Book excerpt: This plan has been prepared to define recovery actions necessary to protect and recover the Nova Scotia population of Blanding's turtle. The introduction presents background on the conservation status of the species and the biology of Blanding's turtle in Nova Scotia. Section 2 discusses factors affecting the vulnerability of the species, the role of the turtle in the Nova Scotia Atlantic interior ecosystem, and the recovery potential of the species. Section 3 outlines the recovery plan, including goals & objectives, strategies, and a sequence of actions. Additional information is provided for each step of the plan: determination of habitat requirements and availability, implementation of habitat protection, clarifying understanding of the turtle's life history, stabilizing population age structure through increased recruitment, investigating population genetics, and providing data storage and access. The final section contains a plan implementation schedule.

Book excerpt: Mass mortality events (MMEs) are rapidly occurring and localized events, and have been reported to remove up to 90% of individuals in a population. MMEs can be especially damaging to population persistence for long-lived species, such as chelonians. While MMEs have been regarded as rare events, they are predicted to occur with increased frequency as environmental stochasticity associated with climate change increases. Unfortunately, a limited understanding of the causes and consequences of MMEs remains. In the current thesis, I investigated the potential causes of an acute MME of at-risk Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) at Misery Bay Provincial Park on Manitoulin Island, Ontario in which approximately 50% of the population succumbed to mortality, and used population viability analyses (PVAs) to examine strategies to recover the population. Because the park includes relatively pristine habitat in which most of the regular anthropogenic threats to turtles are absent, the hypotheses I tested to explain the mortality considered natural threats, including disease, failed overwintering, and predation in the winter and active seasons. I determined that the most likely cause of death was a large-scale predation event, which received support from several lines of evidence, including the presence of predators within the park, a failed predation attempt on a live Blanding's turtle, and the meticulous destruction of a turtle decoy stationed where carcasses were found. The recovery strategies examined included nest protection, introduction of juveniles, introduction of adults, and a nest protection plus introduction of juvenile combination strategy. PVAs determined that the most effective recovery strategy for this population would be a combination of nest protection and the annual introduction of 25 two-year-old females for a period of 50 years. The information gained through my study has led to the recommendation of appropriate conservation strategies for this population, and will aid in the management of future MMEs elsewhere.

Book excerpt: The Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) has received threatened status in the State of Ohio in 2010. The goal of this study is to provide information that can be used in conservation management to locate suitable habitat for conservation of the species as well as potential repatriation or trans location sites. Wetland Inventory and Land Use/Land Cover maps were combined with aerial photography to evaluate regions located in Ohio's Lake Erie Drainage Basin that would meet the essential requirements of the turtles life history by quantitative methods used in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing programs. This study identified suitable wetlands and vernal pools, lakes and ponds, and other areas with minimum canopy for nesting and movement. Throughout the region, the highest concentration of available habitat is found in Erie, Lucas, and Ottawa counties of the Blanding's turtle's historical range. This approach to creating Habitat Niche Models was validated by close correlation between the counties identified as having remaining appropriate habitat and the counties from the historical populations in which Blanding's turtles still remain. The potential exists to restore these areas through various means: restoring wetlands, protecting areas near agriculture that are more suitable for nesting, constructing small tunnels under roads and fences, and installing road warning signs to allow for safer migration. With protection and restoration of the habitat, the species may still have a chance to recover and become a stable population without the need for intense management.

Book excerpt: Reports a study conducted to: document the movement patterns of young Blandings turtles (Emydoidea blandingii); and identify areas used by young turtles as rearing grounds and hibernation sites. The study area was located in a park in south-western Nova Scotia. The turtles were hand-reared to an age when they could be fitted with radio transmitters and were then released at four sites, three located on small brooks and the fourth at a small pond. All release sites had boggy floodplain areas dominated by shrubs, grasses, and sphagnum moss. Tagged turtles were tracked daily for the first few days after release to determine whether they would move significantly after release. When determined they would not move significantly, they were positioned by telemetry every 3-7 days and recaptured every 3-14 days. Recaptured turtles were measured and examined to determine their condition. Results are presented and discussed related to turtle survival, movement, predation, behaviour, and habitat use.

Book excerpt: With an estimated population of 350 adults, the population of Blanding's turtles in Nova Scotia is listed as Endangered both federally and provincially. Headstarting is used in Nova Scotia as part of the recovery program and is designed to improve the survivorship of turtles at an early life history stage. In 2009 and 2010, the largest Blanding's turtle headstarting effort to date in Nova Scotia was undertaken with eggs collected from Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site (KNP). These eggs were incubated and hatched at Oaklawn Zoo, Aylesford, Nova Scotia, and the hatchlings were subsequently raised in captivity for two years. A total of 154 headstarted turtles were re-introduced into KNP during the summers of 2011 and 2012. A total of 29 headstarted turtles released at Atkins Brook were tracked using radio telemetry to study growth and movement. For comparative purposes, 7 wild incubated turtles were also collected and tagged for radio tracking. Turtles were tracked weekly from April to November 2012 to collect movement data and were measured the first week of every month. For the purpose of analysis, turtles were divided into 4 groups: 2009-headstarts, 2010-headstarts, wild (3yrs), and wild (5-7). A pairwise comparison found a difference in movement rates between groups. Wild (5-7) turtles were found to have higher movement rates than all other groups (P

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining practices can negatively impact turtles through degradation of wetlands and surrounding upland habitat, alteration of movement corridors, accidental mortality, and increased risk of nest and turtle predation. These impacts, in turn, can cause changes in patterns of energy allocation, skewed sex ratios and changed demography, which may ultimately lead to population declines. The aim of my study was to describe the demography of, and identify critical habitat for, a population of globally-endangered Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) inhabiting an area of interest for development of a trap rock quarry. In addition to generating important knowledge about population ecology and habitat use, my study can serve as the "before" study in a BeforeAfter Control-Impact (BACI) study quantifying impacts of quarrying on turtles. Using radiotelemetry, GPS dataloggers, and capture-mark-recapture surveys, data were collected at an impact (quarry) site and a control site, and thermal data were collected during overwintering using iButtons. I captured 56 turtles at the impact site and 13 at the control site, and estimated population sizes were 79.6 +/- 17.9 (1.84 turtles/ha) and 16.0 +/- 21.2 (0.32 turtles/ha), respectively. Body size was larger at the control site, but body condition was similar at both sites. Daily distances moved and home range sizes did not differ between sites, and were generally smaller than conspecific values reported in the literature. I identified nesting (15 impact, 2 control) and overwintering (12 impact, 7 control) sites, both considered critical habitats. Overwintering water depth ranged from 30-150 cm (before ice-on) and turtles overwintered at temperatures reported previously in the literature (1.5 to 0.5 oC). My data can be used to quantitatively inform quarry development and mitigation strategies, essential components to balancing the needs of species at risk and humans.
