Faith is vital to a Christian. In fact, without it, no one can please God. Notice this verse says that those seeking God ?must believe that He is.' Also the book articulates that ?a deep belief in God, who ?rewards? all who ?diligently seek Him, requires proof of His existence.' It says it is ?After proof has been established, then'and only then can one have faith'absolute confidence that what man does is being recorded in God's mind, to be remembered when he receives his reward.' If you are uncertain that God exists because proof of that existence has not been firmly established, then, under fire, your faith will wane or disappear. But when you truly believe in what Jesus Christ did on the Cross of Calvary, God's Divine love will redeem you and set you free from the heavy load of sin.

Book excerpt: A debut swashbuckling fantasy following a powerful sorceress, the Marquese Enid d’Tancreville, as she is forced on the run where she meets a vast cast of characters including a young sea captain who has need of a sea mage. Perfect for fans of Patrick O’Brian, Naomi Novik, and Brian McClellan. Despite her powerful magic, Marquese Enid d’Tancreville must flee her homeland to escape death at the hands of the Theocratic Revolution. When a Theocratic warship overtakes the ship bearing her to safety, Enid is spared capture by the timely intervention of the Albion frigate Alarum, under the commend of Commander Rue Nath. These circumstances make for an odd alliance, and Enid finds herself replacing the Alarum’s recently slain sea mage. Now an officer under Nath’s command, Enid is thrust into a strange maritime world full of confusing customs, duties, and language. Worse, as she soon discovers, the threat of revolution is not confined to shore.
