Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July of 1863, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia scored a narrow victory over the Union Army of the Potomac in the Battle of Gettysburg. Soon after, President Abraham Lincoln was killed during a Confederate raid on the outskirts of Washington. With the war at an effective stalemate, rising opposition at home, and the growing threat of European intervention, the United States was forced to recognize the CSA as an independent nation. This victory, however, carried the seeds of disaster. Within a decade of their independence, the Confederate States began to tear themselves apart over many of the same divisive issues that had led to their breaking from the Union. By the 1970s, the former CSA is a patchwork of minor countries, often clashing with one another over resources, territory and ideology. Many blacks in these nations, seeking to escape the discrimination and subjugation they have endured since slavery's grudging end in the 1880s, have turned to guerrilla warfare, under the banner of the Brotherhood Liberation Army. The United States has largely avoided becoming involved in this and other Southern conflicts, preferring to prop up or engineer the fall of this regime or that, seeking to maintain its influence and dominance over these former states without provoking another war against the entire South. Nation reporter Terry Garrison-descendant of discredited abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison-knows this history all too well, and what it has done to him and his family. Sent to cover a momentous peace accord between the Republic of Mississippi and the BLA, he views the assignment as pointless: one more doomed attempt to bring peace to the fractious South. Then he stumbles across a soldier with an earth-shaking secret-one that could not only destroy the fragile peace in Mississippi and the Delta region, but potentially set off a new conflagration across the entire continent. But there is more to this secret than even Terry can guess. And there are those-South and North-who will stop at nothing to keep it buried... Mark Ciccone is a writer from the American Midwest, specifically Wisconsin. He writes alternate history, soft science fiction, and historical fiction. This is his first novel-length work.

Book excerpt: The region was sparsely populated by farmers and indigenous people. Its wildlife was little known. And it was in Mexico, invisible to North Americans. Thus, after the Water Treaty of 1944 was signed by the United States and Mexico, the flow of the Colorado River diminished to a trickle in the Mexican delta, transforming a fertile land of green lagoons into a dry wasteland. And nobody seemed to care. The Mexican delta of the Colorado River is becoming one of the most remarkable environmental stories on the continent. Red Delta combines the powerful story of the delta's restored natural diversity with clear information on the "river of law" that governs water allotments to it (U.S. -- 90%, Mexico -- 10%), presenting a story of hope and recovery. Whether in search of a rare and endangered bird, sifting through the sands of the delta's badlands for fossils, or visiting a village of the deltas impoverished Cucapa people, Bergman helps us see the variety and abundance of life in this once-forgotten place.

Unsatisfied with classic step-by-step calisthenics routines, Matt has created an infinitely customizable approach that delivers fast, proven results for anyone from the rank beginner to the elite athlete. No matter where you are in your fitness journey, your best workouts are still yet to come not just by working harder, but through working smarter than ever before.

Book excerpt: The spatial variability of dissolved arsenic (As) concentrations in aquifers was studied near Ha Noi, Vietnam. The goal was to identify major geochemical, sedimentological and hydrochemical differences between high and low As regions. Also, the behaviour of As and other elements during sequential extractions was characterized with micro synchrotron XRF analysis. Based on the results a conceptual model was developed which could explain the current situation on site and in other affected areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most societies Vietnam has seen marked changes in family structures and dynamics this century. For Vietnam however these changes have been especially radical. After decades of French acculturation the 1940s brought sweeping economic changes and a move away from collectivism. Perhaps because of Vietnam’s long isolation from the late 1970s into the early 1990s, very little has been written on the Vietnamese family. This text provides an examination of the Vietnamese family focusing on two fundamental relationships – husband-wife and parent-children – within their wider social and historical context. The author explores how and why marital partners are chosen; individual’s domains within the family; reproduction and birth control; son preference; ancestor worship; and the role of the state. As such, the study will be of interest not just to sociologists but also to those scholars looking to understand the current social transformation of Vietnam.

Book excerpt: Based on open source principles of transparency, participation, and collaboration, "open management" challenges conventional business ideas about what companies are, how they run, and how they make money. This book provides the blueprint for putting it into practice in your own firm. He covers challenges that have been missing from the conversation to date, among them: how to scale engagement; how to have healthy debates that net progress; and how to attract and keep the "Social Generation" of workers. Through a mix of vibrant stories, candid lessons, and tested processes, Whitehurst shows how Red Hat has blown the traditional operating model to pieces by emerging out of a pure bottom up culture and learning how to execute it at scale. And he explains what other companies are, and need to be doing to bring this open style into all facets of the organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subduing nature and harnessing water resources rose to become the key paradigm of modernization in the Vietnam's Mekong Delta. Over the past 40 years, waterscape engineering turned Vietnam's largest river estuary into one of the most agriculturally productive areas in the world. This book traces water resources development from the time of the socialist-oriented hydraulic mission and Green Revolution, which began in the late 1970s under the economic rationale of central planning, to more recent trends responding to renovation policy, global environmental change, and Vietnam's capitalist transformation. Analytically, the focus is with the nexus of water regulation, bureaucratic power, and socio-ecological change, as well as the vested interests and corresponding strategic actions that coalesce around the technocratic hydro-management. Going beyond the scope of the Mekong Delta, the book offers new perspectives and critical reflections on water governance dynamics and institutional reforms in Vietnam, from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Book excerpt: This novel of a Mississippi family in the 1920s “presents the essence of the Deep South and does it with infinite finesse” (The Christian Science Monitor). From one of the most treasured American writers, winner of a National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize, comes Delta Wedding, a vivid and charming portrait of Southern life. Set in 1923, the story is centered on the Fairchilds, a big and clamorous family, who live on a plantation in the Mississippi delta. They are in the midst of planning their daughter’s wedding when a nine-year-old relative, Laura McRaven, whose mother has just died, comes to visit. Drama leads to drama, revelation to revelation, in a novel that is “nothing short of wonderful” (The New Yorker). The result is a sometimes-riotous view of a Southern family, and the parentless child who learns to become one of them.
