The Center for Teaching Quality, with the support of SERVE, has surveyed approximately 4,200 educators in Mobile, Talladega and Hoover to inform the work of the Governor's Commission on Quality Teaching. By asking those whose opinions matter most on these critical issues--classroom teachers--policymakers can better gauge what incentives and school conditions are most essential in recruiting and retaining teachers for all Alabama classrooms. Survey respondents were positive about the teaching and learning conditions in their schools, reporting that leadership supports them, professional development provides the knowledge and skills they need to teach effectively, and that facilities and resources are adequate. This is important as educators noted that these conditions drive their future employment decisions. Educators who indicated that they are most likely to move schools or quit teaching have much more negative perceptions of teaching and learning conditions than those who want to remain in their school. Additionally, issues such as leadership, empowerment, and time (along with salary) were among the most important influences on teachers' decisions about whether to stay in their school.
