Book excerpt: Domingo Faustino Sarmiento (1811-1888) was Argentina's leading writer, educator, and politician of the nineteenth century, and served as President from 1868 to 1874. Of his several autobiographies, the best-known Recollections of a Provincial Past is one of the indisputable classics of Spanish American literature, as well as one of the earliest autobiographies written in the Americas in Spanish. Written in exile in 1850, the memoirs describe his childhood and adolescence in an Andean province whose customs were still those of a colony. Sarmiento presents his life as the triumph of civilization over barbarism; looking back on his youth, he measures his wealth and strength by the accumulation of enriching personal and political experiences. He compares himself to the newly independent Argentina, claiming to be a historically representative individual whose trajectory seves to illuminate contemporary South America.

Book Synopsis Imperial Educación by : Thomas Genova
Download or read book Imperial Educación written by Thomas Genova and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-07-08 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the long nineteenth century, Argentine and Cuban reformers invited white women from the United States to train teachers as replacements for their countries’ supposedly unfit mothers. Imperial Educación examines representations of mixed-race Afro-descended mothers in literary and educational texts from the Americas during an era in which governing elites were invested in reproducing European cultural values in their countries’ citizens. Thomas Genova analyzes the racialized figure of the republican mother in nineteenth-century literary texts in North and South America and the Caribbean, highlighting the ways in which these works question the capacity of Afro-descended women to raise good republican citizens for the newly formed New World nation-states. Considering the work of canonical and noncanonical authors alike, Genova asks how the allegory of the national family—omnipresent in the nationalist discourses of the Americas—reconciles itself to the race hierarchies upon which New World slave and postslavery societies are built. This innovative study is the first book to consider the hemispheric relations between race, republican motherhood, and public education by triangulating the nation-building processes of Cuba and Argentina through U.S. empire. Download or read book Britain and the Making of Argentina written by Gordon A. Bridger and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author reminds us all of the huge part that British capital, British people and British technology played in transforming Argentina into a modern 20th century economy. He also analyses the reasons for Argentina's loss of momentum in the post-war world.Much of the history has been forgotten and/or misjudged. That does not make it any less important. In fact, it deserves to be recognised as there are lessons that could be learned from the “golden decade” of development. Those who have an interest in history and development, especially in Argentina, including academics, journalists, historians, and economists will all find this economic and social history of interest.

Book Synopsis Domingo F. Sarmiento’s Argirópolis by : Gustavo Fares
Download or read book Domingo F. Sarmiento’s Argirópolis written by Gustavo Fares and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first English translation of Argirópolis (1850) by the Argentine Domingo F. Sarmiento, one of the most important political and cultural figures of nineteenth-century Latin America. Argirópolis proposes the union of Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay into the United States of South America or the United States of the Río de la Plata, with a capital on Martín García island. It anticipates some aspects of the continent’s future, such as the formation of Mercosur (the Southern Common Market) in 1991. Argirópolis explores politics, modernity, and nation formation, making Sarmiento’s treatise one of Argentina and Latin America’s most relevant programmatic texts. Presented alongside a critical introduction that situates the essay in its historical and political contexts, this translation allows English-speaking readers to explore nineteenth-century Latin American perspectives on concepts such as the nation-state, sovereignty, progress, space, and modernity.
