Drawing on interviews with veterans and extensive research, Dawson chronicles the violence and political intrigue that characterized this period, including the notorious 'Bloody Sunday' massacre. Book excerpt: After 1848 political revolution disappears in England and grows in Ireland. Like countries in southern and eastern Europe, Ireland was not developing its population, technology, wealth, or its middle class as was England. Celtic Ireland was at the edge of extinction. How did the Irish turn this around? There were three kinds of response to this challenge: One acquiescence, supporting the Act of Union with ‘Great Britain’ (1800); Two, compromise, partial administrative repeal of the Act of Union, ‘Home Rule’; Three, fight for an independent Irish republic by revolutionary means, like George Washington in 1776. Our analysis focuses on the third response, the Fenians, but the others are always in the picture. How do the Fenians expect to make a revolution successfully? English monarchs, Tory politicians, and English governments spared no military cost to prevent any George Washington allied with France or Germany at their back-door. To discover the revolutionary answers to our question the author goes to the general history and to a detailed analysis of the Fenian social organization, leadership, value perspectives during four time periods. What is the movement’s desired future, republican (‘green’) or socialist (‘red’)? What are the consequences for Ireland, its classes, castes, and groups?

Book excerpt: Africa has been and currently is the site of numerous conflicts and crises. Authors previously wrote of these as specifically African problems or the problems of Europeans in Africa, but newer scholarship on other aspects of Africa has come to stress the interconnectness of Africa and the wider world. Still, it has often been limited to studies of isolated instances within African countries, with little-to-no connection to greater patterns of international power and violence. This volume explores the historical and present local and international dimensions of the myriad security crises in Africa, from the role of international relations during liberation to multination efforts against piracy.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes particular patterns of nationalist self-configuration and nationalist uses of memory, counter-memory, and historical amnesia in Ireland from roughly around the time of the emergence of a broad-based non-sectarian Irish nationalist platform in the late eighteenth century (the Society of United Irishmen) until Ireland’s partition and the founding of the Irish Free State in 1922. In approaching Irish nationalism through the particular historical lens of “Iran,” this book underscores the fact that Irish nationalism during this period (and even earlier) always utilized a historical paradigm that grounded Anglo-Irish encounters and Irish nationalism in the broader world history, a process that I term “worlding of Ireland.” In effect, Irish nationalism was always politically and culturally cosmopolitan in outlook in some formulations, even in the case of many nationalists who resorted to insular and narrowly defined exclusionary ethnic and/or religious formulations of the Irish “nation.” Irish nationalists, as nationalists in many other parts of the world, recurrently imagined their own history either in contrast to or as reflected in, the histories of peoples and lands elsewhere, even while claiming the historical uniqueness of the Irish experience. Present in a wide range of Irish nationalist political, cultural, and historical utterances were assertions of past and/or present affinities with other peoples and lands.
